I can't contribute much to this thread....I've had a couple of 'stangs with sticks, the rev limiter always got a good workout as I missed as many gears as I hit when racing. I went the lazy man's way and went auto.

That's what I'm asking what did you use to hook the drill motor? Is there any special tool or did you use duct tape?

Sweet, that is the one I ordered, thanks for the confirmation. I'm picking it up today. I'll post the results later why I'm using that one vs. oem.

As for now, anyone doing a ZF swap (with ZF clutch) on a 84-85 should change their flywheel to this one you listed. This is different from what I had posted endlessly before that the oem FW was ok.

Yeah, I can't get anything concrete on the a/f ratio. My nitrous kit is a wet kit so I'm not overly worried about that, they are calibrated pretty good with enrichment fuel. I am more worried about the N/A air fuel ratio. I'm going to check it but don't know what it should be. If I can't find out anything else then I think low to mid 13's would be a good a/f ratio to run and be safe.

Nice catch, Tommy

Jsup, your oil temp is fine. If mine idles 10 mins or so the oil is still cold, but the water temp is up and fan kicks on. Don't forget to change your oil and filter after running a little bit. The goo you disturbed but couldn't get out of the bottom end, the permatex and dust from scraped gaskets, etc. will end up in the filter pretty quickly. I've seen average oil pressures drop considerably, then a new filter brings them back. Keep and eye on it, but don't be surprised if you see your pressure lower than when you first got it running. As a side note, I put in a new K+N oil filter and the pressure is more than it was with a new Fram. I always change the oil out again after about an hour of runtime on a build as well, just to be safe.

The waiting game works good in a few ways, more affordable, and you don't find deals on the parts you're looking for all at once.

The only downside is, well, waiting, and of course seeing half of your parts sitting on the shelf for months laughing at you.

I don't carry a CC balance. I can get a loan for a lot less than the 12% of my CC. The loan talk is just impatience. I want to do a lot of stuff all at once.

Waiting would be a good idea, except I think this is one of those things that comes up only now and then. I think the original owner is a pretty good guy. As for the current owner, his mistake could be my gain. I could defer some of the other things until it gets warmer, and just buy this now without a loan. Like I said... impatience.

If you've got a monthly budget, that means you've got the money, maybe just not all at once. So spending triple that budget this month means no mods for the next two months, etc. But you don't need a loan for that, a credit car will do just fine. Mine are around 12%.

Or you could wait and save a few months worth as a buffer so it will never be a debt even if you exceed the monthly budget. There are easy savings accounts that are accessible and earn interest, I use ING to save an extra few mortgage payments and renters deposits. Used to be 4.5% but lately it's dropped so I may find a different one.

As for the TPI, a ported base and runners is absolutely worth it! The base and runners on these things are a biggest restriction. The throttlebody and plenum, aren't. Plus the plenum can be easily modified for free with a rotary tool.

Yeah, I think some people would rather go to the dentist than to the race track. Of course, they'll sit there and waste your time telling you about how they WANT to.

But hey, I was kicking tires for at least a year before I finally dove in. I may wait until April for my next one, since it's the only track within 4 hours of here, pretty sad considering I'm in SoCal. Plus I want to do some easy miles to break in the new trans anyways.

Cool, thanks for the info. That's why I said I wasn't sure. I had heard something was needed but didn't know. So if a complete, assembled, balanced 2 piece rear main seal engine was built or bought, it could be dropped right in place of a 1 piece rear seal engine? Could be a good option for the original poster, and maybe me someday.

That T56 was designed by Borg Warner.

GM has lots of history with Borg Warner. I presume the only reason they paid ZF is because at the time they couldn't get it from any of their existing partners. I would guess Chevy probably ate shit on the cost of it too, they had no economies of scale there. I would also guess it factored into the pricing of the ZR1. I'll quit guessing now and get to work.

My clutch parts just showed up today I have to pick em up.

Hey LD85, thanks for all your help and advice with the hsr intake. Mine is up and running great now. I posted a few pics in the off topic section the other day, and another post had all the details. The thread on CF about your hsr build helped me quite a bit. We should bring that thread over here if we can, lots of useful info.

They make a tool for priming Gen 1 SBCs. It is essentially the driveshaft of a distributor, It is designed to be used with the engine buttoned up before the distributor is installed. If you remove the oil pump drive unit with the intake off, you may be able to use a similiar tool to prime the pump. I am unaware of anyone who makes such a tool for the LT1-hence my original answer.

It was probably jerry rigged.

P.S. Priming the pump does nothing for rings and cylinder walls. They are splash oiled by the crank. Even with oil press up, the crank must turn. That's why you preoil during assembly. The pump is a gear pump which is self priming.

I would crank it fully assembled, the ignition and fuel disabled and the plugs out till it showed oil pressure.

Can't you just spin the pump manually with a drill motor?

It's been a few years since I did mine, but we hooked a drill to it and spun it with the motor off until oil came up into the heads. You can also run the starter with the ignition coil unhooked, but this kills the battery and is less than ideal on new pistons and cylinder walls...

The small loan thing is thinking out loud.
I'm not exactly in the poor house. But the deal is, I have to keep the Corvette from impacting family finances. I have one in college, and a trip to NC for vacation, and I just bought wheels, etc.
So, I could sit tight, or, take a small loan that would be separate from other stuff, my own screwball accounting, I have a monthly Corvette budget.
BTW, the small loan factors in, a new door panel, new shocks, alignment, etc.

So, do you think the plenum and runners would be a noticable fix for the tpi intake?

I didn't mean to give the impression that I'm sitting here with a fouty in a bag, trying to figure out how to scratch up $300.

No, you can prime the pump with the intake off before installation, but I just don't know what the tool is. I have read two separate articles that discuss priming the pump this way but neither indicated specific tools.

I didn't pack the pump and its already sitting in the oil pan installed on the bottom of the motor.

I think I will use a pressure bleeder to get oil through the system prior to start-up, but that won't prime the pump.

Thanks

Small loan for car mods? I wouldn't admit that in public.

That is a good price though for those ported. I lucked out and got a unported high flow base for $65. But if you can't afford at least $300 to snap up a good deal, you've got no business modding your car. Don't forget all the b.s. costs like gaskets, lube, misc tools, and beer.

The IRL is going to NOPI for their marketing tactics. All they need now is an all ladies league. The IRLL.

Lots of T&A pics, booty shaking and foam in the pits!!!!

That'll make the Indy 500 fathers turn over in their graves.

Yes, the oil cooler has coolant pumped through it, unlike the trans cooler in your radatior which has atf pumped through it.

There isn't one. Because there is no conventional distrubitor, the oil pump is driven by an oil pump drive unit. Best thing is to dunk the pump in oil or pack with assembly lube. You can use an external pre oiler.

I'm still over there just a bit for real cheap and I do mean REAL CHEAP amusement. I'm only waiting to put my real avatar up again on the right post so I can get kicked off in style for something that is truly offensive next time....

What tool did you use to prime your LT1 oil pump?
Can I use a regular distributor shaft type primer or is there another method?

Optional engine oil cooler loop:

oil cooler outlet to oil cooler hard line
oil cooler hard line to heater outlet/waterpump inlet tee

Hold up,... you may be on to something. I was under the assumption that the oil flowed through the cooler, but after thinking about it for a second I realize that it would take alot more oil and my pressure would be alot lower if it did. So that Metal line leading into the oil cooler is actually a coolant line???? When I was under there changing the oil the other day, that line was soaked in antifreeze. I'll have to get the car up on some jacks (out in the F*ing COLD AGAIN) this weekend and take a look.

Thanks Central,

DG

Oil crossed 99. a barrel...An explosion in Big Spring, Texas refinery has spiked gasoline futures by 10 cents a gallon as well as oil has soared over 12% and gasoline futures by more than 15% and natural gas has surged over 14% since Feb. 1st.

The good news is the bad news isn't getting any worse.

Oil settled at 99.95...new high tomorrow?

A few more trades in the oil pit. The contract closed as 100.01 up 4.51 Thats a new all time high.

I've never seen one, there is a bunch though...

Radiator Loop:

Tstat to radiator.
Radiator to water pump.
overflow line from radiator neck to expansion tank

Heater Loop:

intake base to throttle body
throttlebody to heater inlet
heater inlet to core
core to heater outlet
heater outlet to water pump
steam line from intake baseplate to heater line

Optional engine oil cooler loop:

engine block to oil cooler inlet
oil cooler outlet to oil cooler hard line
oil cooler hard line to heater outlet/waterpump inlet tee

Geez am I getting the bug bad.
I'm even thinking about taking a small loan to get some of the stuff I want done. I hope the weather breaks soon, so I can start driving, maybe that will calm me down some.

So, I'm on that other forum, and there is a used Accel ported plenum and runners. Some guy bought it for his LT1, doh! Now he's selling it for $300 shipped.

Would this do me any good without a ported base? Would this be a good buy? Or would I be better off waiting and buying a MR.

My long term plan is to try to get to 300hp. I've done the catback. Eventually I want to do the intake, headers, chip, and maybe heads.

Just a thought on the coolant temp sensor. While you're in that deep, might want to consider a new one just for preventive maint. if it hasn't been changed lately. I assume a 84 has one in the same location as 89?

Joel

Good input, thank you!

Anyone have any sort of diagram that lays out where all the coolant lines run, and how the coolant flows through the engine on an 89. I have a coolant leak I can't seem to trace down, and I just want to make sure I am not missing any lines anywhere, (like the ones going to the throttle body on the LT1 just for example) This is of course an L98

Dan
