Sigh...

My Mom passed away yesterday. She died from a combination of pneumonia and being frail and 90.

Over the last few years, she had been dealing with, and losing the battle of, dementia.

This wasn't much of a surprised, her health had been declining over the last 30 days, and the last 4 days specifically.

She started to experience breathing issues and pain, and they started morphine on Thursday. She lapsed into something of a coma not long after and died on Sunday.

There will be no services, per her request. We are sorting out any donations in lieu of flowers.

thanks, gang.

It's settling in now... The dementia took her a long time ago, but she was happy and at peace with things.

My Dad died in 1977 - I was ll... And my brother Roy died in 2003. I still have an older brother and he and I are very close. Thankfully, I am not alone. I do also have bastet44, which is a total blessing.

The week has lightened. It has been a real roller coaster.

Last week, we went to Estes Park, CO, for my nephew wedding. We were driving there on Thursday when we got the call that Mom was not feeling well and her breathing was quite laboured.

The wedding site was a cellphone free zone, so we didn't get a lot of info on Friday, which is fine. However, my brother did get a picture texted to him from the nurse. Mom looked real frail. It was a sad picture, really. Very sad.

Somewhere near Gallup, NM, my brother called and told me she had just passed away. About noontime eastern.

I am glad for the long drive home, it helped me clear my mind and focus on the important things... and gave me some isolation to do that. I was also able to call a number of close family friends to let them know Mom was gone.

Thank you all for your kind words. They are very helpful in times like these... just reassurance that people still care. And that is important.

Most important, if you haven't seen my post on facebook, was thanks... serious thanks. Between the time I moved to CA and Mom moved to FL, my sister-in-law, Caroline, my late brother Roy's widow, did a lot to keep Mom safe and provide company! She would even drag her husband over from time to time (in all honesty, he wasn't a stranger in our world, a good guy, too, glad they are happy!)

And after the move... Helen kicked ASS. That is my brother Paul's wife. She did amazing things to help Mom, while caring for her own parents. She visited several times a week, spent time with her, took her to the dining hall, the salon, outside, threw birthday and holiday parties... her endless patience, love, and boundless energy are simply inspirational to me.

<hugs>

PS: Added a family pic from last year. This was taken at my Mom's assisted living center in FL.

Going clockwise, it's Mom, me at 9 o'clock, my sister-in-law, Helen, at noon, and my brother Paul, at 3.
