I know the answer to the question depends on the individual but just thought I would solicit your thoughts.... as you know my vette has 230K+ on the clock and is my daily driver.... runs well until... yesterday...lol I was cruising the interstate about 75mph without warning the service ASR light came on, car died, I coasted to the shoulder of the road, had it flatbedded to the shop.... still waiting on the diagnosis.....

One or two major repairs per year is tolerable for me, but if the problems are continuous, I am thinking its time to get a newer one....

When would you say enough?

Well, wait for the diagnosis first, of course, but that said...

What about the engine swap you were considering?

If you don't do that, you would probably make better money parting it out if you have the means to do so.

Well, you can take care of it and just about drive it forever, and it will almost always be cheaper (in the long run and the short run) to keep it running than to get a newer one. Eventually you accept the fact that the car is worth next to nothing, and is always worth more to keep than to sell.

My '85 has been my daily, and is still capable. Obviously, if it was my only car, and my only means of getting to work, that would be a problem. So that's why I have two old cars.

When you get right down to it, that's really just a call that only you can make. You know your situation, your priorities and what's practical for you. And I'm sure in the final evaluation, you'll know what to do, regardless of any opinions offered here.

You can't really sell it like it is unless you want to part it out. I would find an engine and performance set up that would really, really make me happy with a few surprises for them newer ones. Come on, tell me you don't love it. Either way it's going to cost you money. Do what makes you happy. What is your favorite model year? Cars are going at good prices right now. Maybe even pick up a newer one with a warranty. By the way, How have the tropical storms been treating you in Alabama?

I am betting fuel pump.

ASR light was nothing but a false warning to the fact the engine shut down.

Consider the cost of a car payment and do the math. The other option is this:

Consider the cost of a newer Corvette - $20k.

What can you do with your current Vette for $20k?

And do it without a loan or a rise in insurance?

Think about it.

Right now I plan to keep it (only if its totalled will I get rid of it probably).... in fact I'll do the engine swap next year as it got side tracked (can you say daughter who will be 16 next month and needs a car cause she is not driving mine......)

I agree the call is mine, and I do love the model year I have, just need to work on my to do list... let's see, headlight motor, window guide, rear hatch release, re-attach interior door panels and radio..... nothing like driving it though, I smile daily.... there is a lot that I can do for 20k with no change....

Where I am in Bama we have been spared for the most part, we got some rain, but thats about it....

I am thinking fuel pump too as I have not replaced that yet....

That's easy stuff. You just have to stay up on it or it slowly evolves into a piece of crap.

I just ordered new hatch struts. $80, but to rid myself of one more daily source of aggravation on the car, is well worth it.

I've run it out of fuel and lost a fuel pump, either case can cause some wierd codes to pop up that have nothing to do with the problem.

Window guide? Piece of cake. I just did one on my car. The part was $16 from the local GM dealer. I'll be in Anniston in two weeks. Want to have a vette day?

Keep it. You'll be sorry if you let it go. If you need a reliable DD, buy an older Honda. They are fairly cheap, and run FOREVER!

Theres something to be said for knowing everything about your car. Even if it needs work theres still some sort of confidence there after having it that long. Better to spend some occasionally than make payments. Heck, once a new car is 3 yrs old they start falling apart anyay at least the newest ones.

I picked up a 2005 Toyota Matrix for $10k. I probably paid too much, but it gets great mileage. I actually hate the car, the way it drives, and the mushy clutch, but it is cheap transportation and the Vette gets to take it easy. Even though its a 2005 model it looks like hell from three years of Commuter Hell around Washington DC.!!! It has 85K miles on it already. And I thought my Vette had a lot of miles. At this rate the Matrix will catch up to the Vette in just a couple years.

So.. if you can afford a beater, I would keep the Vette and drive something else. Cars are pretty cheap right now.

thanks everyone for the feedback.... living in the south is an advantage because the weather is good most of the time, so I can drive the car year round... car is still at the mechanics, he said the fuel pump is fine, he is checking out ignition coil since it doesn't seem to be getting a spark.... he does not believe its the opti because that was replaced 2 yrs ago.... I'll post what the problem was when he let's me know....

