I'm gonna get off the canned soda kick and water is not one of my favorite beverage choices. Don't suggest beer, wine or booze because I don't drink. Looking for a low sugar, healthy alternative that I can drink a lot of but won't load me up with unhealthy ingredients. Anybody have any ideas? When I go out to eat I usually get unsweetened iced tea and water. I can only handle a couple of glasses of that though. I guess I want something that tastes and looks like soda but isn't soda.

Crystal light is the best thing for no calorie/sugar drink if you're looking for diet oriented.

The other thing we do is get sparkling water (seltzer water) from Meijer for about $.69 a 2 liter and add syrup (raspberry, strawberry, etc - you can find it at most european import stores) to make our own soda. It's a very common Polish thing.

Try ice water with lemon slices and plenty of ice. Better than gatorade. Gatorade has all properties of sweat!

Some recent articles and a physicians warning about drinking soda got me thinking. I've had some blood work done and on several tests it has shown slightly elevated blood sugar levels. I used to drink lots and lots of beer. Now I drink soda, eat candy bars and cookies and have several bowls of ice cream a week. Unfortunately, it looks like I have substituted one unhealthy lifestyle for another. My weight has been stable for the past 15 years or so flucuating between 208 in the summer and 226 or so in the winter. Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years have me packing in the goodies and packing on the pounds. I probably drink about 4 sodas a day. I like a carbonated beverage over a non carbonated one. I've tried flavored seltzers but they just don't cut it with me. I guess I'm more conscious of health as I get a little older. Coming up on the double nickle (55) this July. As much as I'd like to be a poster child of living healthy, I know that's just not going to happen. So if I'm going to make bad choices, might as well pick ones that are less bad for me than others.

Heres some anti-soda propaganda.

Liver damage

Soda damages your liver. Consumption of too many soft drinks puts you under increased risk for liver cirrhosis similar to the increased risk faced by chronic alcoholics.

Tooth decay

Soda eats up and dissolves the tooth enamel. Researchers say that soft drinks are responsible for doubling or tripling the incidence of tooth decay. Soda's acidity is even worse for teeth than the solid sugar found in candy.

Kidney stones and chronic kidney disease

Sodas are well known for their high phosphoric acid content, a substance that changes the urine in a way that promotes kidney stone formation. Drinking one quart (less than three 12-ounce cans) of soda per week may increase your risk of developing kidney stones by 15 percent.

Heartburn & acid reflux

Heavy consumption of soda is a strong predictor of heartburn. Many carbonated beverages are very acidic. They also deliver a lot of air in the form of carbon dioxide, which can cause distension of your stomach. And that distension appears to be associated with more reflux.

Osteoporosis

Soft drinks containing phosphoric acid are definitely linked to osteoporosis (a weakening of your skeletal structure) because they lead to lower calcium levels and higher phosphate levels in your blood. When phosphate levels are high and calcium levels are low, calcium is pulled out of your bones. The phosphate content of soft drinks is very high, and they contain virtually no calcium. Researchers found, that high soda consumption (particularly cola(7)) in children poses a significant risk factor for impaired calcification of growing bones.

Heart disease

Heavy soda drinkers are more likely to develop risk factors for heart disease. Research shows that drinking more than one soft drink a day is associated with an increased risk of developing metabolic syndrome -- a group of symptoms such as central obesity, elevated blood pressure, elevated fasting blood sugar, elevated fasting triglycerides, and low levels of HDL or "good" cholesterol.

Impaired digestion (gastrointestinal distress)

Drinking soda can upset the fragile acid-alkaline balance of the stomach and other gastric lining, creating a continuous acid environment. This prolonged acid environment can lead to inflammation of the stomach and duodenal lining which becomes quite painful. This prolonged acid environment can lead to inflammation of your stomach and its lining.

I was gonna suggest tea. Soda is bad in so many ways. I quit drinking that garbage for the most part. They make it so easy to drink a gallon a day. Now if I could kick coffee...

The only carbonated stuff I drink any more is beer.

BTW, Guinness is pretty healthy as far as beer goes.

I am sorry, but if soda was that bad, by God, people would be dropping in the streets.

I am sure that there are some issues with consumption of anything, but you would have drink a fucking case a day for the rest of your life.

If anything, we need to stop drinking them for the simple fact that they are fattening.

