I have one and was just wondering. And we're not talking some little tuna-can sized can but a community-sized, 50 oz. can of boned chicken. Obviously a substantial financial investment at some time in my hazy, forgotten past. To clarify, although I'm a sometimes desperate (for food) bachelor, I'm not a complete imbecile. If I were to open this can, and the smell were so bad that doing deep-breathing exercises at the city dump would be a relief, I would in most likely-hood not consume it. But if it looks and smells alright, would you eat it? Just wondering. I've been contemplating this issue ever since discovering it in the back of a cupboard 2 or 3 years ago. So whadaya think, no guts, no glory? Am I just outa' my mind with a serious case of the munchies? What says you?

Many years ago, in the army, we used to eat and smoke from C or K rations that seemed as old as we were.

Put it on e-bay. I have a can of Spam from 1983 in my filing cabinet. It began bulging out about 5 years ago and leaks a little. I once kept a bowl of ice-cream in my freezer for almost 15 years. It doesn't take much to amuse me.

But then again I've had bubble guts for weeks on end too. Just the price one pays for overseas gigs with foreign forces.

I know one thing for sure. I wouldn't want to be in the same room with you when the gas kicks in. There is a good chance you will have some lumps with the gas as well. The chicken might not smell bad going in but that will change when it comes out!

Is the can swelled up, did it "pop" when you opened it? If not, eat it. I'll bet it won't taste any worse than ham and lima beans c-rats. And it damn sure won't be any harder on you.

I've eaten SEVERAL c-rats from the late 40s and early 50s back in 70's. Either that or worms and other indigious stuff that smelled and looked a lot worse. If the can don't poff when the p-38 first cracks it open, it'll do.

Now they put some tabasco sause in the mre's to cover up the taste. Hell, one time I ate some long rats that where about 10 years old, they'd been in my jeep tool compartment for 3 or 4 years and didn't have any holes in the bag. Way past the date on the package.

Chris,

Are you going to eat the chicken?

You could always send it here, I'm sure I could get a some boatguys and frogs to partake in that science experiment with me. Shoot if the timing is right, I have a couple of Army SF buddies coming down soon and I'll may be able to get them to indulge in a tasty canned feast.

LOL

happy easter

Ordinarily, I'd say no, don't eat it. However, an acquaintance of mine who is somewhat of a bon vivant and poultry connoisseur, disagreed. He said 1990 was an excellent year for canned chicken unlike the late 80s varieties which tended to be a bit on the dry side or the other early 90s vintages which had a somewhat smoky bouquet. He said while eating it now would be a satisfying experience, best to hold on to it as he feels that once the precious metals craze has run its course, a dramatic increase in the value of older canned meats is inevitable...
