Subject: Factory Five Tour Update

Hi Everyone,

The weather does not look like it is going to stop our visit to Factory Five on Saturday. The latest forecast is for snow Friday afternoon into Saturday morning, but less than 5 inches is predicted. We will be on major highways most of the time, so they should be in good shape for our journey.

We have a great turnout so far, about 15 club members and friends. Members from the Bay State Corvette Club will leave from the Shaw's Supermarket on Rte 109 in Medway at 8:00 AM. From there, we will pick up our friends from the Eastern Mass Corvette Club at Ashmont Plaza on Rte 1A in Walpole at 8:30 AM. Car pooling will be available at each location. We should arrive at Factory Five in Wareham before 10:00 AM. I will lead the pack down and will make sure I drive safely, according to road conditions.

For those of you who want to travel down on your own, I am including the directions for you. Plan on arriving by 9:30 or so. Brandon is our host.

Factory Five Racing
9 Tow Road
Wareham, Ma. 02571
508-291-3443

Take Rte 495 South to exit 1, toward Wareham/New Bedford
Follow for .4 miles to exit 21, Rte 28 North, toward Middleboro
Follow for .2 miles to Rte 28 North (Cranberry Highway)
Follow for .3 miles. Turn right onto Tow Road. (industrial park)
Look for all of the Corvettes in the parking lot (yeah, right!)

If the weather takes a turn for the worst, I will notify everyone by E-mail no later than noon on Friday. I will also call Louie, since I know he doesn't have E-mail . If you know of someone else who plans on going and they are not on this E-mail list, can you keep them informed for me?

Thanks!!

Andy

No they arent, alot of them are different, and so are the diagnostic procedures. 94/95 are the same. 92/93 are different to 94/95.

Use the Genuine GM service manual and read the right diagnostics the first go.

No good trying to guess by using something that is almost the same. Its like trying to thread a 13mm nut onto a 1/2" bolt, they are almost the same, but then, they are not the same at all are they.
Quote:
No kidding? Who'd thunk it.

You asked. You want the whole story or just read the blurb?
Quote:
I'm not going to buy a 94 manual just to help another Corvette guy out.

Tell him to bite the bullet and spend the money then, without it, the codes are useless to you anyway, cause you wont get the diagnostic flow charts off the site listed.
Quote:
Thanks Woodstock, that's a start, dosen't show any opti codes though.

You should look again, cause they ARE there: http://www.troublecodes.net/GM/94_57P.shtml

There is well over 200 DTCs for a 94/95, and without the service manual to tell you exactly what will set them off instead of that garbage i see there on that site, all youre going to be able to do is get lucky if you managed to fix it. You cant test anything properly without the proper flow charts.

You might think what i say is harsh and i might come across as an arrogant prick, but the questions remain "do you want to do it right first go or not?" "Do you want to spend all day stuffing around and then come out looking like you have no clue when you got no where and cost a heap of money in the process?" I reckon youll answer no to both.

Im all for helping people out, but i wont give people a bum steer, and i wont help anyone that wont meet me halfway. I also wont go trying to 2nd guess at issues that can very easily be fixed by following what is written in the factory service manual.

Lived in Littleton from '87 to'90 in a upper class tract up on a hill, very close to Highlands Ranch. Could not belive I bought this 3300 sq ft house for 118K, but then I was coming from high priced California. I had to leave because I got laid of from Martin Marietta (now Lockheed Martin).

Hated to leave as I loved Colorado although I heard there is a lot more people now. Moved back to CA and got laid off again, also loosing 20K on the house I bought there. Wound up retiring in Wichita KS after 10 years with Boeing.

Jeff,

You should seriously consider a group purchase. If you can get enough people to commit to buying a set, you might be able to make a decent profit and still keep this mod affordable to the masses. I see on both sites, alot of people who are interested in this mod. I would be glad to post on the "other forum" to try and drum up some business for ya. Just say the word.

No offense my friend, but we are continuously bombarded with media misinformation to a point where I for one have little faith in the validity of such information.

I read that China and India produce more hydrocarbons than the US and Canada combined. They consume more oil based fuels as well. So why are we being held accountable for the greenhouse effects? And why should any of us feel guilty for the polar ice caps melting?

