There is nothing there that a nice set of spinners, a wing and an oversized fart can can't fix. The back looks just big enough for a nice big boom box. When are you ready to start the mods? And don't put those other wings on it either.

I was just tooling around Craigslist as I do ofeten and stumbled on this 383 for sale. I don't know much about them and this might be a awful deal or might not even work for our cars, but figured I'd post it here incase some-one had interest in it.

http://burlington.craigslist.org/pts/614060843.html

I'll be interested to hear your thoughts on it.

It won't be just the same, it'll be way slower.

Not on its own.

Quote:

There is no such thing a PURE water but we can get close. Water itself, Pure H2O is NOT conductive.

Even theoretically pure water is slightly conductive. Every single substance known to man is conductive.

Quote:

This contaminate along with the 12v DC charge from your electrical system (remember? We use the block for Grounding that system?) starts a process called Electrolysis.

The DC charge in the coolant from the electrical system is infinitesimal, if even measureable at all, it is nowhere near 12V. To say there's a voltage there would be like saying you've got a voltage difference between one end of the engine block and the other.

There will be a measurable DC voltage if there's galvanic corrosion occuring, whether or not there's a 12V system in operation. In fact, dissolved ions in the coolant would decrease whatever electrical system induced voltage (if any) might occur. High conductivity = lower voltage, remember?

Quote:

The Trouble starts with, what will be dissolved?? Softer metals will be first and fastest. All steel coolant systems from the past never had a problem with Tap water. But as we all know, we are now using a lot of aluminum here and there. My '84 has steel heads and Block but the later GM V8s moved to an aluminum block. LT series and the Norstar Motors to name a couple. Mine has aluminum in the radiator and Heater core. (Ever wonder why we have so many problems with that heater core leaking??? I don't.) Read what GM recommends for motors with Aluminum Polypropylene Glycol and not Ethylene Glycol. There is a reason for that.

My understanding is PG is superior to EG, except in cost and freeze point. It will provide the same benefit to any cooling system, aluminum or not. In fact, all-aluminum engines will corrode SLOWER than ferrous metals. Put both metals outside in the rain or salt water and see what corrodes faster.

Also I'm pretty sure your heater core is brass, every other car I've changed one one had brass.

Quote:

I'll leave this discussion with one memory. Ever wonder why they sell Distilled water at the grocery store? Did you ever see your Mom with a jug of distilled water?? Ever see her put it in the Iron? Let's add that mystery up.

Iron, Electricity, water.......what could it all mean?

It means you're completely off in left field. Distilled water is used because of it's mineral purity. Irons produce steam. As the water boils off, you're left with a higher and higher concentration of minerals and precipitates. These will foul up your iron in no time and stain your clothes. (Read up on "cycles of concentration"). Now I haven't taken my iron apart, but I'm pretty sure the iron face is aluminum, for its good thermal conductivity. I don't know what the electric heating element is made of, but either way I doubt they'd put any dissimilar metals in contact inside there to cause galvanic corrosion.

Your turn!

There's 3 different things going on here, don't confuse them.

RUST - oxygenated water corroding metals
GALVANIC CORROSION - dissimilar metals in contact in water)
ACIDIC WATER - pure water dissolving metals

RUST occurs extremely slow in 100% pure water because of its extremely low conductivity and lack of free oxygen. The pure water molecules must be reduced down to H2+ and O3- before the iron can oxidize, and these reactions need electrical conductivity to occur. In tap water, you have dissolved oxygen ions which readily corrodes the iron. You also have dissolved hydroxides and dissolved metals in there, like sodium, calcium, magnesium that increase its conductivity, which speeds up the corrosion process. The steel and cast iron will corrode much faster than aluminum.

GALVANIC CORROSION. The high conductivity increases the rate of galvanic corrosion, ONLY IF there are dissimilar metals in direct contact with each other and the electrolyte (coolant). This occurs where the alum heads meet the iron block, or where the iron heads meet the alum intake, depending on year. The contact is made through the head gasket and bolts, or at the intake through just the bolts. (If the intake bolts on a 84-85 car were insulated from the intake with plastic sleeves, no galvanic corrosion would occur there.)

