Hello,

Well, I have most of the parts for my C5 Brake upgrade, but I am still lacking the brackets. Does anyone know where I can get a good set? I need to do this soon, my brakes are pretty much metal to metal.

Exotic Muscle has a pair on Ebay here- though I've seen them much cheaper.

Here is a link to a drawing a saved a while back that has the dimensions for 88-96 caliper brackets here

I'm sure if you found a machine shop willing to do onesy-twosy type stuff, you could get these made a lot cheaper.

I wish I knew what Ed Salinas was doing these days and if he's still making them. His are immaculately engineered and were only $130 when I got mine from him. It didn't take me a hour to do the entire installation.

I wanted to get them from Jeff, but he seems to be having a problem getting them back from the guy who is plating them.

I'd be more than glad to. The problem is, his name became "a name that is not to be spoken of" over there a long time ago. I don't know that they ever outright banned him but they threatened to (he told me that himself) because people were always bringing his name up on the forum when the question of where to get brackets was raised. He only made them as a sideline but they were top-notch pieces and sold for much less than the name vendors' brackets. At some point he moved to another state too and so may have just quit making them after that, I don't know. The bottom line is I haven't heard anything about him in two or three years now.

What makes the C5 calipers better than the J55s on my CE? How many pistons do they have? My CE stops pretty damn well with Hawk pads and powerslot rotors. Is it a looks thing or performance thing?

Anyone have a photo of J55 calipers next to C5s?

Please excuse the slight hijack.

C5 calipers are better design (heat wise). C4 calipers have problems
with venting.

Also, I believe C5 brake pads are bigger, therefore make more contact with rotor.

I think the biggest differences are:

1. C5 has larger pad contact patch.

2. C5 rotors are thicker.

I also think that J55/GS calipers are more than sufficient unless you road race.

If you are just looking for the bling factor, GS/CE calipers with the black body and white raised letters are an option. Easily painted red. No adapters required as far as I know

The C5 stuff has a better initial bite due to the larger surface area of the pad in contact with the rotor. Droptop, for most people the stock J55 is good enough but even in autox events I could use more brakes. Another plus for the C5 brakes is cost. Rotors are about half price and pads are cheaper and offer more selection.
One last point, the J55 calipers also have a knack for spreading apart. The GS calipers are a bit stronger than the standard J55s but the C5 is much better.

C5 calipers are MUCH larger and the rotors are 1.25" compared to the J55 1.1". Superchevyperformance.com used to have the calipers compared side by side C5vsC4

The J55 are probably similar performance street/everyday driving wise, but the C5 brake hardware is more readily available and much cheaper in the long run. Do a price comparison for new GM components and you'll see. I think when I did this conversion the Z06 calipers were $67, now they are (GM prices) $113. The GS caliper is $168 and non gs $200+

Obviously you can shop around for refurbs and generic rotors. On average though, C5 parts are less expensive. FOr example, the only rotors I could get local for the C5 brakes were raybestos brute stop, drilled and slotted for $65 a piece. The J55 brute stop rotor was $90.

Cost seems to be the main reason as stated above. Initial "bite" is more a product of pad compound than caliper selelction. Rotor thickness will help with cooling, but In a street application this is irrelevant. On track or Auto-X this is more important.

So...go with what you can get for less money up front and less money for replacement parts.

I'd suggest finding a more reliable source and being done with it. Damn shame that Ed's apparently not doing this anymore, but that's the way it seems to be. Spend a few more bucks and get it done, unless you want to wait indefinitely and with no guarantees.

Don't worry about it. Those who don't already have them deserve a reasonable and reliable source for them. Post a link if you have one.

If you want another source go talk to Gene at electrodynamics for his set at 300 bucks.

Another source is wdo mkr, good luck getting a set from him as well. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/showp ... 61715450&postcount=70

Guys, these things are feast and famine. I try not to stock much of these and in the past my machinist/plater hae been able to turn out these sets in 3-4 weeks. Typically a batch will last me 6 weeks.I do not make much on these by the time I get them made and plated, I include high quality hardware and then include shipping. My next batch I think I will start to increase the price.

Most of you jumped onto a list when I was still on the CF before I was banned. Well after being banned and not having any access to PM's, well, I had no names to go by.

Most of you jumped onto a list when I was still on the CF before I was banned. Well after being banned and not having any access to PM's, well, I had no names to go by.

So can you put me on a new list? I'm still interested in a set.

Thanks.

Got my brackets yesterday, couldn't be happier. I hope to get them put on in a couple weekends when I have time. Thanks again Jeff.

Matthew

BTW, I was also waiting for brackets since November, so when I saw them come up I jumped on them. Jeff wasn't trying to give anyone the shaft, it's just the way things worked out with the machine shop. You can't control everything.

Yes, noted.

Guys, I just got back from a different machine shop. Their pricing for getting 10 sets made............ 380 per set. Delivery time 4-6 weeks. If I go up to 50 sets, price goes down to the 90's per set.
