Strick | Top end swap on my 92 LT1 to the LT4 (fresh start) | ||

I'm going to start fresh and see what I'm possibily missing on this project. My goal: to replace the top end of my 92 LT1 (6 spd vert) with a LT4 set of heads and a LT4 intake along with GM's Hotcam Kit that comes with the cam, roller rockers (1.6) springs, etc. I'm also upgrading the opti to a 95 opti using a 95 timing cover. Here is what I have so far:
LT4 heads LT4 intake 95 timing cover 95 fuel rail w/ fuel regulator long tube headers fuel rail covers off a 95 (to fit new fuel rail) I still need: Harness for new opti (to adapt my 92 to the 95 opti) Got it Hotcam kit from GM (comes with rockers, springs, keepers etc) 95 opti I have questions about fuel injectors, which ones will I need? Looks like Bosch 3s Also, who can upgrade my ECM (prom) to handle this project? Finally what else will I need to complete this project? I know several of you have done this before me and I'm looking to have everything on hand before I start turning wrenches this fall. Thanks for any comments or ideas. I'd hate to have to re-invent the wheel on this. This is no longer just a pipe dream. |

Still Missing:
Headgaskets - I recommend the Victor Reinz PN 5898, Mr Gasket PN 5716G, or GM Performance PN 12553160 Intake Gaskets - GM Performance PN 12528884, Fel Pro PN 1284 or Mr Gasket PN 135G Timing cover gasket, crankshaft/balancer seal, WP gaskets, WP drive seal and Opti seal - Fel Pro makes a "kit" that is cheaper than buying all that stuff seperately. Fel-Pro QTCS45956 ECM - Honestly PCM4Less has litterally tuned hundreds of hotcam LT4's and can hit it darn near perfectly mail order. I'm sure others can do it, but I've actually seen one of those hotcam combo's they tuned and it was spot on. Injectors - Your stock injectors are fine provided they are in good shape. What are you going to do on the timing chain?? They are different between the 92 and 95. If you want to keep the factory cam driven WP the GM Extreme Duty timing set is about your only option. GM Performance PN 12370835 You can upgrade to any number of double roller timing sets to fit 86-99 GEN I SBC's w/factory roller camshaft - but you'll have to utilize an elect WP. The Cloyes PN 9-3545X9 is the best of the best in this chain class and what I have in my 92. There are many other options out there from Cloyes, Roll Master and SA Gear thou. Any of these will seem cheap compared to the LTX chain set..... Will |

Any plans to freshen the bottom end?
I'm not being a Debbie Downer... just relaying some good honest first hand experience. I once scoffed at people that told me this very thing and thought that I would beat the odds; but I didn't Only reason I ask you about your bottom end plans, is that in 2007 I did a top end rebuild on my motor. At that time it had about 150k miles on it. It was well taken care of up to that point with regular oil changes and service. It was not burning oil or other issues; matter of fact when the heads came off the cylinder bores looked great, as did the cam and lifters. The engine also was clean as a whistle on the inside with just a bit of carbon build up on the valves. I had a bad water pump, some oil leaks and an Opti-Spark with 150k miles on it. I only had enough money to do a H&C swap and a small one car garage that really gave me no room to extract the motor. So, I decided to just do H&C. I probably spent nearly enough doing the top end only to do the whole damn thing if I had planned better too. Once completed it held together fine and gave me more power and grins for about 18 months or so. I was a happy camper. However, at my first trip to the drag strip ever with this car, I toasted every bearing on the crank assembly on my second run of the day. This was just over a year ago. When the engine was disassembled my builder said that it appeared that this damage was taking place over time and that the run at the track was just the straw that broke the camels back. Matter of fact I didn't even throw a rod, just spun a few bearings and heated things up real good!! Good enough to initially freeze up the bottom end. After it cooled, it would crank and try to run but you could hear the bearings just grinding away. I wish I had a video tape of that sound... it would convince a lot of folks to check that bottom end real good before just doing the top. With all this said, I know that there are good reasons to just do top end rebuilds and your plans sound good and solid. I just wanted to relay my experiences as they are not told third person or about a friend of a friend. It happened to me. |

Thanks guys, I appreciate the words of wisdom. Yes, I realize the risk of not beefing the lower end. My engine has 70K on it and if it does spin a bearing that will give me reason to build a nice little 383. I'm not a drag strip racer and only like the road course or auto cross fun days. However, that became much too expensive. So, I'm just running with my club on the open roads of North and South Carolina. Love those mountain roads in western NC. Besides, if I do spin a bearing, I'll be well practiced in tearing down my LT1/4. I have an electric water pump already so I'll be able to make more choices in timing chain set ups. I don't want to go through removing the tranny as that is another time consumming effort.
Changing compression ratio with head gaskets....hummmm...I have to look in on that. The bottom line is that I'd like a little more fun in the fun pedal so I can keep up with the C5 and C6s, but still have a semi tame car in traffic. |

Let's talk about timing chains. Remember I have an electric water pump and removed the gearing mechanism and plugged the hole. I'll have a GM Hotcam kit and a 95 timing cover with a 95 opti-spark. What is the current best set up? Thanks again.

