I drove my 91 the 1100 mi. to Boulder Co. Mon. and Tue. to visit my daughter. Wife flew in. My plan was to drive US36 straight through but was thwarted by a severe weather forecast forcing me onto I-80 'till I hit Nebraska where I turned south to US36 Kansas.
What a beautiful road. It's only two lanes, but is smooth, empty, gives one a great feeling for the high plains and see some neat towns. I was able to cruise as slow or fast as I wanted and I did! The vette just ate up the miles.
Wife is staying with daughter and I have a nice place at a lodge with a creek out the front door. I caught my first Colorado Brook Trout on a fly rod.
We visited the NCAR (National center for atmospheric research) lab where my daughter is a research scientist, drove some fabulous mountain roads in the vette and explored Rocky Mountain National Park all the way up to the 12,000 foot continental divide.
When my wife heads home, I'm taking a rental car to meet up with a buddy at his two, one room cabins in the middle of the Pike National Forest for a few days where we will burn through a lot of ammo. Well I'm off to Estes Park to try and find a stream that isn't a torrent from the late snow melt to wet a line. Here's a few pics.
P.S., there's an interesting story behind the carousel and the Vietnam vet that carved the animals and built it.

Very, very nice pictures. Your pictures are well animated! I like people, animals and the flowing streams in the pictures!

Here's a question...you said US36, nice cruising. What were the posted limits? Were there lots of little towns to slow you down? I'm asking because here in SC, we have many not so well traveled roads, but every little podunk gaggle of mobile homes on the side of the road initiates a 35MPH limit and the local constabulary use these stretches as speed traps on a regular basis. Was this a common occurence out there on the plains?

Nice Joe! 36 is a great road. If you come back through Neb. let me know and I will buy you dinner. 34 in Neb is a good ride also. Lots of corn!

Outstanding- some beautiful scenery out there, indeed! I'd love to take the Vette next time we get out that way. The previous owner had it out at Estes Park, and an elk stuck its head in the window.

If you just stayed on 80 a bit longer, we could have cruised some mountain roads in a 2 car caravan.

I lived in Colorado 3 years (college). If I had to move away from Lake Tahoe, Colorado would be my first choice.

Glad to hear that the trip through Kansas didn't bore you to death, that's what I usually hear. It really is a great state and not a flat as people envision. US36 is a very nice road.

Colorado is a great state to take a vacation in, especially in a Corvette. You really have a chance to utilize the Corvettes' handling features. The biggest problem I find driving the Corvette in the mountains is, I tend to drive too fast, thus not being able to partake in the beautiful scenery.

BTW, nice photos.....

Thanks for the comments. Sunburned and sore today from four hours or so of casting/wading below the Estes Park dam. I was rewarded with some very nice Brown and Rainbow trout. It's catch and release only, no live bait. Off to an art fair in Denver today (gotta keep the ladies happy) then the Buffalo Bill museum.
I use a 5 weight Redington fly rod, sweet little thing.
Matt, the car ran great. Lots of driving between 2500/3000rpm. That's with a 3.07A4. Set a new personal top end too. That's the end of that fooling around, I'm happy now. 23.5 MPG and that's on paper. No oil consumption.
US36 through Kansas and Co. has a town about every 25 miles or so. Most are towns in name only. I did not see any speed traps, stuck to the speed limits in town and saw only two patrol cars. Speed limit on 36 is 65. Later.
