thanks for indulging me and my brainstorming I really appreciate it.... here in bama the insurance is based on the book value (I think), because before I added my son to my policy the total insurance for the two cars I have was about 1200/yr. So the insurance is cheap...

You bring up the issues I am most concerned about... there is no guarantee that a C5 or C6 is set up like it should be, and the ones that are guys are asking top dollar.... so for the money, it's safer for me to build what I have since I know the car. I also like the idea of having a sleeper..... lol

my pleasure! These kinds of discussions are very valuable, because they help everyone who is in this debate.

All auto insurance is based, at some point, on a cars book value. Other states allow credit ratings to come into play, too. Get your son to bring his grades up! State Farm offers 25% discounts for good grades! My wife and I pay about $1500 a year for 2 cars, our rental ins, personal property (2 laptops and my Rolex) and my life insurance. All with State Farm.

My concern is with registration cost. My 92 is cheap here in CA the registration is based on the book value of the car. Mine is about 80.00 a year. But a new Vette can be $500.00+ a year!

If you are there in march, you have to check out my absolute favorite dragstrip. Beaver Springs Dragway, located just outside of Benfer, in the town of.....you guessed it, Beaver Springs.

So 1981 it is... cause the prior change was in 1978 or so... My mom's 78 Audi Fox didn't have a cat (Bosch K-Jetronic, I think) and neither did my first car, a POS 1976 AMC Pacer, 258 I6 with a massive (ha!) 1 bbl carb. I am pretty sure my brothers 78 Datsun B210 was cat-less as is a friends 1979 280Z (EFI of some kind). I am equally sure that my oldest brothers 1979 Chevy C10 pickup (250 ci I6) was catless.

One of the reasons that Japanese Imports were not immediately effect by emissions controls was that they didn't need them! For the most part, the smaller more efficient engines in the Japanese cars were that much cleaner than the American sourced engines. Same for many of the smaller European cars.

However, a lot of the OLDER Euro cars - mainly MGs with the push-rod Austin based engines were dirty pigs, so they got nailed... Jag did too... the XJ motor had some icky nasty heads, too.

I know that fire, police and park ranger types can still order vehicles without cats - fire hazards in remote areas.

Man I just got back. WHEW, dats a drive. Took about 2 and a half hours just to get there. Got to play it when I was there and the only thing I need to do is to get the light on the marquee and the lights on the mini marquess to light up. Other than that this game is in great playable shape. The cabinet is in decent shape for the age but you cant complain for 300 bucks! The guy was really cool, turns out we have a ton of things in common and we spent a half hour just talking. Overall an excellent transaction and also my first criagslist buy as well. Oh, the bass on this thing is killer, it thuds your back when you take a hit

If you start sinking a lot of money on upgrades/restoration in a C4, you should look into an agreed upon collector car insurance policy if you qualify and can live with the limitations.

With normal insurance you'll pay more in premiums and get screwed if you have a total loss.

I have my car insured with Sneed. You can get an online quote here:

I didn't say it wasn't worth it, but for a guy that is considering spending $500.00 to $1000.00 for a 383 kit and another thousand or two to put it all together, the blower route requires many, many, more rectangular dollars.

Come to think of it. I have most of the stuff you listed, the main exception being the supercharger. Hmmm.

RACE ON!!!

LOL see..... I will do the project in stages, I will do the rear end and tranny stuff one year and then do the engine upgrades the next....

A few things to consider... Doing these mods will potentially damage the cars resale value, no matter what you do.

There is no denying that the C5/6 chassis is much better, tho, for handling and ride quality. Overall, the car is better built, but it isn't without issues.

The C5/C6 has known problems with the rear diff and both transmissions. Add power, they become even more prone to exploding.

They also have electrical gremlins. I know of at least one car with traction control related failures, how many more are there?

Finally, it's the hidden costs, what happens to your auto insurance? Unless you declare an agreed value coverage, your rates won't go up one inch with the mods. I don't know how Alabama works, but here in CA (and many other states), your annual renewal is based on the book value.

Let's do some math... you find a nice C5 for $25k that is the way you want it... first you have to asses - IS it the way you want it? Lets say it was done right... You sell your 93 for, say, $10k (tops) and you are STILL into this one for $15k and you are still not 100% sure it's been done right.

The Golan supercharger motor looks sweet. It really does, and for the $$, it looks like one helluva deal. Do the mods, and you now have a car that you know was done right.

Keep all reciepts, get the car assessed, and then find out what an agreed policy would cost. But that's optional.

I have a 1978 GMC 3/4 ton 4X4 with "Heavy Duty Emissions". The truck has a GVW of over 7500 pounds, the qualifier for the HD Emissions, I think. The closest thing to emissions equipment is a PCV valve. No smog pump, no EGR valve, no cat, no nothing. The standards it is supposed to meet to pass a smog test are ridiculously high. It has a SBC 400 with a quadrajunk carb and what is amazing is that it will pass the smog test for my 1984 EFI Corvette easier than the Corvette does.

that's an interesting project.

