Finally!

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/autoc ... rings.html#post1569177039
Mojave;
This information is from an f-body forum (http://www.frrax.com ). These are designed for 4th gen f-bodies, but will fit C4's if the holes are drilled out or the bolts are installed the other direction.

These appear to be very well built, and hopefully the last set of hubs you'll ever buy. I'm just reposting this information here; I'm not involved with this business.

Any questions should be directed to Mike (contact info below).

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
MJM Racing is proud to present the first rebuildable, adjustable and regreasable front hub for 4th gen F-bodies. As most of you know already, these have been a long time coming and have gone though several interations and lots of testing over the last two years. If you've ever autocrossed with 315 Hoosier's or Kumho's, you know why these were developed.

Pictures can be seen here:
http://www.mjmracing.shutterfly.com/

Highlights:

1. New forged and hardened 4340 steel spindle made by Mark Williams Enterprises to MJM Racing, LLC specifications
2. Timken tapered roller bearings
3. Factory ABS retained
4. Original exterior dimensions retained for a "bolt on" application with no other modifications required.
5. Adjustable for bearing play, regreasable and rebuildable.
6. Comes with new ARP studs

We will begin to take orders on 1-1-09.

We need to get at least 20 pairs in the initial order to get the best pricing on machine work and parts. Please post any questions as well as stating your interest so a list can be compiled.

The initial price will be $650 each plus a core. That price will apply to this first initial offering only and these are only offered to the people of this site at this time. The core charge will be $100 per hub if you do not have any old ones you can send. Frankly, cores are necessary and if that ends up being too low of a core charge to get people to send cores, it will go up. Please be considerate and at least knock the big chunks of rust, dirt and grease off before you send them. If you have already sent cores to help with development your names are recorded and you need not send any additional cores (unless you want to).

Our lawyer has prepared a document that must be signed by each interested party prior to any transaction. A copy will be emailed to all who state they are interested in purchase.

Please post all questions here or call me, my PM folder is already a bit full.

Very cool.

I would presume if they're provided a Corvette core, then you'll get a bearing back that will fit the Corvette.

Although somebody should check with them on that. I can't justify the cost at this point in time.

Ok, the bearing shown on their website (aside from the threaded holes) will work on 84-85 and 91-96 Corvettes.

It will "fit" the 86-90 Corvette, but your ABS sensor is different, so I don't know if it will work with ABS.

Also, the 84-85 Corvette bearing was superceded by the 86-90 bearing. Most 84-85 owners with replacement front bearings, and all 86-90 owners will have a bearing that they may or may not be capable of modifying.

But somebody should ask and point them to this thread:

Here's the backside of the 86-90 vette bearing:
Resized Image

Here's the backside of the original 84-85 vette bearing:
Resized Image

Here's the backside of the 91-96 vette bearing:

(Those big holes in the wheel flange are for removing the knuckle bolts.)

I hate bothering the guy if I'm not even buying a set, but some Corvette owners will, so I'm just spilling the beans for them.

Brian, you've had these hubs apart right? Which type unit did you dissasemble? I presume the internals are the same.

What is so special about these hubs that make them un-rebuild able?

It seems that we may have to break something to get them apart...but we should find a replacement part to take that place...

The Tensioner on the serpentine belt is not supposed to be rebuild able either....$58 for a replacement tensioner or $11 for a Bearing at NAPA.

Can you tell I'm cheap?

The races are plastic, (see the mess above) so they break apart when you take them apart, and are real hard to put together unless you have a special tool

Cages are the finger things that space the Balls apart

The Race is the surface that the Balls role around on.

Plastic Races...no

Plastic cages...we could get a bearing house to give us bearings..........You can special order bearings in "half" sizes to take up slop from worn races.

I'm just throwing what I've seen in life......for the sake of discussion. There comes a time when parts are no longer available for certain cars

So what parts get consumed in the wheel bearings? Do you guys think that the Bearings are worn down over time? or what?

There's a few things going on.

1st the bearings are too close together.

2nd they are ball bearings not roller
Which is great for rolling resistance, but not good at all for wear

But the 1st two wouldn't be an issue if you could change the grease, which you can't.

When you take them to the track the bearings heat up and outgas, f@rt, when the cool down the suck air in, pulling contaminants with them.

GT cars change the grease and seals every event.
If we could do that, which these bearings allow, we'd be all set.

Did you destroy things when you took them apart? Besides the Cages what about snap rings?

I getting at this.......If they can be converted into being rebuild able someone could make a dime or two

The snap rings are fine, it's just a matter of finding a new bearing with metal cage that will fit, or alter the housing so they fit, which is what those guys did.

BTW they chimed in on the other forum:

I'd be happy to answer any questions you guys have. Feel free to call me.

In looking at the photos above of the older versions, I don't think mine will work with the ABS on the 86-90 and may not work for the 84-85 either.

I have a few questions for you guys. Will the 91-96 hub bolt up with the plastic ABS sensor cap in place? Is the reluctor ring on the 86-90 version exposed behind the upright? What about the 84-85, can the back of the bub be seen from the back of the upright?

The reason I ask is that the plastic cap is also the grease seal on that end of the hub. Unless the back of the hub is concealed by a pocket in the upright, the cap must remain.

