No rain in the forecast, go out to drive my Corvette to work. As I'm sitting in the garage warming it up, I notice lots of smoke. Lots of smoke. White smoke, continuous. Not just a puff on startup. I didn't have time to look at anything I had to get to work, where I am now.
I think I'm just going to have to park it. I can't afford head gaskets right now. |

I know. I've been toying with selling it. If anyone is interested in an 87 with lots of new parts, I would be willing to listen.

Ugh that sounds crappy. I believe white smoke (especially continuous) is a sign of coolant/water leak such as a bad head gasket. Let us know what you find out.

Dude, don't sell your car over a head gasket. Many on here will walk you through the job, it really isn't bad if you take your time. If your car isn't your daily driver then you don't need to be in a hurry doing it. It's just alot of bolts. Also, you can upgrade your head gasket to a thinner one to pick up some ponies, then upgrade other things on the reassembly if you have the money. If not, just put it back together. You will respect your car so much more after you have been into the motor and back out.

Corrosion between the head and intake base can let coolant under pressure leak into the lifter valley and into the oil pan on L98s.
Common with iron heads. But if you have aluminum heads, I'd bet on a bad head gasket first. Do you have an oil cooler by chance? Maybe if you're lucky that's your source of coolant. Never seen it happen personally, but... |

Nevermind, none of that will cause white smoke. Now I see why you asked.
I think a head gasket job goes for about $50 + labor these days. |

I know you are feeling beat down by your car. But just chill for a few days. Do you really HAVE to do the milling and the valves?
Just replacing the gaskets wouldn't be TOO bad. Don't leave us, man. Just give yourself a little time to cool down. |

It depends on what the estimate looks like. This isn't a standard shop, it's a guy that is a circle track racer who does repair/builds to pay for his addiction. If I were to keep it, I'd want it done right. To sell it, I'd assume a buyer would want it done right. Yeah, I have a roof that leaks, and a wife that wants new windows to the tune of $8k. So, this comes at a bad time, and makes me think it may be a sign that my Corvette days are numbered. Thanks for the good words though. |

Hey Dale sorry to hear about this. Really sux when these repairs come to light on these cars. It never is a good time. I remember the year I had to replace my injectors. Two weeks Later the 3/4 clutch pack goes in the tranny. A very expensive summer for the Vette. Hopefully you won't need to sell. I do like your attitude about the repair though. If you do it your going to do it right and if you have to sell it the new owner will want the repair done right Take Care Man Gary |

To hell with the head rebuild, that's where everything starts adding up. Just clean the heads up nice, maybe even scuff them with some very fine grit paper on a block if you think the surface is too slick and slap em on.

Dont give up. A head pull on a SBC is easy even if youre a novice. The only special tool you really need is a torque wrench, which you can borrow or rent. The rest is just nuts and bolts. Just follow along in the Chiltons or FSM. We can help you here also.

This is where older cars start to beat you down.
If it's paid for, keep it. I agree with CC, scuff the head/block and be done with it. At this mileage, short of doing valve seals, I wouldn't waste the $$. I am also with 81c3, this is a DIY project. Just dedicate a weekend. |

FYI unless you have big huge windows or want something other than vinyl, it shouldnt be 8 grand unless you have 24 of them in the house. it's what i do and i can give you a quote if you want.
and i'll offer a hand or advice if you decide to take on the head gasket job. i'd buy if i did not have a bunch of other projects hell i'd even think of offering to do your windows in trade for the car if it were feasible on both sides. |

You'd be amazed what you can do. I was 17 when I changed the head gaskets on my s10 blazer - I had to do it over the weekend so I could drive to school Monday morning. I had never done any serious work to a car before but surprised myself with how well I did. I just followed the instructions in the book and had a little help from my neighbor adjusting the rockers. I guarantee that you are capable of doing this. Just have a little confidence in yourself! Good luck! Matthew |

You are too critical of yourself, you got the tune up done. There are no extra points for style or speed. I have a nice Snap On 1/2 cordless electric impact and a torque wrench, will travel. Hell it would be fun to tear your car down and then say something like wow I wonder where all this shit goes..... Just kiddin man, I do have tools and will help though. Car might be down for a couple of weekends but so what it's better than paying out the ass.

I think you could do it as long as you realize that it will take twice as long as it should and will not go according to plan. Nothing I work on goes as planned. I have gotten used to it. My mother in law needed front brakes on her Neon a few months ago. Simple enough job right ? A caliper bolt broke off flush trying to take it out and the piston in one of the calipers cracked in half. A simple brake job involved two extra trips to the parts store and a helicoil kit before it was over. One of the first things I did to my 93 was a gear swap which went smoothly until the cover was seeping gear lube, I got the bright idea to retorque the bolts and stripped one, so I had to pull it out AGAIN and bust out the helicoil kit.

I know this is going to sound peculiar, but what does the white smoke smell like? Does your car have an automatic transmission?
I don't know the particular configuration of Corvette automatics, but many automatics draw operating vacuum from one of the cylinders. There is a valve that prevents transmission fluid from back flowing into that cylinder. If this valve fails, fluid can get into the cylinder and burn white. Transmission fluid smells different from coolant. |
