I am conteplating buying a 90 vette . the car has been sitting for 5 months . The owner says the car doesn't start due to clogged injectors , and A the AC needs a new relay
the rest of the car looks like it is in decent shape and not abused . the owner wants $ 3,500.00. the problems he has mentioned seem like common problems whith these cars.
but I would like some input from people that know these cars , This would be my first vette . I know the owner through work and don't think he would lie to me about the situation with the car , Thank you all.

No way I would pay that much for a car that doesn't run. Tell him to put in a set of injectors and get it running and you will pay the 3500 plus the price of the injectors.

That will tell you if he is lying or not. You can't trust anyone but your mother in these deals.

Price is nice, questionable if it's the injectors without doing more troubleshooting like fuel or spark. Easy enough to deternmine. The A/C issue is secondary. First you have to make sure she'll run. Might be worth your while to have a good mechanic look it over before you commit. How many miles on the motor? Manual or automatic? If it is the injectors we have a resource on this forum that will be a hell of a lot cheaper than buying dealer or parts store replacements. Plus there is plenty of how to info on both the forum and the FIC website. I'm sure a few others will chime in with more technical expertise. Good luck and I hope it works out for you.

How many miles on the car? Stick/auto, coupe/convertible, overall condition? The price is good IF those are the only issue, injectors are common, A/C I have been without in my '91 for over a year and I paid way more than you did :-)

I bought my 1985 vette and was told it was running when parked but it didnt have a battery and no fuel and needed a new dizzy. Way over paid and when I got into it I found out why. Had a hole in a piston. I was screwed and the seller disappeared

In my opinion buying a car that doesn't run, even if it's "only from injectors" is like buying a car that needs a total engine overhaul. Keep that in mind. You have no way of testing it out to find out otherwise. As far as the a/c - same thing. A relay is $15. If the guy can't put that in, what is he hiding?

Both of his statements seem odd. It would be unusual to have clogged injectors unless he by-passed the filter and poured crud in the tank - what are the chances of that? And a bad relay keeping the AC from working - again very doubtful. Check KBB for private sale value and then subtract about $1500 and you might have a fair value.

The relay I'm not so sure about, that's a real easy fix, if the AC is an issue to you; or you can use it for bargaining leverage.

My son's Firebird would not start due to clogged injectors, the car sat for many months and they got gummed up/clogged with varnish etc.

Still, buying a non-running car is worrisome...I would pass.

It can be a good deal but it is strongly a buyer beware. People buy cars all the time at good prices because they need minor fixes. Then too, you have the nightmare cases. You are not going to find a cherry C4 for $3500 unless it's got a dead pig smell in it.

OK , Miles are around 100,000 . The guy I know and he was sick in the hospital for a while and his health has not been well , this is the reason he let the car sit and has no intention on doing any work on it. I will take your advice and get the car in a running state before I comit .
He did say if he bypasses the AC relay it will come on . This too I will check out before I comit to a sale . Living in Florida no way to go without AC . the car is a coupe with an automatic . you are all correct that more investigation is required . Thank you.

Most common reason. If that's the case, there's a leak somewhere.

Could be a slow leak. Systems do need a boost now and then. Nothing that a little dye can't detect if it's a leak. Maybe just a refill with some leak sealant could do the trick. I'm forever the optimist. If what was stated was all that was wrong he could get out for under $500. A working and drivable C4 for 4 grand is deal in my book as long as it isn't loaded with little stuff that needs repair like seat covers, weather stripping, tires, battery, window motors, etc. Is the infl rest light and seat belt light on. Common problem with the 90 air bag system frame sensors.

Also make sure the transmission works! The 700R4 is a mess and is well known to blow anything past 75k miles.

Do this... good faith aspect. If he coughs up the injectors, you get it running and it moves, you WILL buy it for the price mentioned and the cost of the injectors. Hell, that means you just got a running Vette for under $4k. The AC? Yea, well, that should be an easy fix.

The reason I make this suggestion, if you like the car, and he is being right with you, then new injectors seem like a cheap price to pay for confirming is diagnosis.

I wonder how injectors would gum, tho, in only 5 months of storage.

Have you tried to start the car? Does it crank?

Also, if it cranks, does it sound REALLY fast? If there is no compression, really fast cranks will result. Less load on the starter.

Well...Let's see
I have a '94 with 156,000 miles on it and it won't run, needs engine and transmission rebuilt. You would have to come up with a lot more than $4500 to tow it away from here.

If the body and interior are in good shape, and you can do your own mechanical work, then take whatever book value you believe in for that car, and subtract $1k to pay for a junkyard engine and transmission if needed.

If it needs anything body/interior related, look for a better car.

The injectors that GM used for the 1990's were not very good. You can check them by pulling off the clips and checking the ohms across the pins. If it's less than 16 then the injector is bad. My 90 only had 4 injectors that ohm'd over 16, most of them were in the 9-11 range.

True, but that test will not tell you if they are clogged...

If they failed due to ethanol or something eating the coil it would. But clogged? No. Sounds fishy. How would he know? Could be anything.

I agree that the a/c is probably low. So you'd need to locate the leak, fix and recharge it.

