Cost of my 1993 in 1999 - $14,500

Approximate amount of money spent on car (permanant upgrades and repairs only) - $30,000+

Approximate value of car today - $14,500

Somewhere I lost $30k.

I "invested" $3500 in my '86L coupe. Replaced the seats for
$185. I put about 1,000,000 man hours in prep and disassembly,
$100 for a paint gun, $100 in paint, and $500 misc. repairs.
All added up that makes my corvette worth about $3525. Right?
I love it anyway, but its the worst "investment" i have ever
made. Its therapy, no matter the cost. benny

My Vetts are an investement in fun.

But I'm sure this guy's gonna do good. From this weeks "Deals & Wheels" newspaper:

1996 Collectors Edition, LT4 Hi Performance, 6 speed, 2 tops. Showroom Condition, 26k miles, very limited production.
And it's only $28,000

That is the correct answer. The people who take this hobby to seriously are what ruin it, and why I typically will never go to a car show.

Yea, I can't handle shows anymore either.

I can remember when Vette clubs only had members that bought their cars just to own one. Nobody thought about resale at all. But that was when the newest Vette in the club was a C3. Those were fantastic years.

This forum has some of the flavor of thos good old years.

In general cars are a terrible investment.
Own one because you like the car, if you sweat the money then its not the hobby for you, itll drive you nuts.

Not everything has to make "financial sense", some things you do in life for the sheer joy of it .Others do it to relax so they dont go ballistic and eat their families.

IMO the "investment" angle ended when GM came out with cars each year that did everythign better than the last...At some point youre better off buying new rather than paying huge bux for an old car that most of the time isnt worth sinking the $ into. Back in the 80s and 90s the older ones still had value..People understood them and it was easy to go fast.

Today for 40k or so you can buy new, get 30+mpg, 12 sec 1/4 mile time with a warranty and can make payments on it.. Hard to beat that

I'd still rather buy something old that runs 14s, belches on downshifts, creaks like the titanic, and looks like a million bucks.

CC,

You been peeking in my garage again? Even at 14 yrs and 114K miles I can still take a lot of the rice burners on,leaving them too feel the heat and taste the dust. And mine is still original except for tires and filters! And I have a removable hard top too boot!

Those investment Vettes are oftened transported in large trailers pulled by large semi-tractors with lots of chrome! It seems the ones I love are more likely to have numbers on them somewhere and look like they could use a bath!! and in the old days they had brackets bolted to the frame to hook tow bar to.

CC, you mean old cars?

Paid $2200 for the 67, had every option in the book. Looking back I would have been better off buying one with a mint body and adding the other stuff aftermarket.

Spent more on it than Id care to admit but it will have some value and bring tons of fun.
No plastic inside. All metal, plenty of stainless trim.
Changed the rear wiring harness out in 15 minutes last night, love it.

Hello All,

The C4's will eventually go up in value. Every era of Corvette has its turn, and we are just not there yet.
C1, C2 and the C3's are on thier way up. I own two C4's. A Red 87 coupe all original, and I just restored a Black 86 coupe that was neglected and abused by its previous owners.
I love driving them, they are alot of fun to me. The best thing about it is that I own both of them with no car payments. Use them and enjoy them. Take care.

Ha! I transport mine around in the beat-up old haulmark with a leaky roof and busted hinges that also serves as a camper two weeks a month...

I just went up-scale and bought a jumpstart box with an AC outlet, now I can run a fan for 2.6 hours (as listed on the box) in case it's hot next month

I can't wash my car. I prefer the "road warrior" look. Too bad all that dirt adds weight.
