Ok, I know it has tons of glitches and the army dumped the program BUT when it works right this thing kicks some major ass. It reminds me of airwolf and since I always wanted to fly a helicopter I just love this thing. So, now its your turn.

Hey guys, let's make this easy. If you don't like the idea of an electric coolant pump, don't change to it. I researched the idea and went to it.

I don't recall seeing or participating in any discussion in this thread of whether somebody likes the EWP or thinks an individual should switch to it.

For those swimming in the red herring, the issue being discussed was:
Quote:
My opinion is GM should have used an electric WP instead of the mechanical one.

Besides this thread was about flushing the cooling system.

If you only read the title and not the first post, perhaps.

Japanese Camaro? Do tell!

My point was that I was not aware of GM using labor from asian third-world countries as parts suppliers for their American vehicles. Unfortunately after doing some research, it is more and more common as GM forces their suppliers to cut costs. Though I tend to trust Indian goods more than Chinese, but that is probably more of a personal bias than anything.

And trust me, I'm not happy about jobs being offshored. I buy American whenever there is a choice...

I probably will put the rims and tires up for sale as soon as I get set up with the new stuff. The new rims certainly cant use the tires I have so they really should go as a package??? I will let you know as soon as I know about cost and how the new wheels look. If they look like crap the old stuff goes back on.(I really doubt they won't look great).

The starter threads were completely beat to shit. They were forced to 5/16. For me to try to cut them back to 8MM would have fucked them up.

5/16s is .3125 8MM is .314. There is very very little difference. We're talking .002 inches.
Nice language! Also, 5/16" is 7.83750 mm. I agree it isn't much. I mentioned the size in response to "If the holes are already half mangled you can't reduce them back down!". Despite the minuscule difference, re-tapping to 8 mm isn't reducing the size.

LT4 springs are a good bang for the buck. You'll probably pick up a little power up top from not having worn out stock springs.

If it's within the rules get an 0.26 gasket. The Victor Reinz 5898 seems to be the current preferred option there.

If your rocker restriction is stock ratio/any style, then go 1.5 roller. If it is stock stamped then go with an aftermarket stamped 1.5 rocker.

Stiffening up the valvetrain with stiffer pushrods and 7/16 rocker studs can be worth a few HP.

Basically, use the best parts you can within the rules. 2 hp here, 5 hp there, eventually it adds up.

Best place to research LT1 engine upgrades is http://camaroz28.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=9

What the builder charges in labor for a high po build is up to him. I try to get an extra $100-$150 labor above a standard rebuild labor figure. The reason is I spend much more time blueprinting a performance build.

thanks for the clarification.... and for your patience, let me ask one more question.... would it be simpler just to have a tranny built than to upgrade the one that is in the car?

It would be simpler, but much more costly. Vette trans cores are very hard to come by. Finding one is difficult enough. Modding a core to vette specs would be possible, but again, costly.

What's your preference?

I would prefer a USB device that is simply a mass storage device. I wouldn't want any wires running out of the faceplate and connecting to a device I'd have to velcro down visible. I was just thinking of a cable out the back of the HU that would run under the trim to the console where I would mount either a card reader or a tiny HD. So I would need a HU that could control the storage device.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. I guess I have some reading to do.

One thing I have found here is that, for the most part, if someone doesn't know the answer then they don't post an answer. I know my '89 has aftermarket (Monroe, I think) shocks that were on it when I got it, so I have no clue about any kind of shock compared to another. That is why I didn't answer.

Most people here probably do stop in there sometimes, and those who don't, don't care if you do or don't stop in there. Nobody here gets worked up about that. 1/2 the threads on here mention CF or DC or some other forum, and nobody gets upset about it, and I think that is great. How many times have you been there, typing a response, then you think of a website but you can't mention it because of their rules. I can't link anesthes's compression ratio calculator to help a guy out because offlinking is illegal. If the guy asked the question here, the site owner would link the calculator site himself, let alone care if I did. Or I see a guy looking for a part that I saw another guy selling on camaroz28. I can't tell him without getting banned. Yes, they read the PM's too. Wonder how long it will be till they make vader86 take the link to his website out, because when you click on his name the link is still there.

Lots of forums, but only one of them cares if you mention another forum. Very childish.

Some of you LT1 guys might be looking for plugs for your AIR injection ports. The thread size is 22mm x 1.5mm pitch.

For a clean look, you can use 1994-2001 Dodge 5.9L Cummins diesel oil pan drain plug, Napa part number 704-1378. They have a nice 3/8" square drive, making them easy to install and hard to strip.

This information is for archival purposes.

Scwhartzeneggar? Sorry but I had too.
Venetian, Bellagio, Monte Carlo, Caesars, if you don't stay at one of them you should at the very least visit. Phantom of the Opera, The Producers, Circu du Solei LOVE, catch one or two of these shows. See the Dam, Lots of gentlemen's clubs Cheetas, Olympic Gardens etc. Average minimum bets on the strip are $15.00 Craps, Roullette, Blackjack. Go "Down Town" and see the Fremont Street Expierence. Just don't go any further (bad neigborhood)Go see Canyon of Fire & RedRock Canyon.
Oh and the Hookers come out about 2:30 A.M. in a lounge near you, you don't have to indulge, but they sure are fun to hang out with.