If the car sat for a long time and won't start, then flushing the gas out and checking the fuel pump would be my first step. The fuel pump can be forced on to drain the tank, The fuel lines to the rail can be drained.

Hello all , This weekend I did the work on the 90 vette.
1. replaced spark plugs 2. replaced injectors 3. changed oil and filter 4. replaced fuel filter 5. removed all old fuel from the tank and lines 6. new pcv valve . it was a long two days in the scorching Florida heat , but I pushed thru and got the job done. the result .... The engine fired
right up and sounds strong, the idle is nice and smooth
After both days I had no time to drive it so today Iwent to see the car after work and took it for a test drive , it drives great for a 1990's car and having 118,000 miles.
so now I have some small repairs , repair the AC , replace
brake pads and rotors , the rest is cosmetic and minor.
first of all I have to make an offer and purchase the car before I put any more work into it.

I have to thank FUEL INJECTOR CONNECTION for a super product
( Bosch III injectors ) the supplied instructions were perfect , and the fast speed in shipping out my order.

Thanks to everybodys advice up to this piont ( Im sure I ask for lots more )you have all helped out and it is appreciated.

I'll let you all know how the purchase goes.

OK , The deal is done and the car is in my drive.
I did extensive cleaning this weekend . and it looks great.

now I need to redo the brakes new pads and turn the rotors.
anybody have tips on the best prices for new pads ?
Hawk HPS is what is suggested in other threads . the car isn't going to be used for racing just normal street driving.

Also AC system I have to get that going after the brakes.
the compressor does not click on when the AC is turned on .
Low freon ? or maybe a relay ?

anything will help , Thanks RT

Glad the deal is done.

The first thing you *need* to purchase is a factory service manual. You can check ebay for a used one, or get a reprinted one at helms.com. Seems pricey at first but once you've used it you'll realize you can't do without it!

Hawks are good pads, I personally have a C5 brake upgrade. Best thing I ever did for my car. Figure $400-500 to go that route.

As far as the a/c, most likely low freon. You can jumper the low pressure switch to see if the compressor comes on. If you find that it works and you have low freon, then you have to track down the leak otherwise you will be wasting your money on converting and refilling it. If there is no physical damage to the a/c components, a common issue is a leaking schrader valve.

He will probably need to check and see if the system is still running on the old R12 Freon or was ever converted to the newer R134...

Congrats on the purchase. Lets see some pics.

My suggestion would be if it is R12 is to keep it R12. Find the problem and fix it. R12 blows colder than 134. Your car do what you want. Mine had a bad compresser and it was cheaper to replace the compressor and recharge with R12 than convert it over.

but the system was more basic the vette, it has more sensors in the freon line and I have the computerized climate control system. I will check the freon (r-12 im sure). It could be a relay also .

on another note I am not read to upgrade to the C-5 brakes,
I just want to get the brakes safe for now . Suggestions ?

It feels great to have the car here , and I'm not the type to want attention but my neighbors are really looking to see what is up with the new car in the drive. after all it has been suv's for as long as we have lived here.

Thanks, RT

Make sure you replace the brake fluid when you do your brakes. My brakes did not work well on my 90, the pads and rotors looked good. I then changed out the old (probably stock) fluid and it made a big difference.

Yep definitely flush out all the old fluid. You will probably hear arguments on this one, but you're just going to be driving the 'Vette sanely, you can use use standard rotors and pads, otherwise you'll want to go to something like Hawk pads.

I went with the hawk pads , I installed new rotors on the front , I haven't had time yet to do the rears but will probably just get new rotors for the rears also, I couldn't get the bleeder to loosen up from the caliper to bleed the system so I took out as much fluid as possible out of the master. I will have a shop look at the bleeders and have them exchange the fluid ( I was afraid that I might just snap off the bleeder , and that would just put me in a bad situation at this time ). any how the new brakes work great the stopping power is perfect with just the fronts done . I can't wait to do the rears. RT

Robert - I'm glad this turned out to be a happy story! Sounds like you got a great car that you will love to drive and wrench on when it needs it. Also consider how inexpensively you just bought into a truly great performance handling car. Lots of guys are using these C4 cars every day for track cars and autocross because they are such great foundations for racing. Welcome to the fun!

I'm with Don. Sounds like you did just fine. It helps that you want to do some of it yourself. Feel free to post any questions you might have in the C4 Technical Section. I bought HAWK HPS for my 91. I believe I may have bought them from Summit. Keep us informed on your progress.

Rear brakes are done . now the car stopps like it should.
and the e-brake works too.

now a question . My tack does not work . when I start the car it flys all the way up to max and then as soon as the car starts it drops to zero . Has anybody had this problem ?
is there a known fix ?

Thanks

If you can locate the tach filter attached to the distributor you can bypass or replace it, that's a start. It's a little silver canister looking thing that is about 1 1/2 inches long and 1/4 inch in diameter with a wire coming out each end. Check the c4 technical section for a recent thread about it.

Thanks , I did check the tech tread and found out much more info. I just didn't know the location . I will try to bypass it and see what happens.

Robert, feel free to post a new thread with each problem. That way guys will be more willing to click on a new thread and help you, and it will be easier to search in the future.