That's enough. After that, I have problems with some of the other problems.

T-Bone, without going into the gory details, I have a history of carbonated beverage use that sounds remarkably similar to yours.
Around New Year I changed my pop habit to 1 real cola and the rest 'diet' (4or5). I have dropped 10+ pounds to 190, the heartburn has pretty much disappeared and hopefully my teeth will last as long as I do.
I drink coffee with flavored creamer mornings and evenings.
P.S. Didn't Hugh Hefner used to drink a case of Coke a day?

I'm 61 and broke 150 lbs when I was in the 6th grade. Now @ 6'4 and 271 I'm only 22 lbs heavier then when I got out of the Navy in 1972. I think I consume maybe 2-4 glasses of cola/month. I'd rather drink juice or lemon water. Gaterade makes me sick!
Beer however seems to go soooooo well with pizza. My pizza consumption is up along with Sam Adams.

I didn't think it tasted that bad. Not as good as Coke though, not as bad as Diet Coke.

The thing about soda, is it does nothing for me. It's not healthy, and it's not cheap, so I can do without it. Beer is probably much worse for me, but at least it gives me a buzz.

OK, so what we have learned here is Coke Zero has a half life of 1 year.

I just went cold turkey to kick my Pepsi habit and I refuse to drink any of the diet pops.

If you have diabetes, be careful of how much fruit juice you drink It's loaded with natural sugars.

For me now it is water and one of my all time favorites ice cold "Moo Juice".

you know Tommy everything you eat turns to sugar in your body. For me whole breads and (my favorite) pancakes peak my sugar well beyond normal.
as for the diets I like diet Pepsi has more of a bite
I quit the sugared soda cold turkey and drank everything else for months before I tried diet sodas and I liked them.
Now if I sip a sugared soda it tastes real thick and sweet

I drink milk with dinner or in the evening at home but most of the time I drink seltzer water. I'll occasionally have a fountain sods on a weekend.

I was weened on Seltzer Water - it's a great alternative to soda. I prefer Polar brand:

http://www.polarbev.com/Default.aspx?tabid=59

Polar has 13 different flavors. The most common are Lime, Lemon and Black Cherry around here. I may special order some other flavors from the local supermarket in bulk. It's nice and light in your stomach but each flavor is definitely distinct. It's great after a workout or on a hot day as it does not fill you up like soda. As someone mentioned soda is like drinking syrup to me.

I don't like regular water either.

I'm gonna try to skip all soft drinks today. My wife bought some individual packets of Crystal Light Lemon and Ice Tea flavored drink mix. I swirled my first one this morning. Let's see how long I can go with no caffeine or Diet Coke.
I've been sick at my stomach all morning so far, so it should be interesting!!!

Good luck - I have heard that caffeine withdrawal is real nasty - headaches, etc. I have never been tempted to try it.

The best thing about avoiding caffeine, is that when you pop open a Coke 6 months later, holy hell, it's like drinking battery acid with meth stirred in.

I drink Vitamin Water and G2 as suggested above. You won't miss the carbonation after awhile. They taste good, have some sugar but none of the acid

I guess I'm lucky. I love water. And it's the cheapest of the suggestions above

I think it's like anything. You get used to it and it makes you feel pretty good after you get over missing the sugar and caffiene. Now when I drink a coke my teeth hurt, I feel DEhydrated, and my stomach aches. I do like the taste sometimes (~ once a week), but I can never get through a 20 oz bottle. It's amusing.

We have good water from our own well that we run through a reverse osmosis unit to get rid of the nitrates. (farm country you know) Other than an occasional diet pepsi I drink EAS protein drinks. I have one in the morning with my natural peanut butter and sugar free grape jelly sandwich on toast. MMMMMM

The EAS AdvantEDGE has 17 grams of protein and only 2 grams of carbs vitamins and minerals and NO SUGAR. The chocolate fudge is the best especially when its cold. I gotta have one right now!

It will give me energy till lunch and then I have one at about 4 oclock to get me to supper. Works for me.

Sam Adam's light and Amstel light are my foundation beers. I also will mix it up a little with labatt blue, modello, coors light, michelob light, sam adams seasonals, and any import that's on sale at the store. Not a fan of bud, miller, etc. Not that I'm a huge drinker, I might go through a 6 pack a week.