I say send the enviros over to those countries and let them protest their governments. Then we can watch 'em rot in those prisons over there!

Alright, I'm keeping the ignition switch in mind as well as the starter. How much do you think it would be to replace the ignition switch? I know a starter is probably around $30?

Interesting remarks you make about the Arctic (& Antarctic) ice recovery.
Can you provide links to substantiate? The following report from the NYT
seems to contradict you

The New York Times
Scientists Report Severe Retreat of Arctic Ice
By ANDREW C. REVKIN September 21, 2007

FAIRBANKS, Alaska, Sept. 20 — The cap of floating sea ice on the Arctic
Ocean, which retreats under summer’s warmth, this year shrank more than
one million square miles — or six Californias — below the average
minimum area reached in recent decades, scientists reported Thursday.

While satellite tracking of polar sea ice has been done only since 1979,
several ice experts who have studied Russian and Alaskan records going
back many decades said the ice retreat this year was probably unmatched
in the 20th century, including during a warm period in the 1930s. “I do not
think that there was anything like we observe today” in the 1930s or
1940s, said Igor Polyakov, an ice expert at the University of Alaska,
Fairbanks.

The ice retreat has been particularly striking this year. The Alaskan side of
the Arctic Ocean has stretches of thousands of square miles of open
water; the fabled Northwest Passage through the islands of northern
Canada was free of ice for weeks; and the sea route between the Atlantic
and Pacific Oceans north of Russia was nearly clear a week ago, with one
small clot of ice around a group of Siberian islands.

Quote:
A group of Russian scientists are predicting and preparing for global cooling.

Remember the 2004 movie with Dennis Quaid, "The Day After Tomorrow"?

What the Russians are probably doing is readying contingency plans in
case the Great Ocean Conveyer Belt slows further or shuts down completely.

From:
National Oceanography Centre, Southampton,
The Atlantic heat conveyor

"The Atlantic is the only ocean where heat is transported north across the
equator. Here warm surface water from the tropics reaches further north
than in anywhere else. The relatively warm, salty water of the Gulf Stream
system remains at the ocean surface west of Svalbard to a latitude of
about 80 degrees before it dips underneath the much fresher and less
dense polar water. The heat released by this warm water makes the
climate in regions bordering the eastern North Atlantic warmer than at
similar latitudes elsewhere. The results of this warm flow can also be seen
in the extent of Arctic Sea ice, which differs markedly from that in the
Pacific region of the Arctic. The effect of this Atlantic heat conveyor is most
noticeable in winter.

... Should the surface water freshen for some reasons, it would have to cool
further before it can sink. Sufficient freshwater input might reduce salinity
to the extent that the surface water could not possibly sink, even at sub-
zero temperatures.

Paradoxically global warming could create precisely this effect. Increased
rainfall, melting of sea ice, glaciers and the Greenland ice sheet are all
possible consequences of higher temperatures, and could reduce North
Atlantic surface salinity sufficiently to slow down or even stop the formation
of deep water. If this happens, the THC may shut down. Once stopped,
the heat conveyor may take time to recover, and the consequences would
be a cooling of northwest Europe."

Here is one of several YouTube polar ice cap animations.

2007 Polar Ice Cap Retreat
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=onWoah881JQ

This one is said to be: "created from daily sea ice concentration data from
the National Snow and Ice Data Center, illustrating the shrinkage of the
polar ice cap to a record extent in September 2007."

the starter solenoid is wired to the switch which if it has a hot short could keep the solenoid running the starter.

The Moroso #62200 will prime the pump and distribute oil through most
of the system. It is just that, without a collar shaped like a stub or dist
housing to seal the opening and thus complete the pass side gallery,
there is less pressure buildup possible and the pass bank of lifters is not
fully charged with oil.

With lifters lubricated during assembly, the absence of a collar may not be
a big deal - the pass side will purge in moments upon startup. But, if
time is not a factor, exchanging for another model with the collar will
ensure all points are pressurized by prelubing.

biggrizzly, the shaft you provided a link to is the shaft that transmits
motion from the stub shaft or distributor to the pump. It has a collar
at one end and a female tang at the other - it is not what you want.

