The beer belly commercial got me thinking...who's in shape and who's not?

As the title implies, participate in the poll and indicate whether you think you are in shape or not. Then post your reasons why or why not.

If you're in shape, go over what you do or how you do it, to stay in shape. If you're not, maybe go over what you'd change if being in shape seemed easier, or even if you cared.

1...2...3...GO !!!

I'll start.

Yes I consider myself in good shape.

I don't over sleep. Even on days off, when I get my 6-8 hours of sleep I get up...plus I get to get up with my wife and spend some time with her before she leaves for work.

After my wife leaves, or on a weekend when she's home, I'll go for a run. Just a half mile. It gets the blood flowing, boosts my morning metabolism, and starts the day right.

I'll usually try to stay busy after that. Either at work, or at home doing chores or garage projects.

Healthy-ish lunch excluding fast foods and sodas or drinks that are high in sugar.

Same for dinner. Worst thing is snacking before bed. Strictly, I try not to consume anything but water after 7 PM and I take a few vitamins that help me keep my metabolism active while I sleep.

I enjoy being fit and healthy. My heaviest was 250...keep in mind I played high school football at 190, and I felt horrible over 200.

A few years ago I crept back up to 220 and it was horrible. I'm back down to around 170 - 180 depending on my gym schedule and level of bulk, and I can't even imagine letting myself get that heavy again. I'm 6'1" so I'd say I'm at an ideal weight for me right now.

Yeah, it's hard work, but life for me and my wife just seem so much BETTER when we're fit and healthy. We seem to enjoy everything, and ourselves, a lot more.

Interesting thread for me heh.

All through middle and high school I was a bodybuilder, weightlifting team, the works.

I was huge, and gorgeous and it was awesome.

WELL! I met my then wife, tore an internal abdominal muscle, and stopped giving a rats ass.

Went from 180 to about 210 shortly after the injury, then stayed around 220-225 for the next 7 years.

After she left me in January, and I started drinking very heavily, I put on some more weight.

Then when my father passed away in late April, I gained even more.

In June I decided I had to do something. I was looking through one of my old yearbooks and about crapped myself when I saw the difference in my body.

SO! I went on a full recomp. Got in contact with some of my old friends, I started personal training again for a few of my other friends, as i used to love being a trainer, and it helped give me the motivation to get me back where I was.

Been about 3 months now that I've been on a hulluva cutting routine and recomp program. And I'll let the pics tell you what's up.

3 months, up in strength by an astonishing amount (hence why this is a recomp and not just a cut) and down almost 50lb. I should be hitting the 50lb mark this week.

This pic was taken at my dads funeral in the beginning of May..

Resized Image

And this was taken about 2 weeks ago (lost 10lb more since then)...

Resized Image

NOTE: I do NOT recommend going on this severe of a recomp/cut routine without being under the supervision of a trainer, doctors, and with routine blood work being taken.

BUT, if anyone wants some advice, feel free to ask

Thank ya :D

I have about another 15 to go before I make my initial training weight, then I'll be slowly upping my caloric intake to go to the next phase of the recomp.

Right now I'm in an extreme caloric deficit every day, which can be very dangerous unless supervised and you know what your getting into.

I run four miles everyday, I used to box and even though that's behind me I still like to train and spar. I have a gym in my basement, bowflex, freeweights, treadmill, bike, ab chair, blah blah.

OK...like Tommy, I have a shape. In reality I feel like I'm in OK shape for my age. I'm 6'2" and weigh about 210. Can I run a mile? Nah, but it's because of bad knees (HS sports injury). I would really like to get down to 185-190, that's where my Dr. would like to see me.

I spent 9 years Active Duty in the Marine Corps. After I got out in 2007, I cut my physical training to ZERO. I of course kept eating like I always have and started putting on weight in a hurry. I went from 168 lbs to 197 lbs in about a year and a half. I was pissed at myself everytime I stepped on the scale.

For the past 6 months I have been holding steady at the 190lb mark. I'm putting in 10 miles a week now, which is very, very, very painful for me. Took a while to get to this point as well. I somehow got a "heel spur" about 2 weeks after re starting my running routine... 9 years running my guts out every week without a serious injury... take a year off, gain 25lbs.... start back running and get a foot injury that will probally be FOREVER after only 2 weeks.

At any rate I'm gutting it out best as I can. If I keep the runs to 2.5 miles or less my foot is good for the next day. Working hard on curbing my appitiete and altering my diet. Hoping I can lose 10 lbs over next 6 months with my current program. I'm in good shape. My carido is fine and my strength is as good as it ever has been. The foot injury bothers me of course but the weight is harder to losse than it was to gain. It's just a lot harder at 35 yrs to get where I want to be than it was when I was 20yrs old.

Dear Diary,
For my 50th birthday this year, my wife (the dear) purchased a week of personal training at the local health club for me.

Although I am still in great shape since playing on my college football team 30 years ago, I decided it would be a good idea to go ahead and give it a try.

I called the Club and made my reservations with a personal trainer named Belinda, who identified herself as a 26-year-old aerobics instructor and model for athletic clothing and swimwear.

My wife seemed pleased with my enthusiasm to get started! The Club encouraged me to keep a diary to chart my progress....

MONDAY:
Started my day at 6:00a.m. Tough to get out of bed, but found it was well worth it when I arrived at the health club to find Belinda waiting for me.

She is something of a Greek goddess with blond hair, dancing eyes and a dazzling white smile...Woo Hoo!

Belinda gave me a tour and showed me the machines.

She took my pulse after five minutes on the treadmill.

She was alarmed that my pulse was so fast, but I attributed it to standing next to her in her Lycra aerobic outfit.

