What happened to a group of guys getting together, cruising most the night, going from spot to spot, going out and having a good time with their cars?
Noone out here wants to do anything more than meet once a month for donuts, comparing gold chains and going home. Guess everyone is getting old and lazy. |

2011 Memorial Day Car Show Winner!
|
I remember those days too! I had a Hot Camaro back then and we would hang out at Burger King and a local department store lot, running short bursts from light to light with the local Ford and Mopar guys.
I think that is pretty much frowned on these days, but it was a lot of fun. We have a couple Friday night cuise-ins sponsored by the local classic car club. A lot of street rods show up for those events, but again they go home by 8:00pm just when the night is young. |

In my case, it is called "marriage".
I used to work ten hours, drive to my buddy's house, drive about six hours just to cruise, then go home and sleep for a couple hours, and repeat. It was great! |

Its sad..whats missing from the hobby.Over here anyway.
Thinking about going to a cruise night tomorrow but every time its the same old thing....Must be the crowd is getting older...Going to meet up and look around is great and all but once dusk falls I wanna go out and have some fun-and usually fly solo or say the hell with it all together. "I just washed it", " Its too far", "Dont want to put any miles on it". Ugh. Last experience I had like that was meeting/caravanning to Famoso raceway with a few members, hitting the diner on the way up, at the track til midnight. Hitting the road home at 1 in the morning, stopping off at a Dennys for some greasy food and BS, getting home at 4. Love it. Thats what owning a car is all about. |

You're bringing back some fond memories...
We used to drive from Harrisburg, PA to Bel Air, MD just to go to a little place called Frank's Pizza. I don't know that the pizza was any better in Maryland than in Pennsylvania, but something about pizza far from home late at night makes it seem better. Then there were the stops at a truck stop just off of exit #1 at the south edge of I 83 in PA... We used to grab a couple cans of Jolt Cola to keep us awake until we got back home. I never actually ever tried battery acid, but I imagine Jolt Cola tastes similar. Good times! |

You are right.
Was talking to a member of another forum out in OK. the other night about a part for the 67, he said the same thing. Once this generation (older crowd) of musclecar guys pass on Its Over. I know one thing,I cant be alone. At some point in the future I will rattle someones cage whos about to drift off to sleep with a random 7500 rpm blast or two in the dead of night. |

The car hobby has changed. The price of entry for a musclecar or Hotrod is out of reach of most of the guys that would drive them and use them as intended. The vehicles on the road today for the most part are appliances and the owners are tickled to death with them for some strange reason.

Also - for a gap of years many people were stupified by computer controlled cars and sensors. I think this kind of moved some folks away from tinkering with thier cars until lateley when things are becoming more user friendly. |

The police have alot to do with this as well. According to the old timers drag racing was a common site in the old days no big deal. Get caught just watching a FN race and your ass is getting six points.

Nobody believes me when I tell them I'm 38. They think I'm late 20's-Early 30's. But that may be because I wear jeans and Hawiian shirts all the time, only shave when I feel like it, refuse to take myself seriously and laugh hysterically at dick and fart jokes. |

I always liked a non year/model specific cruise in. Homestead used to have a nice one and it was mainly to bring people to the old downtown to patronize the restaurants and ice cream parlor and shops. I used to meet up with a lot of friends there. After several years the show faded away mainly because people weren't spending a lot of money, they closed down the main drag and had to pay about 6 cops for the night to hang out. Now it's just another memory. When I was a teenager we used to cruise out to Norwood Mass. to a place called Artie Johnsons (I think). It was during the muscle car years. Hamburgers, hot dogs, fries and shakes. Then around 11:00 P.M. the rubber met the road. Some really serious machinery. Chevelle SS's, Goats, Vettes, Camaros with some Dodge, Plymouth and Ford products thrown in. They ran till the officers returned and ran everybody off. That place was hot through the fifties and sixties.Ohh the memories. Those were the best days of my life. |

Disclaimer: I in no way condone street racing although I did some when I was young and stupid(er.) But I do like this song....
Racing in the Street by Bruce Springsteen I got a sixty-nine Chevy with a 396 Fuelie heads and a four on the floor *Poster's note- Fuelie heads on a 396, hmmmmmm But I digress....* She's waiting tonight down in the parking lot Outside the Seven-Eleven store Me and my partner Sonny built her straight out of scratch And he rides with me from town to town We only run for the money got no strings attached We shut `em up and then we shut `em down Tonight, tonight the strip's just right I wanna blow `em off in my first heat Summer's here and the time is right For goin' racin' in the street We take all the action we can meet And we cover all the northeast state When the strip shuts down we run `em in the street From the fire roads to the interstate Some guys they just give up living And start dying little by little, piece by piece Some guys come home from work and wash up And go racin' in the street Tonight, tonight the strip's just right I wanna blow `em all out of their seats Calling out around the world, we're going racin' in the street I met her on the strip three years ago In a Camaro with this dude from L.A. I blew that Camaro off my back and drove that little girl away But now there's wrinkles around my baby's eyes And she cries herself to sleep at night When I come home the house is dark She sighs "Baby did you make it all right" She sits on the porch of her daddy's house But all her pretty dreams are torn She stares off alone into the night With the eyes of one who hates for just being born For all the shut down strangers and hot rod angels Rumbling through this promised land Tonight my baby and me we're gonna ride to the sea And wash these sins off our hands Tonight tonight the highway's bright Out of our way mister you best keep `Cause summer's here and the time is right For goin' racin' in the street |

I think it can be relatively safe depending on where's its done. But for some of these "street racers" that are the ones making the newspaper, racing isn't even the point.
The road by my work, is an industrial park, 1 mile long, very wide, dead end, and is rarely used on weekends or after 6pm. Yet there's still kids that choose to go street racing down Mira Mesa blvd 3 blocks away in traffic. |