I think I mounted 91-96 front bearings on my 85 and the abs all fit within the knuckle. Either that or I just removed the ABS cap. The knuckle hole is enclosed on mine anyways.

So yes, they should fit 84-85 without issue. But he's answering the wrong question. The question is, can he rebuild those earlier bearings using those as a core? Obviously he's not going to use Corvette cores for a Camaro owner.

I just checked my bearings on the rear, for example and they are ready to be replaced. The front more than likely also due to 100000 miles since last change. They were AC Delco up front, and BAE? for the rears. I have to say, its amazing the bearings cant be taken apart, as someone out there has to have a tool to do it. Someone.
I have a machinist here that would love to attack one of these. Anyone have an old one willing to ship to Hawaii?

You mean the parking lot stuff guys do with the cones? Nope.
Always built 1/4 mile cars. Does EVOC count?

I know some guys that do the SCCA stuff, but they don't use corvettes. Considering the turning radius on a C4 is 34 feet I can imagine why not.

I've got an '88 rear that I changed out. Any idea the shipping cost?

I still use street tires and the bearings hold up well. For time trials you take points for stickier tires plus having more maintenance has held me back from going to race compounds.

The price point is still too high at $650. I've come to terms with rear bearings being a wear item, like brakes and tires. I replace about 2 per season. I found a source that sells cheap-o's for $50 each. So that's 13 bearings before they pay for themselves. And there still isn't a rebuildable rear that I know of.

Fronts last a couple of seasons...in fact, I've only replaced my fronts twice in 10 years. Of course only the last 5 were serious track use.

In other words, the concept is sound, the cost is not justifiable. I'm guessing it's just as much work to take them off for a rebuild, so where is my savings?

I bet you'd get more out of them if they had some easy miles on them before you started abusing them.

I put maybe 15K on mine before they saw their first track day. I don't run the car much, but I'm expecting these tapered rollers to last awhile.

Where are you getting rear bearings for $50?

I'm having trouble visualizing how you'd repack them. Would this be possible while the hub is still on the car? If so, you're on to something.

I get the cheap ones from some ebay store, I think it's MAC auto or something, in New York. I'll have to check my receipts at home if you really want to know. Matt (mrc24x) found them and passed the info along. I use the older C4 style as I don't have ABS anymore, but I think the 92+ style are still only $65. I just buy 4 at a time, they usually do shipping deals, like pay for one the second one's free.

It's certainly possible that they'd last longer, I've read that before. Unfortunately it's not an option, the car is clearly not street legal so I'd have to do my break in at the track. At $2000 a weekend for a few hours of track time I'd rather bring some extra bearings than tool around at break-in speeds ;)

I'll have to see when I put them on.

But I think I'll be able to pop the ABS sensor cover with it on the car.

In that case I can change the grease real easy.

I got a response
MJM Racing LLC

Brian,

I read through that post and I appreciate the support. I'm not sure there is much I can add. But I think your idea of trying to regrease on the car is a bit too optimistic. Even if you can get the ABS cap off while still on the car, you would still need to remove the brakes and rotor to get the spindle/flange out of the housing. At that point, it's only 4 more bolts and the ABS plug to remove the whole thing. Also, they go together a bit tighter than you may think. They don't just fall apart when the spindle nut is removed.

Now if you can get the ABS cap off while it's in place, you should be able to adjust out any play without removing it. This can not be done on an F-body.

You may also be overly conservative on how often they need to be greased. For track use, I recommend regreasing before each race weekend just to be safe. For street and autox, every 4-6 events or every other oil change is probably more than enough.

The only downfall to a maintainable hub... is that you have to maintain it.

PS, I'd be happy to take a look at the C4 rear bearings if some one has an old one they want to get rid of, C5/6 fronts as well. Although I thought there were aftermarket upgrades available for both already. You are welcome to post my number 303-710-9297 if anyone wants to contact me.

Thanks,

Mike
Well, just to be a prick, I can get to the track in 35 minutes and I get all the free testdays I want. :binky:

yeah, but I can't fit my car in my pocket, and having an extra burger for lunch doesn't slow it down by destroying the pwr/wt ratio!

It's easy really, you buy my "broken in" bearings for $100 each and send me 2 new ones.

Deal of the century! CC would probably scrub in your new A6s too.

That's actually not as ridiculous as it sounds...but probably a lot more work for you. I change them all the time, anyway. And a few street miles aren't going to reduce their life any for my purposes.

BTW, I just received a timely email from the store with the cheap bearings. Here's thier info for anyone interested:

315 Boston Post Road • Port Chester, NY 10573
(800) 209-9598
www.MACAUTOPARTS.NET

More importantly, they sent me a $10 off coupon code for my next order. So make that $40 each for rear bearings...

I got the bearing installed this weekend.

He uses the Firebird housings, so it's tapped for a bolt, as opposed to clear drilled like the Corvette bearings

No problem I just put the stock bolts in from behind.

Man I didn't realize how shot my front bearing was until I replace it!

The steering is nice and tight now.

I have purchased fronts from there last year. Give them a call. I assume they still do, but I guess anything's possible.

Did you look on ebay? We originally saw them on ebay.
