I used to clean my rusty chrome wheels with Coke and a Brillo pad when i was a kid.Worked like a charm. On batteries it would be an acid on acid application. What do our chemical engineers have to say about this? This out of practice Chemical Engineer says use baking soda. Baking soda is a base. Mixing a base with an acid produces water and a salt. Hence the need to rinse with fresh water. Coke contains phosphoric acid. It is a good cleaner, but still leaves you with a corrosive acid.

After a few days of the usual negotiating, I finally got the deal I wanted and had just left the car lot driving my first Corvette, the '95 coupe that I'm still glad to own. It was a cool but sunny morning here in NC and obviously I was on top of the world. That's when it came on the radio. The Columbia's data and communication had suddenly stopped and the worst was feared. And as we know, the worst indeed had occurred.

I had a neighbor cat piss on my pedals before.
Though it didn't kill the car, it sure did stink!

For those of you who know my plight, car has been in the shop for a while now, started off as ignition module, fixed that, then high voltage something or another, pointed to a wiring/opti problem, now car still in shop, idles for two whole hours and doesn't die. But, now it will start, run very rich, black smoke out right side, then die and sometimes won't even run at all. We are all confused and am wondering if a stopped up cat could very well be the problem? Car has 223K miles on it.... I think it would be easier for people here to help you if you updated your original thread rather than start a new one as the story continues to unfold. As I mentioned in previous threads, there were no references in the FSM to the DTC codes that you had previously mentioned. Also, the DTC codes I could find in the FSM that had anything to do with high voltage had nothing to do with the Opti. I'm no expert but from what you've mentioned so far, I don't think the shop that's working on your Corvette knows what's going on...

Had a cat stop up on my 93, the exhaust was cherry red from the manifold to the cat, car would start, idle for a few minutes and then start to miss. If i hadnt raised the hood after dark i wouldnt have known what it was.

Back in the late 60's and early 70's I used to wash big rigs. Sometimes when we cleaned out the cabs we found black and white photo magazines with women in compromising positions. Some apparent whacked out law required the eyes to be blacked out with a bar so you supposedly couldn't identify the poser. Just bringing up a blast from the past for some to remember and get a chuckle. And yes , like the A/C D/C album cover.

here is a fun website. www.bobistheoilguy.com Exactly what I was going to post. You'll get nearly as many opinions as replies to a question like this. This is the definitive source for scientific info, testing and etc. re/ automotive lubricants. Although it has nothing to do with your question and I have no experience with their motor oils, I've used their racing synthetic power steering oil in my Vette for several years now. No problems, no leaks and it cured the "cold morning rack" stiffness issue. Original rack with 125K miles on it.

My 86 would do a puff of smoke on startup. Valve stem seals. Has nothing to do with the oil. It did not use oil. I've used Mobil 1 in every vehicle I have owned for 25 years without one hint of a problem.
YMMV!

I thought you were talking about a constipated cat I would think when the cat got so constipated that it couldn't see, it would indeed stop the car. And go take a laxative or something..... Has anyone read codes on this car? A restricted cat can certainly cause performance problems but it doesn't explain the apparent rich condition on the right bank. Are you confident this shop knows what they're doing or are they just throwing parts at it?

Although I do agree with you, this set is only 15 months old or so, and already out and fwiw, I don't watch a lot of tv to begin with. So my price per day is quite high. Still, a set should last WAAAAAYYYYY longer than this. I've researched online and have found this to be a very common problem with my particular model......
Waiting on call from service center 4th day now....

I had an 86 L98 with 75000 miles that used Mobil 1 exclusively. When I tore it down to upgrade, it showed no wear and not a hint of a ridge in the cylinders. I asked this question because the guy I bought my C-4 from owned it since new and said he always used Moble 1 since new and it smokes on start. I had a BMW I ran 15 years on Moble 1 and the valve train was junk after 13800 miles. However when I bought it new that was the estimate the dealer gave me on the engine life. Seems I have seen lots of old Chevys go 200,00 miles on regular oil. I guess I will run moble 1 when I install my new engine if no one else has a problem.

Good info guys, thanks a lot.
My buddy just asked me, to go ahead and to order those from RockAuto. I always thought, the earlier hoods would weigh more because of their structural design, guess not.

