In 1995 I was the big 4-0. Somehow I had made it through another decade. My body was starting to tell me that I can't keep punishing it as I had for the past 25 years. Went to the Dr for a full check up. Everything actually checked out well much to my wifes and my surprise. But the Dr told me a bit of advice. He said, the body can take a lot of punishment and recover but you can't keep hammering it. If you give it time, it will heal itself. That was his way of telling me it was time to slow down. It was then that he gave a me the nickname cast iron liver. Every year I went back for my annual check up. Every year my counts came back in the normal range though my bp was boderline high and I always looked like I had a sunburn. It had been 3 years since Hurricane Andrew and Homestead was still pretty torn up. Half the population had moved away but the recovery was well on it's way. My wife, being in the landscaping business, had plenty of work. I was in my 15th year at the USPS. My son was a sophomore at Homestead High. And the years passed by ....... Where were you in 1995?

26 years old. An under-employed house-husband in Mifflinburg, PA. I'd graduated with my BA in Film and Video from Penn State the previous summer. I had a semi-full time job for awhile doing wedding videos. I guess you could say I've suffered for my art...
I used to take my '88 Honda CRX Si with my daughter and our dirty laundry for an hours drive to my grandmother's house so I could wash clothes for free. My grandmother was more than happy to spend time with my only child (at the time). I miss my grandmother. She passed years ago. I miss my daughter too. She's too busy being a college student to talk to me now. Come to think of it, I miss that CRX too! Barbados Yellow. Quick little bugger. |

I also turned 40 in 1995. That birthday didn't bother me nearly as much as the one that came a decade later. Life was pretty good. My oldest son was just beginning his teens, so it was still OK to be seen with Mom and Dad.

1995 was a very eventful year for me.
In March 95, I graduated Marine Corps Boot Camp, Parris Island SC. After 10 days leave I reported to the School Of Infantry, Camp Geiger NC. Upon completion I was living the good life stationed just down the road at Camp Lejeune, NC and spent the rest of 1995 (till Feb 96) on deployment to Guantanamo Bay Cuba (Operation Sea Signal JTF 160), picking Hatian "refugees" out of the water and keeping them under control in the camp until we could process them. It was good times. Will |

In '95 I was another one that turned 40. For my birthday I got bi-focals. My son was born and my mom was found to have an in-operable brain tumor.

In '95 I was a junior in high school. I was dating a few cheerleaders, playing football as a middle and outside linebacker, hanging out with friends, driving was new for me, and I was playing a LOT of video games. I was a jock AND a cool geek.

Well, I turned 40 as well. My mid-life crisis happened that summer.....I got my left ear pierced. When I came back to school it shocked everyone...."that a male teacher would get his ear pierced was just blasphemy." Little did I know that the school board was plotting diabolical deeds to get back at me. They made my life hell through that school year, but in the end I won out and all their plans were spoiled. I lost a lot of respect for some people that year, but I'm still here and they have all gone on to other things.
My oldest daughter was a sophomore at Creighton University, My middle daughter was in high school and the youngest daughter was in middle school. Wife was working at the same job she'd had since 1981. |

Yeah.
'95 was my 40th as well as many of you. It was a breeze, comparatively. '96 was harder on me, being fourty ONE ~into my fourty's~. 2007 was, however, a VERY troubling year for me. My first born turned 30. How the HELL can my CHILD be 30 when I still thought I'm "30-something"??? Sucks. It really does. |