ACIDIC WATER, mostly distilled water, has a low pH and will slowly dissolve almost anything it touches until the pH becomes neutral. This is why it's usually stored in plastic or glass or tin.

I've disabled the CAGS code in TunerCAT, but I'm still getting code 84. WTH?

Anything special I need to mess with besides unchecking the ECM switch?

I noticed I'm using a really old definition file, and I can't find the one I actually paid for, and TC has changed the password on the latest files, so I'm waiting on that for now.

Har! Happy Easter to you, too ;-)

I don't have much help to offer - I know these things can run hot, but have you checked to make sure your radiator isn't clogged with debris? If it is, blow it out with compressed air from the engine side.

Actually, they were fine around town and in a straight line. It's on the high-speed twisties that they are not up to par. A bad floating feeling. The Bilstein sports are much superior in that aspect.

My industry is off for Good Friday. Ran at the beach this morning and will race on Saturday. It cooled off a bit but still in the low 70's.

Changed a couple fuses, topped off the R34a for summer driving, checked the fluids and cleaned the inside.

I don't buy anything from the TV, that being said, about a year ago, I was watching CNBC and they showed a new product.
"MagicJack". Hadn't seen it until 3:30am one morning, purchased it for $39.95. It pluges into the usb port and a telephone plugs into it. Works off the computers high speed internet and not the phone companys products. Free calls, local and long distance...very interesting product.

This is NOT an ad for www.magicjack.com

Phew, Where oh where to begin.

Distilled water will oxidize (rust) metal just the same....there is oxygen molecules in that H20

Rust and Electrolysis are not the same. Rust particulate will lead to Electrolysis occuring. And this is why the coolant must be flushed after a while.

There is no such thing a PURE water but we can get close. Water itself, Pure H2O is NOT conductive. The particulate floating in the water is conductive.

Once you introduce tap water into the system lots of contaminate (naturally found in water) is introduced as well. This contaminate along with the 12v DC charge from your electrical system (remember? We use the block for Grounding that system?) starts a process called Electrolysis. This is the same process we use in Chrome plating or Electro/chemical etch. Some materials will be dissolved and that dissolved material will be deposited (on the molecular level) somewhere else.

So if you have troubles with things corroding/failing sooner than you expected, you may want to look into what I have written a bit further.

I'm no Corvette expert but I did help launch an Antifreeze recycling service back in the early 90s....I learned way more about Antifreeze and coolant than the average man should ever know. I had to do battle with SCAQMD (the local EPA for those that are not in the SoCal region) State entities for two reasons, one for licensing purposes and then I walked down the hall and sold the fleet managers on the process. I had to battle with municipalities fleet managers. Diesel Trucks have a lot of strict Coolant requirments with the use of Surfactants etc. Diesel Fleet service managers, Local repair shops, Dealerships, GM, Ford on and on....

Luckily I've forgotten enough to carry on as a semi normal Human but certain things stick in the noodle.

Thanks a ton! It was a lot of work over the years, but now it's not bad to maintain. We put a sprinkler system in last year, so my wife (who was our sprinkler system - LMAO) is ecstatic now. We get a lot of people stopping to pay a compliment or ask questions when they walk by, so there's some satisfaction in all the sweat.

My wife owns a landscape company and plant nursery. She does that about 280 days a year. Plenty of people willing to pay not to have to do that. I do lots of it around the house. Just general maintenance though. Working on the cars for me is the never ending project. Save and spend, save and spend. From my experience, it's always cheaper to buy a car in mint condition than buy a fixer upper and let it nickle and dime you. Just like it's usually cheaper to buy someones completed project than do the project yourself. .... I know , I know, Let's not forget the fun and experience factor. I'm working on the parts list now for all the vehicles.

I'm hoping for a mellow weekend. Just reading about all that yardwork makes me tired.

I'm a little perturbed at the moment because my email provider seems to be down. I need to call them to find out what's up.

