way to go!

Now, use this new life as a way to put your old one in the past. Keep a postive attitude... don't let the world get you down.

I don't know what you are trained to do or be, but you may have to suck it up and build a rep in FL. This might mean mowing lawns for a season... or changing oil at a jiffy lube... it may not be romantic, but it will be a brighter place.

When I moved out here, I couldn't get jack. What saved my day was hurricane Katrina. I got a job with FEMA and that was that.

Where in FL?

Congrats and good luck! Might suck at first when the cash runs out and you are scrounging to make ends meet, but it's worth it in the end. Hard work will pay off!

Congrats on your decision ProZac!

I did the same (just over 20 years ago now) and my wife and kids continue to applaud me for doing it!

It was a really difficult change for me personally....and I kept telling myself: "stupid move, you idiot." But they were right. I've (we've) made a new life here.

And it's good.

When I got out of the Air Force 30 years ago, I wanted to go back home to Boston but they were looking at double digit unemployment. No job opportunities. So I stayed with my inlaws for a couple of months till I got a job in Floridah. I expected to stay 5 years. I'm still here 30 years later with with no regrets. Everyplace else is just a few hours away by plane. A warning though, wages in Florida are typically low compared to other places.

i am currently in fernandina beach. i found a really small really cheap apartment. i have been applying for a bunch of jobs. i am not set in stone staying here but being by the ocean is sweet! i could do anything. i have a strong mechanical background. i worked on refueling vehicles in the air force for 8 years, made e-5 in 4 years and for the last 2.5 years i was with an excavation company doing literally everything. laborer, operator, parts getter, equipment transporting, digitizing plans, estimating, inviocing, letters, billing. i took a few classes on water polution prevention erosion also on how to use an estimating program. i have plenty of computer skills and am willing to learn. i am currently looking for something without manual labor cause my knee is getting the best of me.

Jacksonville is one of the cities I am thinking of transplanting to eventually.
Let me know your opinion of the area after getting comfortable.

About a year ago, I researched the Jacksonville area online (actually my wife did) Supposedly, in that general area, employment opportunities are good, real estate prices and property taxes are generally low, and quality of life is quite high.
Because I travel for a living, I need to be within 1/2-1 hour of a semi major airport. On paper, Jacksonville area made good sense.

Amelia Island area is sweet from everything I've heard. Jacksonville rush hour traffic is a nightmare so stay on the fringes if you can. You might be able to get something here (link) while you look for a more permanent job.

Florida cities are vastly diverse and each area has it's own personality. You'll find that out soon enough.

Your last words when you leave the office:

"What time should I be here in the morning?"

You be there when the boss gets to work, and he'll put you to work. Promise. In this tough job market, if they need somebody, they NEED somebody.

Heh. A motor swap a day before a cross country drive. You sound like me.

Good luck! In my experience, many employers aren't putting 100% effort into hiring, even if they need it. You can make their job easier by just showing up at places that aren't even posting a position and trying to bug them.

I keep saying I am going down south... but I never seem to get there.

I will try to move to South Carolina or Florida within the next 3 years. I would love to move to California, but its too far and too expensive.

The only reason I am moving is because of the snow. I just can't take anymore snow. I hope I can make it thought at least one more season.

The weather is great here in S. Cal., so good all the bums migrate here for the winter. It only takes one cardboard box to make a bed in this climate. I don't think the job market is much better than anywhere else. I mean starting pay at Mc Donalds is $25.00 an hour, but if you consider that a quart of milk cost $1000.00 you get the idea. Working for the govt. is feeling the pinch too, two days with no pay and the loss of two holidays to start off, maybe layoffs in the near future??? Things suck hope they get better.
