Yeah I know big F'in whoop!

Well my thought was to make this box available to those who are having trouble with their 86-89 ABS unit.

Just a passing thought for those whom might be interested.

Sweet!

This almost gives me an idea...

I wonder if we could pool resources and get a Tech II? Then ship it about as needed?

Only requirement is a minimum post count...

Thoughts?

Yep. Sounds good. The only thing you would need is some accountability or reliability. Too many people would just help themselves to the "free" offerings.

Congrats on the purchase! I bought one a while back to have for diagnostic testing, too. I've even used it already on another member's car. Still haven't needed it on mine. Did you buy the J-35592 Pinout Box with it? I still need to pick that up.

These are (were) expensive tools. You don't want it lost or broken in shipping, or sitting in some random person's garage for 8 months when you need it.

How about a Guru Paypal account, like an escrow account. You deposit a set amount via the Paypal. It sits pending until you're done and send it back, in which case Andy refuses the payment. No percentage taken, no harm, no foul. Then that way if something happens and the unit isn't returned, the payment is accepted to cover the loss.

Durango_Boy this could work.

My twist on it would be to not burden Andy.

AutoZone rents out their tools for free, cept your CC is credited the cost of the tool until returned. The box is worth quite a bit so, what would you consider to be a fair deposit?

You'd have to account for shipping too. Maybe a ZIP to ZIP USPS cost added to the deposit to cover the shipping both ways?

I think a fair price would be a percentage of the price you paid. Like maybe if you were going to sell it again to someone else, you wouldn't be able to get what you paid...but a percentage less.

So, take what you paid, knock off 5% - 10% and call that the deposit. Maybe in that ballpark?

I am expecting a good Tech II, with all cables, will cost about $2500.

If the 25 or so CORE members that all participate regularly were to pitch in $100, we could buy it.

Since everyone thinks I am moderately trustworthy, I could be the keeper of it.

Shipping... it's not that big, if we used USPS Flat Rate box, I think the tech II and all cables could be sent for as little as $12.00. International higher.

If one of the 25 wants to use it, simple shipping charge.

If one OUTSIDE wants to use it, then there is an option... $100 to be a part owner, OR, $500 refundable deposit, plus a CC #. Reason for the CC#? If it gets lost/stolen/broken/whatever, we have a CC to get our total back on. Not perfect, but not bad. And with the money spread out, our individual risk is lower.

Part owners would need to share the CC, too... for the same reason, just no deposit.

The new owners $100 will go towards maintaining and upgrading the Tech II. New cables or adapters as needed. As caretaker, I would hold that money. A spreadsheet would be attached to a thread with info on all owners - not detailed, I would keep all confidential info. All owners would have contact info for all owners, CC info would be mine and mine alone.

That same thread would hold the queue of who has it now. The tool is powerful... as such, I would like to see usage limited to 1 week at a time - PLAN AHEAD!

100% transparency. Totally public at all times. The only confidential parts will be our personal names, address and financials. To reiterate, I would keep CC#s, no one else.

If we ever wish to get out, we sell the package and split the $$ equally.

BUT! There is a but. Whoever participates must have a minimum post count. I am thinking 500.

When someone is done with it, they put it back into the old box, or, get a new one from the USPS, and ship it to the next person or back to me. I don't want it sitting on a third parties garage for ever.

The next question... do we want to check into the latest Tech IV instead?

second, it was a suggested figure. One that shows commitment to the Guru. Would you want some anonymous user with 10 posts borrowing it?

Perhaps on a person by person thing... I mean, Mr Mojo isn't a threat... Rex Ruby isn't a threat...

What can a tech 2 really do for you? I am serious, what does it do that a good datalogger, code reader can do for you. Flame suit is ON!

They are really good for diagnosing much more than the engine. Its much more precise for pinpointing. If you get an O2 code they can tell you if it is the heater element or the O2 itself. This saved me from buying a new O2, when it was a bad connection to the heater. I have access to one at the dealership, and it saves a lot of time.

What about updates for it?

Got it! That was my first concern that someone would come along and take it for themselves if the deposit was worth the gamble. A good current post count and someone who knows the person would be a big help for sure.

