As stated I got laid off today. Me and about 500 other employees. Looks like the holidays are going to be slim here. With some luck I'll be back in the workforce again soon. Just needed to vent

I do have two month severance pay. That gets my through the new yr. Medical benefits till end of Jan.

Mike.

What was worse is there was no warning signs at all about it. I survived one earlier this yr and we all thought things were safe for a while.

Hey man, I've been going through this almost annually, you get to recognize the signs....it will be OK, it's tough mentally to bounce back, but you will. Don't let it drag you down to the point where you can't be productive about replacing your income.

Not signs per say but there were rumors for about a month. No such thing this time.

My neighbor told me it just may be a blessing in disguise. I sure hope so. We'll get by but it sure put a change on our budget.

Sorry to hear that.

I know the feeling though. In my case, I do believe it to be a blessing. Hopefully you can turn it into a positive.

The lay offs weren't done by seniority either. One manager from our area and of the other two that I know of one had more than 30yrs service and the other had more than 20yrs of service. I had 11. The local news said 150 in here in Portland. There were more world wide that is why I say about 500 total.

Man, that sucks, dude...

What do you do for a living?

Don't let it get you down. We spend too much of our lives identifying with our jobs... find something you love and make it work.

Its been about 15 years ago now that I got laid off, but I worked for Westinghouse Electric in Baltimore from the time I was 18yo until I was 24. I then left and went back to college and each summer worked for them again. Then after graduation I was hired as a Manufacturing Engineer for another 4 years. We knew there were layoffs all around us, and the morning I was let go, my boss called a meeting and told us we ALL were safe and the layoff would not affect us.... Bullshit!!! Two hours later I called in with three other young guys. They said since we had no families, wives or kids we had to go...
It busted me up pretty bad since I felt like they practically raised me. They were all I knew pretty much. However in the long run it was better. I moved to South Carolina and met some wonderful people changed careers and got into training & development and I have never once looked back at a career in engineering again.

Like everyone said... Do not let it get you down. I know it will but stay afloat, go to any career center they set up or provide for you. Check out all the options. You'll find something.

Good Luck

I'm not letting it get me down. I did repair service for tektronix. IE electronic repair. My biggest problem is that I"m 43 with no degree. But hey the wife and I will make the best of it. Not much else we can do.
They didn't set any career center or offer retraining. I'm on my own for that.

Wrong answer. Most states offer retraining, if you so desire to take it.

IT? Stay away. It's going to hit the shitter about the time you are ramped up to get a job. It's just taking a little longer than expected.

That's patronizing, not helpful. Losing a job is no blessing at all. Get back out there and take what you can get and then go from there. If it has to be a step back, then I'd find something with a little flexibility that won't prevent you from doing interviews and looking for a better gig. Being with one company too long makes you hard enough to hire, let alone being unemployed for 6 months or so. Plus you'll go nuts if you can't stay busy 9 to 5...

Good luck and keep us updated.

One door closes, another opens. Many people have found a better career path as a result of getting laid off or fired. That's the blessing I believe your neighbor was implying. It's like getting dumped by a girlfriend. It sucks in the beginning but hopefully you find a better girlfriend and wonder what the heck you saw in the first one. Best of luck in your future pursuits.

I'm not to worried about the benefits. The wife has a very good job with good benefits. I'll just be full time on hers and not double covered like we were. The biggest change there will be having to have co pays now for DR. visits and prescriptions.

Like I told Ron there, make good use of your time. When you get on somewhere else, you'll wonder how you didn't get 'free time projects' done uh huh.

And of course, you'll get on somewhere soon. Stay so busy in the meantime, that you'll feel like you're gettin' a rest when you do start back yup.

In this economy it might take 2+ months to find a new one too, so don't wait till the severance runs out to start looking!

Not that I should be talking. Took me 2 months to get off my ass, and 6 more to find this job.

"Reasonable cost" and "COBRA" are rarely used in the same sentence. Fortunately, it sounds like Mike has benefits covered.