Quote:
They make a tool for priming Gen 1 SBCs. I am unaware of anyone
who makes such a tool for the LT1-hence my original answer.

Actually, if the LTx intake is removed, along with the stub shaft that is
used to drive the pump from the dist gear on the rear of the cam, then
a large flat blade screwdriver can be turned by hand to prime an SBC oil
pump. With enough wrist action, oil will flow to the galleries and bearing
faces.

The catch about using a screwdriver or one of the aftermarket shafts that
do not include collars is that no oil will be pressurized through the
passenger side lifter gallery - normally the lower portion of the LT1 stub
shaft or the bottom end of a Gen 1 conventional dist housing seals the
hole in the valley that receives the dist housing. This vertical hole
intersects with the pass side lifter gallery.

The collars on the better pump priming tools act to seal the leak at this
point. A cord or cordless drill with some power will spin the pump and
you should expect to see good pressure displayed on the dash gauge.

Last year I bought a pair of Ceramic coated Hooker Shortie headers from a guy on CF for cheap, I think I remember paying like $50 or $75 for them. I received them and cleaned them up knowing I would use them when I did my engine work. Well tonight is the first time I tried to mate them up to the heads and cats. Guess what?
If I were to bolt them up to the heads there is at least a half inch to an inch space between the flange on the converter and the flange on the bottom of the header. From my research there is not supposed to be any donut gasket, and even then I don't see how I can adjust the converter up to the header.
Any thoughts?

Next this guy's gonna buy a house beside an airport and -ya know.

South Lake Tahoe, last summer - residents faced $500 fines for removing any dead undergrowth around their homes because of the "natural" beauty it lent to the area.
A fire started and moved rapidly thru this fuel and destroyed 200 homes.

Sucky as the midwest is, we have a pretty nice selection of world-class tracks within a reasonable drive. And there is a plethora of great ones that are a bit smaller and don't have the facilities to handle a televised event, but are still a blast to drive.

So Bill, I guess that's our deal...I'll meet you at Laguna someday for a ride in one of those little death traps you call Karts.

BTW cage is complete, lexan in the front, new roof weighs in at about 1.5 lbs. I'll get some pics up soon but there is still too much real work to do before Friday so it'll have to wait.

The corkscrew is wild but it's the only section on the track that's really good. The real adrenlin rush out here is Sears Point.

One of these days I've got to post some pics of my roadracing karts. And got to post a pic of the Unlimited Kart with the wings, 110 hp at 425 lbs.

About 3 hours total work, including numerous breaks, and a very nice difference in the handling. Corners much better and the ride comfort is about the same.

Anybody need a set of lighlty used Monroe Sensatracs?

Cutting down trees to reduce greenhouse gases?

Wheres the Sierra Club when you need it!?

In an environmental dispute seemingly scripted for eco-friendly California, a man asked prosecutors to file charges against his neighbors because their towering redwoods blocked sunlight to his backyard solar panels.

But the couple next door insisted they should not have to chop down the trees to accommodate Mark Vargas' energy demands because they planted the redwoods before he installed the solar panels in 2001.

After more than six years of legal wrangling, a judge recently ordered Richard Treanor and his wife, Carolyn Bissett, to cut down two of their eight redwoods, citing an obscure state law that protects a homeowner's right to sunlight.

The couple does not plan to appeal the ruling because they can no longer afford the legal expenses, but they plan to lobby state lawmakers to change or scrap the law.

The Solar Shade Control Act means that homeowners can "suddenly become a criminal the day a tree grows big enough to shade a solar panel," Treanor said.

The case marks the first time a homeowner has been convicted of violating the law, which was enacted three decades ago, when few homeowners had solar systems.

Residents can be fined up to $1,000 a day for violations, though the judge did not impose any fines against the Treanors.

Vargas says the law protects his $70,000 investment in solar power, and he believes it should be strengthened.

"I think it's unfair that a neighbor can take away this source of energy from another neighbor," he said.

Treanor and Bissett, who drive a hybrid Toyota Prius, argue that trees absorb carbon dioxide, cool the surrounding air and provide a habitat for wildlife.

Vargas, who recently bought a plug-in electric car, counters it would take two or three acres of trees to reduce carbon dioxide emissions as much as the solar panels that cover his roof and backyard trellis.