I would buy by committee... everyone with their $100 in would have sway on which we bid on.

Perhaps someone knows vendor X or whatnot.

I would be wrong to just go into to solo with the monies of others on the line.

Almost every every code diagnosis chart says to plug in the Tech 1/2 turn this on (with the Tech) read this voltage, etc. Without it you can't send commands to the ECM/CCM to do the diagnosis.
A datalogger's fine but only lets you change parameters, it won't turn components on and off.
A code reader's fine but a code only tells you that a bunch of different components could be causing the problem.

Been looking on Google and others without success. If you could just scan it into PDF's or whatever, that would be the easy way. Otherwise I'll cover the printing/shipping/your time costs.

The box WORKS!!!!

Now from what I gather, it tests the pump/chassis side of the system.
When the manual arrives we'll see if it can read the ABS brain.

No, it can not read the ABS brain. You have to have a Tech 1 with the correct cartridge. As you are disconnecting the brain when hooking the 35890 up.

The 35890 just tests the ABS side of the functions.

Just as a added note. Bosch abs2 has no off board troubleshooting through the adl on the 86-89 cars. Faults can not be downloaded from the abs computer on these abs2 cars. The j35890 and pin out box are the only tools available to troubleshoot this system. Off board fault troubleshooting functionality came out with the abs2S first available on the 90 cars. Which is accessed with the tech1 and other scanners with abs functionality. If you can find one, Pick up the Gm product service training book #15005.01-1 Corvette antilock brakes abs. It includes the kent moore j35890 instructions and alot of other nice info to have to help troubleshoot this system. This book is pictured below.

Welcome to the site. I'll have to look later at the manual and see what I can find.

What exactly are you looking for? Please understand that the J-35592 is actually a separate diagnostic testing tool outside of the J-35890. The procedures for using both on the Corvette ABS are outlined in the factory service manual electrical diagnosis section 8A-44-10. The only pinout I can tell you is from the FSM. It is used when testing the wheel sensors for resistance.

With the J-35592 connected, the resistance values should read 900-1500 ohms when tested between 4-6 (left front), 11-21 (right front), 9-8 (left rear), 24-26 (right rear).

There is a diagram in the FSM that lists each circuit on the controller (with an associated number) for the modulator valve, I'm not sure if each number corresponds with the connector output without physically inspecting the controller.

Hope that helps,

Matthew

Matthew, Thank you for your information. I have the ABS tester with it's Manual. The manual has picture of the J35892 connector harness. The tester arrived without the connector harness. So, I need a way to get the tester to talk to the modulator. According to the manual the tester cycles the modulator pump motor and will use the modulator to cycle each wheel solenoid to stop the rotating wheel. Should there be a J35892 cable housing available I would like to purchase it. If there is a drawing showing the wire routing or pin out I would like to purchase it.
Any help would be appreciated.
Best Regards,
Gary Newlon

Wow if you don't have the connector that is gonna be tough. I will photograph the fsm page with the numbers associated with each circuit pin when I get a chance and see what else I can dig up.

OP best of luck

be nice to be able to rent (that should keep people honest) tools that are either too pricey or hard to find.

Gary, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I think you got screwed with the ABS tester with no cable. I looked at mine, it is not marked in any way what pin corresponds with what. One end has a round plug with pins, the other has a flat plug with blade style contacts. Using the pinout box you might be able to figure out which flat bladed connector is associated with each circuit on the abs modulator itself, but that won't help you with the Kent-Moore box. I took some pictures but they haven't loaded from my phone yet. Once they load I'll post them so you can see what I mean.

You might be able to contact Kent-Moore, but I highly doubt a 20 year old cable is still available.

Here is what the plug looks like as well as a shot of the pinout box. The cord is not marked with any numbers. If you had the pinout box, you could ohm each wire for connector position, but that still wouldn't help you too much.

Matthew,
Thank you so much for taking the time to get this information back to me. I can probably get my hands on the parts to fabricate the cable. Which wire goes where is the problem. You're probably correct with the being had part. My 87 Corvette's ABS system functions properly. I just would like to have one to test the system with.
Respectfully,
Gary Newlon

Here's a setup on ebay with a low starting bid, can't say what it will go for if you're interested in having a working box:
