Took everyones advice on floor jacks. Went to Northern Tool and they never heard of a Alcan XL35. They had a pretty good selection so I got the Torid red 3000 lbs jack. This thing acts like is struggling to lift the car. I have to put lots of weight on the handle to pump it up. Its all aluminum, its lite but is it heavy duty enough ? The wheels are now scuffed up and I'm considering taking it back. I'm hoping not to get any crap about it. The vette is 3800 lbs roughly, any advice.

If it's that same jack as the one in that thread over on CF that pianoguy linked to, it's a 3.5 TON jack. That's 7000 lbs. The Vette is about 3200 - 3400 lbs depending on year and options.

I don't know but I would think that jack would still do the job rated at 3000 lbs.

After all your not lifting the whole car with it, only 1 corner. 1 corner of the car won't be over 3000 lbs.

Even the catalogue they handed me while I stood in line didn't list it. They were just a bunch of kids. Even the little junkie walmart jacks were easier to pump up. I want to lift one side at a time to put in jack stands. Then move to the other side. They have cheaper low profile thats rated 2 1/2 tons mostly steel and heavier, but it will take less effort to lift it.

sounds like there is something out of wack with the hydraulic ram.

I have an AC-Hydraulic jack... nice, but hella expensive.

Bring it back and get what you want. Tell them it doesn't work right. Don't keep something that's just going to piss you off.

I think they're a pretty good outfit, they should take it back if you're not happy with it.

Tomorrow it's going back. I stood there thinking " I shouldn't have to grunt to lift this car". Was less effort with the 12" handle on the little cheapy jack. I hate returning items even if their defective.

This is the one i have, its 2,000kgs, fully lowered at 94mm and 510mm fully raised. Lifts the car from the front centre cross member as seen in the pic with ease.

Nice jack, Case. My air foil wouldn't let this jack roll far enough under to catch the cross member. May have to drive up on a 2 X 10.

not to get too far off topic, but i have noticed some people using the front crossmember to jack the front for jackstands....but where do put the jack to lift the entire rear after you have lifted the front?
i have seen the link for jackstand placement, but was curious as to where to put it just to lift the entire rear.........

You can get a tool that goes in the jack so you can lift it by the diff between the exhaust pipes, but id be reluctant to use that as a lift point.

That's the Jack-A-Vette, I have one and it works well.
For the front I use a regular ol floorjack after I drive up on 2 x 10's and then place the jackstands where the swaybar is attached to the frame.

For the rear, I use the Jack-A-Vette and place the jackstads either at the point marked "jacking point" or on teh rear part of teh frame where the bumper attaches.

Well today I took back the 1 1/2 ton Torin jack. Nat'l Tool had to open it, inspect it, I pled my case. I got the refund and bought the 2 1/2 ton Torin. What a difference. This doesn't take much effort at all. Its not as fancy, but I happy with it. The extra money difference went into jack stands. Thanks for the input guys. I'll have to get some 2x10's to drive onto to lift from front now.

It's always easier to return something when you want to get something else because it didn't work or you weren't happy with the product. I've kept way to much stuff I should have returned because I lazily waited to long to return it. Good job

Its a "quick lift" jack. Probably has quick release also.

As mentioned, it's a man's jack. This means it lifts the car in less pumps, but requires a little more grunt per pump. It's due to the piston sizing and done on purpose.

If you want a girly jack that you can use without breaking a nail, you bought the wrong one.

I like that one, looks lower profile than my cheapy harbor freight jack. Does it reach the front cross member? Actually what I need is a high lift jack if I'm gonna be pulling the tranny once per year.

I grunt all day lifting packages (UPS) I don't want to grunt lifting my car It doesn't go under the air foil. So I don't know far it will reach. Will put it on 2X10's and see. Will post a picture.

Been doing it for 10 years with no problems.

This one.

I grunt all day lifting my package, too

I crushed my rear crossmember trying to lift the whole back of the car once...lesson learned. Now I do it one side at a time. Plus I have two 3-ton jacks so I can just lift everything and stick the jackstands under all 4 corners. Only takes about 4 minutes.

If anyone doesn't have a jack and needs one, Costco carries a nice low-profile aluminum 3 ton jack. It's only $99 and I've been using one for a few years now with no complaints.

If that rear crossmember you're talking about is above the spare, then it isn't part of the frame as far as I know.

It's paper thin, wouldn't stand a chance as a jacking point. I lifted mine by the rear diff for the first time, I figure not a big deal as the diff carries the entire sprung weight of the car anyways as it sits, and more when you hit a bump.

I confess I jacked it back there once, I threw a 4x4 between it an the jack, or maybe I even still had the spare installed and threw it halfway on the lip of the spare, which spread the load out enough to work.

I will try to measure it tomorrow. Wouldn't be hard to fabricate. Kinda looks like a slice out of a railroad rail.

Edit: Saw you made one. Pappy, even redneck I am losing you!

I just measured mine. The I-beam is wider on the bottom than the top.

Length - 3.5"
Width, top - 1.5"
Width, bottom - 4"
Height - 3.5"

There is also a rubber pad on top, about 3/16" thick. And the bottom has a provision to screw in a peg (centered on the bottom) that fits in the hole in your jack.
