Well, it finally happened... I'm exhausted and trying to figure out my next move. I did this removal by myself this morning and it would have been a lot easier with another person to assist while jacking the car and the engine to get clearance. I did have two small mishaps which I can survive through, but still pisses me off because I was well aware of the risk.

As much as I knew that the oil pressure sender on the back of the manifold is venerable, I still wound up snapping it off. I watched it closely the whole time and it had plenty of room, but when I wasn't watchin' it must have rebounded into the firewall. The other booboo I did was jack the car up with the hood open and forgot about the garage door overhead... I NEVER forget about this, but I did today. I scratched the passenger side point of the hood and chipped the fiberglass a bit. That really pisses me off more than the oil sender.

Goes to show that you can't let your guard down ever when doing this kind of work. I'd been really pissed if someone else did this to my car!!

I'll be taking it to the machine shop later in the week.

It wasn't too long ago I did the top end rebuild.. perhaps two years ago and less than 5K miles into it.

I meant to take the opti cover off but stripped the rest of the block instead. Opti's shaft spins nice and freely without feeling broken or otherwise screwed up.

I pulled the pan - Visually I could not see any damage from a simple peak. I did find a couple tiny metal shavings... but I mean tiny! I'm sure there is a bearing shredded no doubt.

I'll be taking it to the builder this week.

Awesome, Don. Hope you took a lot of pictures. And by a lot I mean more than you already took

The hood thing sucks, I did that myself And that oil pressure sensor is gonna hurt when you buy the new one for $100.

Nice to see you got it out with the headers installed, that will be much easier when you put them back in.

Also, that happy hooker is a great tool. I wish they had something like that for the L98.

And... now its on the stand stripped down.

That stand was a PITA to get it to fit on the motor. Lots of squeezing and bending to get the mounting holes to line up. I bet the guys at the machine shop won't mess with putting it back on that piece of crap.

Don - sorry, I should have given you a tip about the stand. So for guys in the future:

Don't completely tighten the stand until the motor is bolted to it first, then go ahead and snug it up.

Yeah, I knew that... Mine was worse than that. As you know they state that it fits SB and BB Chevy. I had to actually bend the uprights in quite a bit. Anyhow, for future people using this stand, get all the bolts started and then go around and tighten them after the stand in where it needs to be.

Good Job, Don.

Yea the garage door thing, lucky for me, my door only has white foam that I put in the panels. That's what the hood points hit when I jacked it up. Also lucky that I didn't have it jacked up like that and then opened the door, that would have been bad.

Remember the thread about extending your doors?

Yup! Its not a problem unless the car is up in the air. I hope I can get someone to touch it up good. Its a pretty good scratch on the passenger side.

Being the brillient person that I am, I made a shorter prop rod that sat on the intake and kept the hood lower. It worked great right up until the wrench slipped and I hit the rod with my hand.

The hood came down on my head.

No kidding? I thought it only bolted in to the lt1 intake manifold? If I would have known that I would have bought one for myself.

Just as Andy said. Bolts to the four fuel rail bolts on the lower intake.

What the deuce?

Two comments - holy cow how is your motor that beautifully clean? And secondly, that's the strangest motor yank I've seen. I pull off the headers, PS lines and resivoir, etc. It wasn't a major PTA to pull it with all that stuff on it?

Perhaps it's because I usually pull the motor and trans together.

So was there a final decision on the rebuild? Or is it back in that other thread?

No problem at all removing the engine with that suff on it. The collectors were just short enough to clear and it slipped right out. I did this myself and if it would have been a problem I would have called in for some backup, but not really necessary.

Nothing final yet. Engine went to the builder today and I'm leaning toward the 383, but I could save a ton of change by staying at 350cui. After they pull it apart and look at it closely this week, I'll have another discussion with him and reiterate my goals and see where that takes me.

How about posting a photo of the broken one. I have a brand new, never been installed ACDELCO sender/sensor I bought from GM last year but I didn't need.

It's the shorter of the two but doesn't have a part number on it.

My son's 96 Vette has two mounted at the back of the block we replaced one of them but didn't need to on the other other.

So if you need the one I have, and it'll work for you, you can get it for a LOT less than $100. If you'd prefer to buy your own, no problem, I'll just leave mine in one of my wall storage boxes.

i have seen the engine installed/removed with long tubes on.. i don't think people realize how much room you are working with. i put my headers on afterwards cause i didn't have them at the time of installing my new engine. i have installed an engine with shorty headers before without issue.

The long one is the oil pressure sensor for the IP, the short one is the oil pressure switch for the parallel fuel pump backup circuit.

The one I have is the short one; probably not the one that you broke though. It's in an ACDELCO box - I bought both of them from Chevy and both were in ACDELCO boxes, but mine may not be in the same box in came in.

IIRC one of the boxes got oiled up, so I threw that box away and put the un-used switch into the clean box. No part # on the switch either. The # on the box is 10096136.

Just for future reference, guys: Anything I sell to a Forum member is guaranteed 100% - If you don't want it you'll get a Full money back refund, which INCLUDES SHIPPING - for any/whatever reason; no questions asked. I won't "STICK" ANYONE WITH ANYTHING! Not the cut of my jib.

I talked with my engine builder Jerry Jackson again today. He called to let me know what he found so far. Not only was one bearing toasted, but in his words a “slew” of them. He wanted to know if I had oil in the pan before my run? LOL
Anyway, if you were one of the guys present at the track when the car got towed back in you would have verified, the oil was at normal level and actually pretty clean looking.

Obviously it’s an oiling issue, but the top end was clean and no galling of pushrods or roller rockers. Top is good! Yes! That is good. He will be doing some other work to the heads other than what was done last time, just to get a couple more cfm if we can. He feels the intake ports are too smooth as he can see evidence of fuel condensing and pooling in some areas, plus he said the original porter didn’t do complete port matches. He said they were marked but not completed. That was odd as I didn’t remember seeing any marking dies on the heads before. He will be line honing the block tomorrow and then checking to see if it requires to line bored.

Getting excited.. 383 here we come! After sitting all summer, something is actually happening!!

A link to a few of the photos of the engine coming out.

Well. yeah now, for sure.

I stopped by today to see how things were going and had a few revelations.

The crank is trashed. Every journal was heavily scored, with multiple bearings totally shot. Perhaps one bearing set was less worse than the others.

My heads, although in great shape need some work to make them better. Jerry put them on his flow bench and although they flowed ok, they didn't flow as well as I was told initially, especially at lower lift levels where is really counts. .30-.50. They had lots of carbon built up on the intake runner floors and Jerry said they were just too smooth. Additionally, there was a lot of material still left during the gasket matching. That will be cleaned up as well.

So... I am definitely going with the stoker as I need a new rotating assembly anyway. I'll be getting a new cam spec as well.

It looks like its going to cost more than I thought, but I expected some changes.

Good to hear things are coming along, Don. So you decided to stroke it after all, huh?

Have you been able to pinpoint what was causing the oiling issue?

They haven't really identified a specific problem. Jerry has not taken the oil pump apart, nor did he find anything that jumped out during disassembly. The top end (pushrods, rockers) all look great and show no sign of oil deprivation. The bottom end on the other hand had gotten very hot and really thrashed things down below - however no rods were actually broken loose. The block is in good shape and still usable. It was line honed yesterday and the caps all are good.

Its odd though that the top end was still getting oil, (or so it appears) but the bottom looks oil starved.