Check this out...
http://www.c4guru.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=posting&mode=quote&p=17344 quote="ghoffman" We are addressing both the upper front and lower rear debate. The upper front mount distributes the load over a greater surface area so that the lilkelyhood of cracking is all but eliminated. The lower rear is a different story. We have no idea what the OE stud is actually made of (alloy wise) but assuming it is a decent alloy steel piece, it is marginal for the loads encountered. Tom Urban measured the piece off of his '95 and I modeled it with COSMOS. The load in this model is 2200 lbs and that is just at the elastic limit (yleld). History indicates that it has not been a problem, as C4's have been running around with coil overs for years, and to do 2200 lbs, you basically have to have slam the one side of the car down at 1.5 g's. On the other hand, the other mounts, can take much more than this and argues for a new design for long term fatigue. Comments are welcome as well as sarcastic remarks! Cheers, Gary " Well that's good to find out. Nice to have a real engineering working on this stuff! Look like if you go into coil bind before hitting the bump stops with the current setup, the mount will fail. Sound like time for a new mount.

I posted on this topic earlier, but I must have done something wrong....
Anyway, I am not a fan of either team, but my wife thinks Eli is cute. So she is behind NYG. I have this irrational dislike of Bill Belicheck. I am all for casual dress, but this guy looks like a slob, and seems devoid of a personality. I'll probably watch, but don't really care who wins. I don't know much about betting and stuff. Are the Pats highly favored to win?

Are we meeting at 9:30 or 10 AM? The CF forum says 10AM. Which is it? I'll be there or I'll call Scott and tell him I won't make it.

Oaklands, I'm just down the road from you. I suspect that I'll go again this year to the cruise in if only to see some old friends. Theres several C4 owners in this area but we are still greatly outnumbered by the C5/6 owners.

Because everything breaks and it's annoying. I wanted to do led taillights BUT i need to replace my window motor because the ribbon broke. When I first got the car bearing rod got damaged. My tranny had to be rebuilt, my radiator went out, water pump, windshield wiper springs got damaged(weird), digidash, gas gauge, speedometer, caliper, rim, exaust needed to be replaced so I just upgraded , Distributor, tires, sound system looked like crap cuz of aftermarket, my windshield got smashed in because someone dont like me, serpentine belt wore out, battery and alternator went out, coil, plug wires, plugs fuel pump, ......Either thei njectors, differental, timnig chain, one of them is about to go out and cause all hell to break loose.....I can feel it!! , 30 dollars is cheap.
Oh yea, brake booster and master cylinder went out as well, heats not working, A.C. has a leak, intake manifold gasket was bad, windshield wiper motor,.....I know its old but damn....Need I go any further??? Lately its been parked in my yard sitting....... I think the heater core is clogged, digidash has a bad solder, speedometer piece in the tranny is shot,. I don't want to be a pest and bother you with a timing chain. Gas is REALLY expensive.

That's why I like to flush the area well. Battery boogers will break down in water and rinse away, hopefully out the bottom and onto the ground. Does baking soda neutralize the acid? I used to clean my rusty chrome wheels with Coke and a Brillo pad when i was a kid.Worked like a charm. On batteries it would be an acid on acid application. What do our chemical engineers have to say about this?

Has anyone tried using Coke? I heard that dissolves the stuff.
I just brush em off with a brass brush and try to not get the debris anywhere important. The dried battery boogers are probably nasty concentrated stuff.

What displacement are you going with? Greater than 383?
That cam should make great power. In a stock cuber you'd have to rev it pretty high to see the power, and as as the cubes go up the RPM where that cam will make power will start to come down. If you're doing a 383+ with a great flowing set of heads, advancing the cam to try to get more bottom end power out of the engine in kind of creating a contradictory combo. It's like buying heads designed to make power at 5000+ RPM's, and then buying an intake designed to make power from idle to 4500; and hoping that you'll have the best of both worlds. Well, it doesn't work that way. You'll end up with the negatives of both components and the positives of neither. If you are going with more inches, I really doubt you'll need more bottom end power. Usually, the extra displacement really helps the low end torque; and even if the low end isn't satisfactory to you, there's other ways to compensate rather than advancing the cam and creating a mis-matched combo. Gears, converter, and a couple other things can really help create a car that's really fun at low RPM. What kind of power band are you looking for? And what displacement are you going with?

That's not too bad I guess. About 150 miles down 85.
Let me know if you want to do it and I'll try to schedule a time to come down. I guess you could come here and we could do it my garage, but I'd hate for something to happen and we get stuck for a few days waiting on parts or something. Why do you think you need to replace the timing chain?

I found the parts needed, I believe, will confirm later.
Why cant we just dril out the area that keeps getting worn in the support/housing area where the pins go through, and put real good bushings?