I was always under the impression that making EFI work on a plane was finding the cruising speed RPM and program according to that?

Good lucck!!!!!!!

I've got a contract in Williamsport, PA
This time I'm putting fuel injection on aircraft engines.

Should be interesting, they still run leaded gas in planes, so no O2 sensors!
Exhaust gas temp sensors instead.

Picking up the new rental car tomorrow.
I wonder what I'll get this time!

Andy,
Lets put it this way; I've taken the car to shops to have things done like tire changes, inspections, stuff I can't do myself. On one occasion I was asked who makes the car. The car says Corvette all over it; who the he** do you think makes it? These the types of guys were are dealing with up here in New York. Yea the state may be "cracking down" on smog and "stolen" parts but what happens behind closed garage doors is something different. In any event I am sure President Grant would persuade these guys to pass the vehicle if the issue did come up. I am not saying I condone this type of activity, but the reality is this is New York.

Ouch. That sucks. My experiences here are not all that much different, but you can never predict around here when a CARB or police officer won't be working a sting.

Quote:

Also,... I don't quite understand... wouldn't a newer engine be more efficient and thus omit lower amounts of NOx?? You would think that a newer engine would probably be designed to decrease smog, even a truck engine?

DG

You are catching up with me. I don't agree with the rule. The best I can figure, it's a left over from when the emissions standards for trucks were seriously softer than cars. Hell, pickups, for 49 states, were not required to have cats until 1981, I think.

I am working with Jet-Jock's document.

The basic idea of Guru is to provide these types of documents to our members at no charge.

As soon as I add some (lots) of pictures, I will be posting it!

Check out the library here: Tech Library

WOW, I can't believe this seems like it's going to be worse than adjusting the windows. Is that pdf from Jet-Jock available for download anywhere or it's one of those email and send deals. I have quite a few servers to make an unlimited download of this if anyone wants to send to me.

NAPA carries Victor-Reinz. What they don't have in stock they can usually get overnight. There's a lot of good info in this thread. These gasket numbers and their various thicknesses should be added to the tech sticky once this is all sorted out. It's a very popular subject.

just as a comparison..... I was looking at the vettes for sale on that other forum (whose name we will not speak) and the C5s for sale that have been modified with 500 rwhp and up are being sold for 29k to 40k..... the C6s.... 40k+ so if I went that route it would be a bargain... IMO......

yea, CFI nails it... $$$. Buckets of money.

To upgrade the car and engine, add in the supercharger, you are into $20k. Or pretty damned close to it.

Figure, a quality forged short block, good heads and tune will be $6k, then a transmission, another $1500. Add in the rear end - you will need the D44 - $2k... then comes the SC kit, a new one isn't cheap... $6k?

Add all that up... and toss in labour for what you can't or won't do.

maybe..... but check this out.. golen builds a motor ready for a supercharger http://www.golenengineservice.com/html/lt1_lt4.html
for 8500.00, the supercharger 5000.00, 2k for the rear, and 1500 for the tranny... about 16k.... then the labor 2k? maybe 3? for 600 rwhp.... in a C4.... how much would be spent to do that in a C5? or a C6? factoring in the C4 is paid for.... I think it would cost more than 20k, not to mention all the other issues that come along with a C5 or a C6.....

www.vette2vette.com.

GM or Ecklers? Maybe they sell them? GM has rules forbidding their suppliers from selling outside contract, and I am willing to bet those bolts are still in use by GM.

I took my battery out to get it tested. While I was removing the left fender I discovered that the car is missing several fender screws -- I found a source for those -- and several fender bolts. Any idea where I can get the correct bolts?

hmmmmm see now you have me thinking of the possibilities.... let me ask, what's the down side of having a supercharger? easy to fix? how problematic?
The down side? Rectangular dollars! They are the only thing that beats cubic inches.

RACE ON!!!

I am getting ready to get going on it again...

I have the dash pretty much out... I need to attack the last bits to reach the core itself.

Are you still milking this project? Damn, I'd hate to pay you by the hour!

If you're just really hooked on CDs, another option is to install a six disk CD player. I installed one in a previous C4 behind the passenger seat. The particular model I had was the RF modulator type that "broadcast" to an unused FM frequency. This particular model spliced into the antenna cable and the fidelity was excellent (unlike some of the mp3 RF modulators that do not have a hard wire connection to the antenna line). All the wires you need to access are in the cargo bin behind the passenger seat and can be reached by existing cutouts already there. All you have to do is pull back the carpet a bit and pass the wires through. As I mentioned in my previous post, I'm using an Ipod now but I still have the CD player and if you're interested, you can have it for a little more than a song...

Think of it this way... take a nicely built 400hp, lowish compression 383 and put a super charger on it. BAM! 600hp and all day streetability.

hmmmmm see now you have me thinking of the possibilities.... let me ask, what's the down side of having a supercharger? easy to fix? how problematic?
