Well, as mentioned in daily chat, we are finishing our basement. We have my wife's cousin doing most of the base work, I'll do some of the finish work. Here are a few pictures to get started:
Day 1, framing started: Moving junk off the walls Sill plates down Day 2, framing: Bathroom I'll post more as things come along. Day off today for the guys then they'll be back at it tomorrow to finish framing the walls and get the soffits done. Electrician is supposed to come Fri night and start pulling some wire. Plumber won't be here until the 11th. We'll just move along with what we can. Matthew |

Thanks guys. I am not doing (ie personally putting up) the framing with the metal, but it looks easier than with wood from watching Andy do it (wife's cousin's uncle by marriage...haha figure that one out). Put down a sill plate of pressure treated lumber then put down a metal track on top. Screw the studs in with sheet metal screws. Cutting is done with a pair of tin snips. To do a horizontal joint (like under the windows) he notched the sides then bent it the center over to make a 90*. He was trucking along pretty quick.
As far as cost difference, for my basement the difference was like $65 more using metal than wood. for 2.5" steel studs I paid 2.15 each vs 1.85 for wood. There are three different sizes for various things, 3.5, 2.5, 1 5/8. There are pros and cons for both wood and metal. I'm not gonna get into the whole debate, I just felt it better for my application. My BIL is almost finished with their basement and he used wood. Either or is fine. Couple sites: http://www.dietrichindustries.com/stu ... e/introtometalframing.pdf http://video.bobvila.com/m/21319325/b ... ming-with-metal-studs.htm Matthew |

OK, haven't gotten a lot done yet, but we started hanging a little drywall last night. Plumber will be here today to get the bathroom sorted out. Electrician will finish (hopefully) tomorrow. Plumber will be back Friday for finishing touches. I'd like to get as much drywall done by Friday night as I can. If that goes well, the patchers can come in Monday and start.

Your work is progressing well. One suggestion: put the check valve for your sump pump below the surface of the floor --in the pit right on the pump. Last year the connection on my pump failed, and all the water was discharging IN the basement. If you put the check valve in the pit, and screw it into the pump, there is only one connection with a clamp. That way there is less chance the clamp will fail. I have done this and it works great. I put two clamps on the valve where it connects to the discharge pipe, and put pipe clamps on the pipe where it runs up the wall to the outside. They hold the pipe to the wall firmly, giving it less chance of moving everytime the pump goes on.
Good Luck |

Thanks for the suggestion. I actually had mine go bad about 3 months ago. The PO/builder used the wrong size valve and the contortion and twisting over the years tore the rubber and sprayed the stuff all over the floor. I was able to fix it without too much trouble, but a PIA nonetheless. Plumber was here today and got started on the vent pipes and running the copper. We'll finish it up on Friday. I'll get some drywall put up today. Thanks for the comments, everyone. Matthew |

Looks great. Wish I had both my own sticks workin' better to do upgrades like that in my own place.
You wirin' in CAT5 lines for internet? Speaker wirin' for integral wall speakers/surround sound? IR ports for remote control entertainment center, lighting and HVAC? Intercom for the upstairs? HVAC is important. Nothin' worse than Gold's steamy saturated stinkin' gym in wintertime, with NO oxygen/ventilation. Makes for a lousy burn. EDIT: Scratch the intercom; only one person you gonna' hear from on that... "Honey, can ya' hear me now?" |

CAT5 is preexisting throughout the entire house. No surround sound, I have that upstairs and won't be putting it in the basement. If I do, I have a drop ceiling. As far as HVAC, I cut a couple vents, but my basement is almost as warm/cool as the rest of the house. I have a constant circulation HVAC unit that helps eliminate hot/cold spots. I don't need IR, I can use old fashioned switches
Got up 9 more panels last night on the walls and soffits. Going quicker than I expected, always a pleasant surprise. Matthew |

OK, drywall is 100% done as far as the hanging goes, including bathroom. Need to put up two more corner beads and pick up another one at the store tomorrow, that's about a 5 min job. Everything ready for the tapers to come in and do the finishing. After that we'll prime really quick and my cousin will get started on the drop ceiling and finishing. I also picked up a couple more base cabinets to stain and the countertop that will be on them.
A few more pics. Countertop I picked out: Matthew |

Wow, some good progress there!! I am really taking my time on mine on purpose. I dont want to feel rushed this time but it is time to kick it into high gear so I am going to hang some dry wall tomorrow and see how much we can get done. I have a tiny bit of electrical to do yet (2 outlets and 1 light) Lights already wired but I need to relocate it. I did my bathroom light/fan tonight and it took about an hour to do, the ducting did not want to cooperate. Looking forward to more pic and how your going to fit that very large counter top somewhere....lol.

Custom bench with storage underneath - very nicely done. Inside of bench. Counter top Johnny wanted to know about, it's covered, though. Sump pump is hidden, tv stand on top. Long wall. Looking good!!!! I do have one question, how did you guys cut the tile in such a perfect circle around the toilet flange? I need to know as I will be doing this in a week or two. I love the look of that tile layout so much that me and the wife are going to copy that. We were going to do a straight normal grid but that layout really breaks free from that and looks AWESOME!!

As for the toilet flange, you don't need a circle, the toilet will cover up all of it in front and back of the flange. Just try and get the flange about 1/4" above the tile, and make damn sure it's level in that area or the toilet may leak at the wax ring eventually. I pull the baseboards before putting tile down. |

Thanks for the comments. We did the brick pattern for two reasons: one, it looks cool; two, it's actually easier because the grout lines don't have to be as exact as with the standard pattern. We did use spacers. Plus the tiles we used are "rough edges" so if you're off a little it hides it well.
I will be finishing up the tile setting myself later tonight. Grout in the next couple days. Maybe on Tuesday, my day off. As far as cutting around the toilet flange, we marked a semicircle on the tile and then cut it with a 4" diamond wheel attached to an angle grinder. Very easy to do. Makes a mess, but oh well. Part of the drop ceiling is up. I'll get pics when that's done. Matthew |