Bernadette Del Chiaro, clean energy advocate for Environment California, says the solar shade law might need to be revised to prevent similar disputes.

----So the morons will continue to engage in hypocrisies until we have no power and no trees. That'll make the Sierra Club real happy !!!

The list is detailed in the Genuine GM service manual.

No kidding? Who'd thunk it.

I'm not going to buy a 94 manual just to help another Corvette guy out.

It comes with time and making mistakes...Any interior, plastic piece I touch I break...Electrical, forget it. Little by little.....

Good thing about these forums is all the info is here if you wanna tackle something .Ive saved thousands in repair bills over the years. In fact without the info onthe web I would never even consider owning a Vette.

There's no doubt you were steered in the right direction. I've got $1500 in my factory LT1 head castings and intake porting, the over-sized valves and related, etc. And I got a deal, IMO. It works well but still could have been better for not much more money overall, using after-market heads.

What brand of window seals did you buy? I'm going to replace these on my 89 in the next month or so also. Figured I would do that when the door panels are removed for front speaker/amp repair.

Joel

just be careful if you drill out the rivets holding the strip in if you go through it too far youll go through the door leaving you some holes to repair on the outer side of the door
that will ruin youre day be carefull :thumbright:

As copied and pasted from......

Heres why I pushed him to do it while were talking budget....

Originally we were going to do a cheapie S/C 350 and reuse everything we could just to see how cheap it could be done.
THe "what abouts" and common $ense derailed that thought..:

-3 angle V.J. $160
-CC chambers-Freebie
-Cut heads $50-100 depending on shop
-seals $20
-Springs, retainers, etc $150
-Possibility of guides -$170
-Full port/polish $1000, taking the heads to the limit.
-Flow heads on Superflow 600 $52

That right there is approx $1500, reason enough to start thinking aftermarket. Could you shortcut and make it run anyway, probably. Sure it still would have hauled butt, however once youve gone so far wouldnt take much to really step it up.

oops, add 240 for the cost of the heads and soda blasting.
Now....

That price is reusing stock valves and seats wiht 80k miles on them, then throwing some boost at it...Could be done, but....

For a mild N/A 350 didnt see the need for big valves.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
THen Brian got the stroker bug...somehow....
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Add in the cost of cutting for larger seats ($120-$180 depending on shop), and new valves ex: Manley stainless, $12-$15 each and its easy to sink almost 2k into a set of heads.Iin the end for the money they still dont come close to aftermarket $$/hp. At that point the choice was obvious.

Now, Imo for a mild 350 you could get away with a 3 angle, little less port work,(major improvement but not crazy#s), a shave, seals, springs and flow them for about $1200-$1300

So really, for the money vs/power he is still on track IMO. I bet his beast might tap the door of 700 or close to it when were done. (bastard!!)

Thanks...

Final color is 06 Vette white, interior coca cola red. Originally white on red (bucket seats), just updated the colors. I wanted black with blue pearl but noone would paint it black. Besides, Im not a diligent waxer and having something stealthy and low maintenance is more up my alley.

Ill apply permanenet undercoating via drag radials.

Before its asked....

358 cid
-Pump gas motor
-Scat 4340 crank
-0 deck, 4 bolt, studded mains
-Manley Sportmaster 6" rods/pistons, floating pins
-Dart Conquest (early pro1 head) ported/angle milled by Tony Mamo, tops right around 302cfm
-Team G with porting, angle milled
-Solid roller 250/254@ .050, 280/286 adv. .670/.660 on a 110 by Tony
-Crower sever Duty lifters
-Jesel 1.6 shaft rockers
-Dougs 1-3/4" headers

Should idle around 12-1300, shift about 72-7400

-1/2" Polished stainless line from pickup to carb (learned about how to polish on this project)
-1997 T56 trans
-Centerforce DF clutch, billet flywheel with 14 lbs removed
-4.11 rearend
-SSM lift bars, boxed uppers, Edelbrock control arm braces, crossbrace I made & welded in rear to stiffen rear section...
-Quick ratio steering, etc etc....

PS and PB only, no power windows or any of that nonsense.

It should sit an inch or two lower when done with 295/50/15 in back I hope.
