Good Morning CGs!

Happy Memorial Day. I hope everyone has a fun, enjoyable, and safe day off. But don't forget to remember the veterans who served for us.

A brief history of Memorial Day:

Quote:

http://www.usmemorialday.org/backgrnd.html

Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service. There are many stories as to its actual beginnings, with over two dozen cities and towns laying claim to being the birthplace of Memorial Day. There is also evidence that organized women's groups in the South were decorating graves before the end of the Civil War: a hymn published in 1867, "Kneel Where Our Loves are Sleeping" by Nella L. Sweet carried the dedication "To The Ladies of the South who are Decorating the Graves of the Confederate Dead" (Source: Duke University's Historic American Sheet Music, 1850-1920). While Waterloo N.Y. was officially declared the birthplace of Memorial Day by President Lyndon Johnson in May 1966, it's difficult to prove conclusively the origins of the day. It is more likely that it had many separate beginnings; each of those towns and every planned or spontaneous gathering of people to honor the war dead in the 1860's tapped into the general human need to honor our dead, each contributed honorably to the growing movement that culminated in Gen Logan giving his official proclamation in 1868. It is not important who was the very first, what is important is that Memorial Day was established. Memorial Day is not about division. It is about reconciliation; it is about coming together to honor those who gave their all......

(more on page)

That's it for me. Enjoy the holiday. And if you didn't take 2 minutes to read that selection, you're a prick.

Hope everyone has a great day!

Matthew

This piece on the news last night - a gal my wife used to work with had a boyfriend who joined the Marines and went to Vietnam, and was killed there in 1968. Even though she later married and had a family, she always grieved for him with his family, and they had been looking for answers all these years:

http://wcco.com/specialreports/vietna ... an.Michael.2.1018171.html

We had a nice day yesterday - the weather was perfect. We visited the cemeteries where my parents are, and where my father-in-law is. My father-in-law taught me just about everything - how to work on cars, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, drywall, you name it. It was good to share a lot of stories. I put some of his teaching to good use later in the afternoon when I had a moral victory over a lawnmower that has been giving me some fits. A BBQ later and watching the Twins win while sitting out on the deck made for a nice end to the day.

Have a great day, everyone!

Geeze, Brad, stories like that give me goosebumps when I read them. Sad to hear when anyone has lost their life in service of our country, and we often forget about the families and friends who are impacted, as well

Good Morning Gurus!

A salute to those who have fallen, and those who continue to fight.

I have a busy day of work ahead, so I better get to it.

Enjoy your day, Gurus!

Not only do we suffer for the ones we've lost, we agonoize for those that have sacrificed their minds and limbs in defense of this great nation. Some have come back but they've never come home.

Lots of mundane chores on the roster. It will only get done if I go and do it. I'll kick back later with a swim, some BBQ and enjoyable tunes out on the pool deck. Ah, life is tough. The wife and son are working today so at least I can enjoy some peace...... for now.

Happy Memorial Day, Gurus!

Thanks for the history, Matthew.

A friend of mine's little brother was killed in Afghanistan in Nov 2007. At the funeral, besides learning even more about what a wonderful person Matty was, what struck me was the age of the attendees. They were all his friends and colleagues in their 20s - so young.

Just got back from Huntsville. Man if I wasn't so old I'd pack up, move down there and start all over, just for the fishing. If I can reschedule some things I might go To Arkansas for a week to do some fishing in the next week or two.

That was almost exciting... A friend gave me a power antenna... what to do... I know! I will put it in the Jeep!

So the Beater Jeepers has a power antenna! Works really good and looks OEM. It's a satin black chrome finish. Looks real nice, actually.

Now I need to fix the blower motor resister. It's fried.

Worked my tail off again today. Got the drawers built the face frames on and sanded, the panels for the doors glued up and the shop cleaned up a bit. It's been a long day. The daughter and family left a little before noon (over 6 hour drive for them), but we still have the 2 older girls, they get to stay with Grandma and Grandpa for the week. The in-laws are still here as FIL is still helping me get the cabinets built. Sure hope some of you had a restful holiday, it'll make up for mine.

I had a boring, 6 hour drive back to New Hampshire.
My mother in law was released from the hospital today, so good news there.
Finished up with an oil change on the wife's Hyundai.
Beer time.
