Has anyone had their hood release break? There is an emergency tool on the market. I may route a short piece of cable from the latches, through the hood seal, terminated near the wiper post with a loop. Hopefully, the hood can then be opened if there is a malfunction with the factory setup.

Every C4 owner should do this. Stay with the wire type and not the plastic ties some have. They will get brittle and break. It is a royal PIA to get your hood open when your cable fails, been there, done that and got the t-shirt

If you need to make a tool, this is what it looks like.

Yep, I made that tool 2 days after I got the C4. After looking at the price of the ones for sale, I made one for $2 and 10 minutes of my time.

I installed the emergency cable kit this spring, just to be on the safe side.

I found that tool works Ok on the drivers side, but was useless on the passenger side. Removing your tire and inner fender wells was the only way I could get my pass. side open.

How many of you have had any luck with that tool?

Thanks for motivating me. I'm taking a road trip soon and trying to cover all my bases. A little spiral wrap and shrink tube and it's hardly noticeable. Hopefully never needed.

Christ flyboy, I can barely see it and I'm looking for it.
Good job

i'll be doing mine while i'm under the hood, i fear every time i close the hood that it'll never open again. i had some trouble opening it monday and it scared the crap out of me. luckily the latches were just sticky and hosing pb blaster in there from the cowl helped.

Oddly enough I'm selling one of those tools. I bought it ($50) to open my hood when I first got the car.

Doesn't anyone find it funny that we have to route an 'emergency' hood opening cable in case the primary system fails? wtf?

I found the hood opening tool was only good for scratching
the living bejesus out of the underside of my hood. I have a free hood opening tool for sale, but it is at the bottom
of the pond behind my house. PM me if you want to come and get it

Pappy, I can't remember ever and I mean ever not have the hood open when I needed it to. Mind you in the "old days" we had to actually get out of the car to open the hood. Hey maybe I'm on to something here!

You know what, i saw this thread today and figured i'd be proactive and cautious and install the homemade emergency release cables. I've never been worried about the cable breaking, but i guess it could happen at any time. (not a comforting feeling). But now i'm all better. :D

I've been thinking about doing this for years. It's not like it takes very long to do it. It's one of those shoulda, woulda, coulda items. When you get stuck, at least you have an easy out.
