I had to replace the waterpump on my 92 today.

So I decided to get clever and replace it with a 1996 style part. This is good because it removes this stupid t-connector on the upper rad hose.

But... try as I might, I cannot find a single upper rad hose in my town. Hell, Autozone, Pepboys and Kragen don't even LIST IT. What happens to one of us with this design and we get stuck on the freeway with a blown one? Screwed, is the answer I suspect.

Oh, NAPA shows one, but the nearest NAPA that is actually open is far...

To add insult to injury, I can't find water pump gaskets, either. I am utterly speachless. The computers will show two, and they are not there. I might just have to cut them myself... If I can find material.

Ugh.

This is as bad as the double sided belt on the 92/93's.

That's EXACTLY why I stuck to the L98.

And you're in the HEART of C4 Country.....Imagine what it's like up here in Canada!

My parts guy KNOWS it's an LTx....but never fails....he's ALWAYS askin' "Thats, what? an LT5?" Finally I answered him one day "Yes it is. Can you get it?" To which he always answers "Of course not".
They DO, however have every single item ever needed for a 1978 Ford F150.

My only other option is go the local 'speed shop', get charged 30% more.....and constantly be told "You're leaving power on the table, you know?"

Bogus if you make it up this way tomorrow I may still have some gasket paper you can have.

Guess I am lucky. Every single part I have needed has always been in stock, usually the local AutoZone, eveything from pads and rotors to hoses to the opti.

I am going out tonight... I think I can make it rather quickly, cause I want to hi-tack them onto the pump now, so the tack has a chance to set up. Putting these pumps on SUCKS with the gaskets moving around.

Thanks, tho!

I am still not sure about tomorrow... the 118 is closed at the 405, so is the 5... it's bad news. I will check roads tomorrow.

Thank goodness for NAPA. I really think they're about the last thing resembling a true parts store in existence.

It's kind of ironic that the SBC that was always the engine that you could get anything for, all of the goodies were made for and cheap too. But now we LTx owners definitely have the red-headed, bastard step-child of all small block Chevys.
But I'm not complaining. I've enjoyed modifying it, it runs like a mofo and it's been incredibly reliable.

Napa more often than not was the place to go when the cheaper ones failed you, but around here, 2 of the 3 napas are just plain horrible.

One is the regional warehouse and has good inventory, but most of the clerks there are too stupid to find what they have in stock. At least Autozone doesn't get my hopes up.

Actually the autozone within walking distance has one manager that is pretty knowledgable and babysits the others. I assume that means he'll quit as soon as something better comes along.

All the nearby NAPA's are closed on Sunday.

I have to drive 20 miles to find an open one. Seriously.

I do like the LT1. It's quite refined and a great engine... just don't expect much (any) aftermarket support.

Wow, I never had a problem with anything I needed for my 93 or 94 LT-1 engines. Auto Zone or NAPA always came through for me. I was even able to get the double sided Serp belt from Auto Zone on the spot.....

You got lucky... last time I checked, AZ does not even list the 2 sided belt!

Ok... the gaskets are cut! They are drying on the waterpump so tomorrow I can ream out the holes and clean up the ports. I am using copper RTV to hold them to the pump. I will use hi-tack on the block. That should do it. I may still use RTV on the block side... haven't decided yet.

I found a package of blockoffs. One fits pretty damned well and with a clamp will be a good stop-gap until I can get the right upper rad hose.

I will call NAPA first thing Monday morning...

I was stoked when a NAPA opened up on this end of the valley a few years ago. I have been in there twice and realized I would never get anythign without a spanish to english dictionary, it was seriously that bad. Never went back.

Yeah, certainly no parts store can be any better than their help. Some of our AZs have some good guys and some of the NAPA guys are duds. Fortunately we have plenty of NAPA stores and I have a certain one that's close and where I know the help. The main thing I prefer about NAPA is their overall parts quality. I don't think anyone touches them there.

They almost can't GIVE away LT1's...

When I thought I was lookin' at pullin' mine, I checked on puttin' in a new anything. Doug Henry Chevy said LS1 $5300 installed. I'll consider that. How 'bout LT1? $3300 IN. Motor was ONLY $1900. Resized Image

I had been looking forward to a car cruise back in October. A few hours before I was to leave I lifted the hood, and there was a 2" split in the outer jacket of the "T" to radiator hose. I checked with Napa, O'Reilly's, Autozone, Carquest, and three local dealerships. Not in stock, but on the way home there is a small parts house. They had two in stock, $8 each. Ten minutes to change it, and I was on my way.

Are there any differences between the pumps besides the radiator hose fitting? IE like the optis that have different dowel pins, timing cases, etc?

Car Quest man, Car Quest. Most of their parts are OE parts, and they can usually come up with the part in a couple hours if they don't have it in stock.

This is as bad as the double sided belt on the 92/93's.

I've been carrying self sealing tape in my cars for 20 years, the company I worked for invented it. It works really well. They have it in stores as emergency hose repair kits now, at least it'll get you to a water source.

LT1's? Yea, well we're stuck with them. But I still like them.

I've been using The Right Stuff with no gaskets lately, no problems.

I switched out the double sided belt because of the supply.
I do have a good used double sided tensioner and belt, and a new tensioner and belt for sale if anyone's interested.

Plus they've got no online catalog. So you can't avoid the sticker shock when you go in the store, and have to call to check inventory.

Ohmigosh. That's a stinker. Sounds like a vacuum-sealed cranium.

I can see it already - put all the sockets back, wrenches off the plenum, pliers screwdrivers off the fan shield, start to pour the coolant in the filler HUH WHAT'S THIS ON THE GROOVE IN THE FILLER TANK? aaaaarrrrrrrgggggggg.

That's a REAL stinker uh huh.

I had a problem with my coupler too. Too much grease on each shaft, and a little in the coupler for good measure, and guess what wouldn't 'squeeze out', and let the pump drive go in??? A clue - it wasn't the MAF connector nope.

I pulled it, trying to not contaminate the gaskets, removed some grease, and tried again. Same no-go. Tried driving with the bolts a little at a time, and heard a pop, which did NOT sound like a grease fart, and decided to do it again, before I broke more stuff.

That was a stinker yup.
