Please no arguments about which is best, just what floats your boat and why, if you want to elaborate. First, since I've been a hot rod nut for as long as I can remember, I've always enjoyed drag racing. But I must admit I found it much more interesting years ago when the cars were much more diverse. I'd rather go to one nostalgia show than a whole season of modern pro drag racing. Give me the gassers, the fuel altereds, A/FX cars, early super stockers and "rail jobs."
Also stock cars and anything else that runs in a circle. Sprint cars, supermodifieds and the Indianapolis 500, still and always the greatest race in the world, no matter what, IMO. But what wouldn't I give to have seen it anytime from the early 60s on back, when "the big cars" were king. Watson roadsters, Offenhauser power, you know. I didn't get to see the race live until 1968, the beginning of the long Unser dynasty.
And although Nascar is the only professional sport I follow closely, I'm happier at a great short track show with ultra-competitive racing. Where the drivers are only known to the locals but are heroes just the same.
Good God, the racing I've seen on tracks no one's ever heard of. Shady Bowl Speedway in DeGraff Ohio, the best stock car racing I've ever seen, week in and week out back in the early and mid 80s. Sandusky speedway, also in Ohio, also good stock car racing but even better, supermodifieds! These cars were the most balls to the wall cars to ever bolt on a set of pavement rubber. So damned fast you'd swear they had to be on a tether. Fuel injected big blocks, lots of rubber, wings, a driver and little more. And sprint cars, the ultimate show on dirt. Fremont Speedway in Ohio (where I regularly raced my stock car way back when), the Famous Eldora Speedway, Wayne County Speedway, Lima Land (a 1/4 high banked dirt bull-ring where I also raced a few times) and many others I'm sure that I could recall. If you ever have a chance to catch a sprint car show live, DO IT! And their little brothers the midgets, no less impressive but more rare. Mainly they run in touring circuits only these days, such as USAC. Sprints and midgets also run on pavement in USAC and other series and can put on a helluva show there too.
Anyhow, that's my rant although I've seen and appreciate many other types of racing too. I saw the Trans-Am series early on at Mid-Ohio in '67-'68, etc. I saw Mario win an Indy car race there in '84, I believe. Mario was my boyhood hero. Back in the early to mid 60s, he won USAC sprint and midget championships before moving up to Indy cars.
I went to a vintage racing weekend at VIR a few years ago. All of the great sports cars that I remember from way back. That was damn cool.
Someday I'm going to get to the Bonneville salt flats. Without a doubt, the purest form of hot rod racing left.

Karts are great fun. We had one for awhile when my son was still a boy. I have a lot of room in a large side lot and we had a blast sliding that thing around. 35 MPH in a kart feels like 120 in a car!
Shift karts, as I think they're called and you mentioned are a high level of kart racing. Many great racers got their start in karts and it's more common today than ever. Ricky Rudd, now retired Nascar driver comes to mind. He was a as tough as nails son of a bitch..

I prefer racing that is not in a straight line and racing that does not go around in circles. So that mean I enjoy rally, F1, and sportscars (like ALMS). I also like watching the other various off road events like Baja and Taupo, and Dakar (if it were on this year). I'd love to try all of it myself, but don't know enough about cars if I were to get stranded.

However, because so many of these drivers are now turning to NASCAR, I can't but help watch the likes of JP and see how he fares in his second year, as well as being a Tony Stewart fan.

F1... ALMS... Aussie Super Cars! DTM...

In general, road racing.

Yes, they are called Shifter Carts, and just about every driver in F1 came from carts. It's the ultimate training ground.

Drag racing was my first love and remains so today, but feel it has lost something by becoming so professional. Even so called "sportsman" racers tour the country with sponsored backing. Fortunately the average guy can still have fun at the local track without breaking the bank.
I enjoy Nascar racing as well, however I am not a fan of the road course events. It takes some time to appreciate the nuances of race strategy that come into play, and of course the cars have nothing in common with "stock" cars anymore. I suppose the illusion at least of rivalry between manufacturers contributes to my enjoyment of the drags and stock cars.
Most open wheel racing has little appeal for me probably because I can't relate to the vehicles, but everyone should see the Indy 500 at least once, like the Daytona 500 and US National Drags it is something that must be experienced first hand to appreciate.
I've been to Sebring and some other road course events but just never got the bug, not sure why, all just a matter of personal taste, to each his own.

I went to the Formula 1 in Melbourne back in 2001, the last year for Murry "The Voice of Formula 1" Walker as king of the comentators (and not only is he in ultra good shape for a man of his age, no one could ever make watching that sport what it was the way he did)

Seeing the F1 cars in the flesh was great, the sound of them is incredible, and in the whole 4 days i was at the event, the most exciting part of it was definately the comparison races, single lap race with a 5 series BMW, an Australian V8 Supercar, and the BMW Williams F1 car of 2001.

The cars were incredible fast, but until you watch the comparsion in the flesh, you just dont see how fast they really are.

Here are some vids of comparisons:

Our Indy or "Champ" cars are similar Case, on the oval they are almost too fast to enjoy, they pass as a blur. I will agree the sound of engines at those incredible RPM's is amazing!

Yep, ive seen the indi cars at the Gold Coast, which is only abit over 30 minutes away from where i collected and droped you off at the airport. The indi cars are not as loud as the F1s, they were pretty quick but it was different watching them.

I feel almost the same as notorious
with the exception of open wheel cars.
Not much of a fan of those except the
Outlaw sprints, those are wild.
I also agree about the nostalgia drags
over a national event anyday. NASCAR
is at the top of my list but I also saw some
fantastic racing on one particular track here
in Illinois. It was in a tiny town called Mazon
and it was a super-high banked asphalt 1/4 mile
oval. Those late models would FLY.
They shut the track down because they wanted
to sell beer and Mazon was a dry town.
Bastet44, I'm also a Tony Stewart fan.

NASCAR all the way for me. Wife and I go to 6 races a year and camp for a week at every one of them. Camp at the track or within walking distance so we can stay 3/4 drunk the whole weekend. It is a great time. Would LOVE to catch the NASCAR drivers at Eldora but can't this year. I prefer short tracks, and of course Dover, the 1 mile short track!! The fun to be had while camping at Dover is unbelieveable. I'm going to enjoy the flashlight drags this year with the vette and maybe go to Beaver Springs once or twice, but as far as a spectator I'm a NASCAR guy. (As a side note, I do wish they would allow 3 or 4 different tire compound choices to allow a guy to choose soft or hard or something in between, and I wish they would put on rain tires and run in the rain to make it more interesting)

If I'm not behind the wheel, then i'd rather be watching WRC (rally). I also like Nascar because I can sleep through most of the race and wake up for the end.

They also have a CORR series down here (stadium trucks) which is pretty damn exciting.

I want to head down to one of their events and also check out some NHRA at Pomona.

I might have to get Sirius just so I can hear that. Count me in as another of Tony's fans. He's one of the few drivers left cut from the old mold. Not too squeaky-clean, not afraid to say or show what he's feeling. And as much natural talent as any of the all-time great racing drivers down through the years have had. It's an extra something that only a few at any given time possess. Drivers like Juan Manuel Fangio, A.J. Foyt, David Pearson, Dale Earnhardt, Bill Vukovich, Mario Andretti, Michael Schumacher and many more were such drivers. You either have it or you don't and most don't, even among the well known.