I feel your pain. Back in '06, I put in 600 feet of paver edging around the house and garden, and built a little retaining wall. It was in the 90's and humid the whole time, and involved a lot of digging and pounding with a dead-blow hammer - projectile sweating was the norm.

And some years back, I put in about 22 tons of rock - ugh!

I did get to drive the Vette last night, and plan to keep it well lubricated during the week, if possible.

My Ruby was a little cranky with me yesterday. Low idle and a new buzzing rattle in the steering column. Neither was present after warmup though. Hopefully I can take a day and do some minor projects I have been meaning to tackle.

A new piece of interior trim at the top inside of the windshield, and replace one of the pot metal sun visor supports.

I have new floormats and a cargo area mat I can put in. A buddy gave me a dash mat, but I don't care for them. Not sure if I will install that or not.

And I got that headliner material from Tobijohn, so I might even attempt to redo the headliner. But we'll see.

vacations are fun... especially when you do absolutely nothing for a week... I kinda wish I knew what that was like.

Our vacation:

March 12 - Fly to Nashville(3p, CDT); Drive to Atlanta for dinner with HS buddy; Stayed in Valdosta, GA (arrived at 12:30a)

March 13 - Lunch with Peace Corps friend of Bastet44; arrived in Sebring, 5:30p; Dinner with friend from Ohio, my brother and his wife, finally home by 10p!

March 14/15 - 12 Hours of Sebring

March 16 - Drive to Nashville, left 9a, arrived, 10:30p (CDT)

March 17 - NCM (did sleep in a bit, tho)

March 18 - Slept in, processed some 400 digital pictures

March 19 - Checked out, did some small errands, airport. Left at 7p CDT arrived in LA at 9:30p, PDT, arrived at home at 10:30p.

March 20 - Back to work...

Gotta run!

This is an on going problem over there. But you know something, it's OVER THERE.

I am getting to be of the mindset where I don't care anymore what happens there. It's their problem, not mine, not ours.

Yes, from what I have heard, there has been a drop in traffic. And yes, from what I have heard, there has been a serious drop in quality.

But after reading that thread a couple of weeks ago, where the writer alluded to "gurus" who only bash CF, I don't really want to see these threads anymore. Perception is a bitch. It really is.

His 67 is an El Camino, not a Vette... he wasn't clear on that! I can see why you made that assessment!

As for the 68, early C3s are coming up in value, but the motor is not numbers matching. 67 and 68 Vettes shared the same power plant lineup... that means a 427 with 390-435 hp.

I would get the VIN and start decoding with the black book. Here is why, if the CAR was once an L88, it's worth a ton of cash, there isn't a lot of them, and even without the OEM motor, the CAR is worth money. It's still rare and a motor can be put in to replace that matches via date codes and such.

Top dollar for a normal 68 BB is about $45~$50k. Somewhere in that neighbourhood. That's top dollar. An L88, IIRC, somewhere about $80k, I will have to check. The ZL1 doesn't really count... there are only 2 and both are accounted for, but expect over $500k.

In short, the 68 is not loved like the 67. And it's current values reflect that. And in the years of $150k 67s, the 68 has not followed suit. So I doubt it will go stupid anytime soon.

If it was me, I would pass.

Considering what you REALLY want out of the car, I would look at selling the Z, getting an SR3 chassis and finding a banged up roadster to build everything around. You would need C4 suspension to bolt up, tho.

We can talk more if you want.

Spring finally gets to N.J.
Still a little cold, but the roads are dry and salt free.
Time to get the 07 out of moth balls and on the road.

Enjoy your vacation.

Steps.

1. Get fish.
2. Capture fish farts.
3. ?????
4. PROFIT!

It was hilarious, last summer when gas went up .30 a gallon, they said it was due to putting in special additives in to keep the gas from evaporating in the heat that were very expensive.

IT WAS 85 ON CHRISTMAS DAY!

Seriously... wtf. That one wasn't even believable.

Have a great vacation!

It is snowing like a madman here, looks like something out of Currier & Ives. So a good weekend to hunker down and get back to work on the car. Valve cover gaskets are next - hope to get the oil leak solved before tackling the headers.