The time to get rid of it is when you are tired of it? Think of it now, some cars have body off restorations completely rebuilt and like new. If you enjoy fixing it and driving it then you can't throw enough money at it. If it uses too much gas, rides rough, makes noise, it may be time.

When something goes down, ya' gotta' fix it now.

Other problems tend to get caught ahead of time when you fix one. But if you leave a problem, it will behave like a gray hair, or a fly uh-huh.

Swat a fly, it divides, and ya' got 2 of 'em. Pull a gray hair, you get 2 'of 'em.

I suppose... I generally give performance problems priority.... some of the little ones I wait to handle them together.... but no real complaints, with over 230k miles it has been a relatively trouble free car....

To put an engine in that's worth more than the car? Of course it'd do-able. Dont forget any transmission and other upgrades too.

I didn't take your comment as such... I guess its 6 and 1/2 dozen of the other as my mother would say... would I like an 06 or an 07 C6 Z06 that comes with 505 hp, I sure would, however, I don't have 50k-60k to drop on one...will 10-15k get me a C5 with 500hp? I look at it from the sleeper factor.... yeah it won't be the fastest thing on the road, but it may surprise a few snobs here and there...

I can appreciate a nice sleeper although the lop and roar of a finely tuned machine gets my attention too. The only thing that indicates mods on my 91 is the license plate and if you can read that your behind me.

Well, they're getting closer to that.
There's an 01 Z06 for sale here, immaculate, garage kept, older guy with only 30k on it for $22. If you could get it for $19, I'd say it was a good deal.

One of my HPDE students bought a 01 Z06 last year ( when they were higher priced) in the same condition for $23.

Wish I had $22 laying around.

interesting.... though to be honest I don't like the look of the C5 Z06.... if I were going for broke it would have to be a C6 Z06..... in the meantime however.....sticking a big engine in a C4 is looking like it could be fun...

the more I think about it the more I am leaning towards putting a 396 in it (the one I linked earlier), do the necessary suspension, brake, and tranny upgrades, and enjoy it.... as I said, while it may not be the fastest thing on the road, it will more than hold its own against these pesky imports and supercar wannabes....

yo, storm - Great to see you posting again!!!

I have done this math... and you are all debating the ROI.

Hot rodding, in general (meaning, is your name Chip Foose), is a bad ROI. Anything you buy is going to depreciate.

So, think about this:

You buy a 2001 Z06. Get it for $20k, put another $10 into the motor, you have $30k invested. 5 years from now, you would be lucky to have it worth $15k, tops. Remember, modified cars do not always sell for what they cost to build. That means that over the next 5 years, you will lose $15k.

Now, how long have you owned the 92?

If you take it, put the motor into it, you have actually HELPED it's value a little. The 92 is now worth about $6k, tops, so the depreciation has already been hit.

I would not do a 396, but a 383 will be a rocking good idea. I don't like the extra long stroke. A mild 383 with a super charger would be killer stout and be a lot nicer to drive. I 383 SC would be more expensive, yes, but the end result would be awesome.

Is your 92 a manual or automatic?

yeah I was missing you guys and I am saving my project money, because I am about ready to do this..... I have a 93 and its a automatic, I've had it for 8 yrs.... I could live with a 383 even supercharged as long as I can find a setup that is low maintenance.... Will I need to find someone to build the engine or does anyone know who sells something like that?

We picked up a 383 stroker vette (91) a couple of years ago. We didn't build it but I know the previous owner bought a crate GM motor and had it dealer intalled. He had the transmission upgraded added a Procharger Supercharger with twin intercoolers and a Maglaflow exhaust system. This vette rocks. The wife nailed it last night and lit up the tires, backed off and hit it again and relit them on a roll. This car is a handful. It's still a baby. Has less than 10k on the motor. The only problems I've had were external. Injectors bleeding down, an alternator and a starter. Most of the rest spent has been cosmetic. If you like your C4, you'd love being stroked.

I agree with Tommy. A stroker will really wake your car up and make it much more fun to drive.

I like late model Vettes a lot better when I'm looking at them in my rear view mirror!

stroker engines are essentially more power relatively low maintenance..... unless a supercharger is involved?