I enjoyed watching the skillful way in which she conducted her aerobics class after my workout today.

Very inspiring. Belinda was encouraging as I did my sit-ups, although my gut was already aching from holding it in the whole time she was around. This is going to be a FANTASTIC week!!

TUESDAY:
I drank a whole pot of coffee, but I finally made it out the door.

Belinda made me lie on my back and push a heavy iron bar into the air; then she put weights on it!

My legs were a little wobbly on the treadmill, but I made the full mile. Belinda's rewarding smile made it all worthwhile.

I feel GREAT! It's a whole new life for me.

WEDNESDAY:
The only way I can brush my teeth is by laying the toothbrush on the counter and moving my mouth back and forth over it.

I believe I have a hernia in both pectorals. Driving was OK as long as I didn't try to steer or stop.

I parked on top of a GEO in the Club parking lot.

Belinda was impatient with me, insisting that my screams bothered other Club members.

Her voice is a little too perky for early in the morning and when she scolds, she gets this nasally whine that is VERY annoying.

My chest hurt when I got on the treadmill, so Belinda put me on the stair monster.

Why the hell would anyone invent a machine to simulate an activity rendered obsolete by elevators?

Belinda told me it would help me get in shape and enjoy life. She said some other **** , too.

THURSDAY:
Belinda was waiting for me with her vampire-like teeth exposed as her thin, cruel lips were pulled back in a full snarl.

I couldn't help being a half an hour late, it took me that long to tie my shoes.

Belinda took me to work out with dumbbells. When she was not looking, I ran and hid in the men's room.

She sent Lars to find me then, as punishment, put me on the rowing machine which I sank.

FRIDAY:
I hate that bitch Belinda more than any human being has ever hated any other human being in the history of the world.

Stupid, skinny, anemic little cheerleader.

If there was a part of my body I could move without unbearable pain, I would beat her with it.

Belinda wanted me to work on my triceps. I don't have any triceps!

And if you don't want dents in the floor, don't hand me the *&%#(#&!!@*@ barbells or anything that weighs more than a Big Mac.

The treadmill flung me off and I landed on a health and nutrition teacher.

Why couldn't it have been someone softer, like the drama coach or the choir director?

SATURDAY:
Belinda left a message on my answering machine in her grating, shrill voice wondering why I did not show up today.

Just hearing her made me want to smash the machine with my planner.

However, I lacked the strength to even use the TV remote and ended up catching eleven straight hours of the Weather Channel

SUNDAY:
I’m having the Church van pick me up for services today so I can go and thank GOD that this week is over.

I will also pray that next year, my wife will choose a gift for me that is fun – like a root canal or a vasectomy.

You want to know what I do to maintain my "out of shape" shape?

Pizza, Fried mozarella, lots of white bread and butter, pasta, chips, Coke-a-Cola, Skittles, Starburst, Swedish Fish, black licorice, fillet mignon, french fries, breakfast burritos, kettle cooked potato chips...

I gotta go. Getting hungry...

Oddly enough, my BP and Cholesterol levels are spot on! Must be a genetic thing. Also genetic is Cirrhosis of the liver, despite the fact that I rarely drink alcohol. Gotta keep my eye on that one...

The wife and I are thinking about joining a health club, since she started working three 12 hour days, then having three days off as a regular schedule. Just started that a couple days ago. Hopefully we can shed some poundage.

I would consider myself in the above average category as far as health and fitness are concerned. Depending on how my schedule works out, I work out 4-6 times a week. I used to do a lot of weight training and am pretty knowledgeable in that area. I recently began training with kettlebells and it is the best workout I've ever had. I am starting to add in some body weight exercises with that and have a killer workout program I designed. I eat about 75% healthy, 25% unhealthy. That's my biggest obstacle overcoming my BF%, which I'd like to get back to under 10% like it used to be. I have a background in martial arts, training about 6 years total over a period of 10 years. I don't like to run anymore like I used to, but the KBs are an incredible cardio workout so I guess I don't have to. Any Q's, feel free to ask.

Rich - congrats on the weight loss.

Joining the health club will not help you lose weight. You have to actually go to the health club on a regular basis and work out to get the deired effect.

Very nice. My asthma limited my distance but I was always very fast. Ran the 40 in 4.5. Don't know what I would run it at now, 13 years later, but I still feel pretty quick. Played defense at linebacker because I couldn't sustain the running routes when I started with receiving.

Thank Matthew :D

Kettlebells are FUN!!! And I'm always doing some body weight stuff.

My knees won't take the intensity, but have you looked into Crossfit? Sounds like it would be right up your alley.

Under 10%?? Fuck I can dream haha. Right now my goal is to hit 12%. Problem is I would be close if it werent for the damn love handles not coming off at the same rate as everything else, and screwing with my measurement!

Just got back from gym. I increased my weight for some burn and tearing. I'll go back Monday for some reps at lower weight.

I love when it gets chilly out because I don't overheat so bad while working out.

i dont know my 40 time since i never played fb but i ran a 10.98 during summer track 2 years ago without any training.

i run 110 hurdles. My best is a 14.8 as a sophmore in highschool 2 years ago. Im in much better shape now.
Im hoping for a 14.2 this year. My start is the weakest part of my race and indoor track will solve that

Those are very respectable times. I was captain of the track team in HS....seems like a long time ago - lol. I ran a PB 14.7 my senior year and I was in the top in my region. Never made it to states - those kids were running low 14s and high 13s...sheeh. I also ran the 100, 300m hurdles, 4x2, 4x1, 4x4 depending on the race. Can't remember those times as it was a while ago.