As long as your stock damper is in good shape, it's fine to re-use.
Check the rubber elastomer ring for cracks or chunks missing. If your stock one is trash you can buy a new damper/pulley from Pioneer or Dorman. Dorman PN 594-107 (reuses the stock hub) Pioneer has 2 different ones. Non SFI PN 872013 (requires hub PN 872015) SFI approved PN 872043 (requires hub PN 872015) Will |

Here's another question, the LT4 piston has a different style of ring. Are there any other differences in the piston between LT4 and LT1? Will those rings fit on the LT1 pistons? |

I don't know about any difference in the stock rings. Honestly I never looked that close thou. When I tear them down (to build them) - Once I press the pistons off the rods I just toss them in the trash. The pistons are different. The valve relifs on the LT4 are smaller for more compression. Will |

this right here... I think i had my bottom end freshened up and rebuilt for like 600$ at a local speed shop. they put the bearings in but I brought them to them. let them rehone the cylinder walls and mains and new piston rings etc, they also checked all my clearances to make sure nothing was out of spec.... I highly recommend this while you have it apart. at 150k miles these things go. |

My next problem is the rocker arm studs. The LT4 heads have a 7/16-40 thread hole for the studs. If I buy a GM Hot Cam Kit, complete with roller rockers, springs, etc, What will the top of the stud be, 3/8" or 7/16" thread?

I got another part today. The harness connection 92 to 95 opti. I've learned that the GM Hot Cam Kit is designed for the LT1 engine. So the rocker arms will be adjustable and the studs will be 7/16 base and 3/8 top and they are self aligning rocker arms. So, all is good so far.

I found a good price on the GM Hot cam kit from Jegs Performance online and ordered it. Now I need the timing chain and opti along with the gaskets. I'm almost there. A great guy on the CF sent me his LT4 left overs (rockers, springs, studs and adjuster nuts, push rods, and fuel injectors) for just the shipping cost. Of course I sent a little extra to cover a beer or two. So, I'll have to decide on which rocker arms to use as the ones I got from my buddy look almost new. The LT4 set up is not adjustable and the hot cam kit rockers are adjustable. This is going to take some more thought.

I'm down to the timing chain, rocker studs, opti, and gaskets. Timing chain is narrowed down to the GM Extreme duty set GM pn 12370835. The rocker studs will be the ARP pn 070-134-7104 set which has a touch longer length, but only by .145". The opti will be a GM part for the 95 LT1 for around $362. I have the intake gasket figured out as there is a difference in the area they cover. I'll be port matching the intake to the heads and pn 12367777 intake gaskets won't block any of the porting areas. Next, I'll be sending my LT4 injectors out to be cleaned and checked. And lastly, will be the chip to PCM4Less. I'll list all of the parts I use and let you know how the project is progressing. Estimated start date.......November.

I received the ARP studs and the timing chain. I tried out the studs and found that they bottom out before the shoulder on the stud touches the head. So I immediately sent them back and ordered the ARP 134-7101 studs which are a touch shorter and should not bottom out like the 7104's did.
I looked at some thread inserts at work and noticed that the very bottom of the insert (where the part goes straight across the diameter of the hole, I guess it's used to install the insert) and it has a small notch which is used to break off the piece that goes across the bottom of the insert. In my LT4 heads, the inserts have that same piece going across the bottom of the insert. Along with that, I noticed that the LT4 OEM studs are shorter than the ARP studs (at least at the threaded part that goes into the head). Do you think GM just left that piece in there and shortened the stud to hasten the assembly process? |

Absolutely. I found out that the bottom of the insert is removable. You just use a small pair of needle nose pliers and break it off. GM left them on as the OEM studs are shorter than ARP studs and don't bottom out. It saves time on the assembly line. |

Are you going to use pushrod guides? This could help with the thread length. |

only use pushrod guide for non-self-aligning rockers.

I'm guessing that the ARP stud base is longer because many use these with guide plates. |

Good thought, but I don't need guide plates. I'll just break off the pieces and move on. I expect the new studs this Monday. I'll let you know how they work out. |

I finally removed all the tangs at the bottom of the stud holes. The new ARP rocker arm studs fit just right. Now to get the opti-spark and the gaskets. I'll be taking the heads in for port matching to the intake next.

Got my heads back. Ken, of Pro Outboard, has a great shop for doing valve work and re-surfacing. The heads have new LT4 springs and oil seals. The surface is dead on flat and looks very shiney. The chambers measure out at 54cc's. Everything is set for the Hot cam. Now it's getting close to start wrenching. I have one more cruise and then I'll begin the set up for surgery.

Yes I do. I'll be posting them as I start the project. You guys on here are very observant and posting pictures sometimes sparks additional ideas or comments that I over looked. I'm putting together a complete checklist of removing the engine according to the FSM and other inputs. It will be interesting to see the additional items that my list has missed. I'm still having problems with the "Happy Hooker" and those small bolts in the intake. They just seem to be too small, but others swear by it. |