The ARP intake bolts won't hurt anything. But given the low torque specs for the intake, they are really not needed. I use stainless bolts for mine just because they stay looking better than standard steel bolts. Your stock pushrods are fine, unless you need a length change for geometry purposes, which is unlikely in your case. I'm still running stock LT1 pushrods with a fairly modified stroker that includes Comp Cams beehive springs, 1.6 RRs, oversize valves, Hotcam, etc.
Get some ARP head bolts. These are far superior to stock and will retain their clamping force much better than stock replacements. And they don't have to be replaced every time you pull the heads. The LT4 springs are very inexpensive and a good idea. They're better than stock and plus they'll be fresh. You can buy the LT4 retainers too, but you don't need them. The LT1 retainers will work fine with them.

Sorry that wasn't clear, I can't change the cam either.

Not expecting to find anything wrong with the push rods, just wondering if they were a "wear" item that I should replace while I have it apart.

Why did you compound the problem by re-tapping the holes to 5/16" when you already knew they were supposed to be 8 mm? It seems you have perpetuated the work of a hack. I wonder what the next guy that gets it, or the guy after him, will say about your work?

RACE ON!!!

Here's why.

The starter threads were completely beat up pretty good. They were forced to 5/16. For me to try to cut them back to 8MM would have screwed them up more since I couldn't get them started correctly.

5/16s is .3125 8MM is .314. There is very very little difference. We're talking .002 inches.

I chose 5/16 because EVERY SINGLE OTHER HOLE ON THE DAM MANIFOLD is SAE, not metric. Why Accel would use metric in this one case, make no sense to me.

Also, I had the dam tap.

It works, it fits, the threads are new and clean. The bolts fit snugly, it's not an issue.

Why do you have an issue with it? Again we're talking .002 inches.

I was ready to take the manifold off and bring it to a machine shop to do it "right". I used the 5/16. If it worked I'm home free. If it didn't no harm no foul. It wasn't going to get any worse.

Why would it matter anyway? It's the bolts that hold the runners to the manifold....this application it makes no difference.

I guess you'd have to have been there. The 8 mm tap may have corrected the problem. I don't know if there is a different convention for measuring English thread sizes and metric threads, but 8 mm is larger than 5/16".

"If the holes are already half mangled you can't reduce them back down to 8mm!" Otherwise, what he did was reduce them back down below 8 mm, to 5/16"

I said "Americas" on purpose... That includes Canada, Mexico, etc.

What bothers me is that these offshore factories go through the trouble of making a part, but it doesn't meet the original specification. Anyway, it is a sign of the times and not much will be done about it until it gets so bad these companies start loosing major business.

I talked to Merle at Exotic Muscle and he mentioned that he vaguely recalled hearing someone having to grind on their motor mount to make it fit.

Last news I heard was they were to start filming in east San Diego county.

But this was postponed when the Witch fire burned up the entire countryside in October.

Got my ALDL cable (now what?) Program suggestions?

So I got me a shiny new ALDL cable for my laptop/Vette and I got it working with some cheapo freeware program. So that's cool. But now since I know it works, what kind of programs are out there that will read the information this thing is putting out?

Can I make changes to certain things (such as rev limiter or fuel cutoff) or would I need something more sophisticated for that?

Thanks to anyone who's used anything like this.

Now if I were to say something negative about C4Guru (like how come no one here respnded to my request for feedback on Bilstein options) do I get banned here?

Go for it! I've done nothing but insult Andy, and he made me a moderator!

As far as the tech, obviously you're not going to get the quantity of responses as you'll get elsewhere (yet), but hopefully they'll meet/exceed in accuracy. I'd answer your question but I'm still on my original, 23 year old Bilsteins!

And forum feedback is always welcome, there's an entire section dedicated to it. I see lots of room for improvement here and am also commiserating with the powers that be.

The gaskets you bought are fine. Is there any special reason you ask about the push rods? Do you suspect damage that normally doesn't coincide with a blown head gasket? Also the cam. You race under rules that won't allow a change in the rocker arm ratio, but they will allow an after market camshaft? That seems strange.

RACE ON!!!

I am being held prisoner against my will inside Andy's garage. He said if I stay on good behavior he'll let me out for an hour. But if I go beyond the property line, this neck implant will send 10,000 volts to my spinal cord.

Can someone bring me a candy bar or something? I see daylight under the right side of the garage door, you could swing by at night or something. Watch out for the rottweilers.

If the holes are already half mangled you can't reduce them back down!

I would've done the same.

I'm considering trying my hand at paint work. I currently have a 5.5cfm(@90psi) 26gal compressor.

From what I've read so far, this is sort of small to be doing big paint jobs, but I'm patient and would rather screw it up myself than pay others to screw it up.

I want to start on some small stuff, like my truck interior, small metal parts, etc. Eventually I want to repaint my entire vette and my truck.

What sort of equipment do you recommend? Air dryer? What gun? Any particulars on type of paint? What about tools for stripping the paint down? Mask? Exhaust fan needed? Where do you buy your stuff from?

I have a single car garage to work in that I can seal up with plastic, and I don't mind doing lots of disassembly and painting a little at a time. I'm not looking for showroom paint, I just want something that looks good from 10 feet and doesn't peel off. I've seen the finishes at the budget paint shops around here and I'm sure I can do better than those.
