[quote]Don't know if I'll be there, got the interior torn apart to replace the rear carpet. Never thought I would have to remove most of the interior and the roof to replace the rear carpet :banghead]Shouldn't have to. When you replace the carpet, you start at the rear anyway. Just remove the trim pieces , speaker grills and slide it right out. You may have to remove the halo panels if you need to trim the new carpet in that area. Also the trim pieces in the door jamb area.
Did my entire interior(twice, once in each car) in less than an hour.

Back on topic.

Frank, I'll try to make it out this year, did anybody BBQ last year?

Sorry I can't help on the MP3 mod, but Dr. Don did do the CDR upgrade to my head unit at the same time he repaired the CD & cassette operation.
He also repaired the amps in my front speakers when they started popping at a later date. Quick turn around both times and complete satisfaction with the service.
Loss of the cassette player in exchange for playing MP3 will come down to your call, but would trust the doc to do it with no hesitation.

Resized ImageAfter decommissioning this old girl I got out of the service.
Then joined the AF a few years later. Still in the AF. Funny part is, in both branches I've never had anything to do with aircraft. Its either been engineering or military police, go figure.

I'm getting close to sending my BOSE head unit to Dr Don for a modification. I want the CDR capability but man! $200 to play CDRs sounds extreme. Also, for another $100, they will disable the Cassette and install a jack for input of external devices such as MP3 players/IPODs.

My question is has anyone had this MP3 mod done to their Cassette player? I'd like to find out about it. I hate to lose the Cassette capability even though I almost never use that part of the radio.

Feedback appreciated.....

Billy

Tata Motors has unveiled the world's cheapest motor car at India's biggest car show in the capital, Delhi.

Resized Image

The vehicle, called the Tata Nano, will sell for 100,000 rupees or $2,500 (£1,277) and enable those in developing countries to move to four wheels.

The four-door five-seater car, which goes on sale later this year, has a 33bhp, 624cc, engine at the rear.

It has no air conditioning, no electric windows and no power steering, but two deluxe models will be on offer.

Whats this world coming to??????

Two deluxe models will be available?
One has seats and the other a radio?

[quote="bogus"]that is a real concern... however, a touch of threadlock or even RTV would solve that problem... and I would coat those threads in RTV... just because.

Not sure I,d do that mate cause I,d hate for them to lock up before they torqued up. Since they,re blind holes. If the threads are fine now they should be all good.. Just an observation.

Dan, you've got the right idea. Just take your time and research as much as you can. I had a great deal of research I had to do to make this swap work. It took some time just sitting there and trying different ideas out. I also had to think about the different configurations such as manual or auto. That is the whole point behind the C4orce project. To show how to do it and bring about the production of the pieces needed to make the swap work so that others could follow.

Well, I can't wait to see the next couple of issues; can't wait to see how the project turns out. I will keep your sn on the side... you can expect to here from me again. And if you do decide to produce a kit for this sort of swap, keep the little guy in mind (me); If you produced a scatter shield/bellhousing for the ZF I would buy it,.. I am sure others would too.

Good luck,

Dan

Ok, i have nothing against the electric water pump, i think its a great device.

HOWEVER, there is abit of "i think, therefore i am" going on here in this thread. While there has been many great points raised on both sides, i side with neither the electric nor the mechanical in terms of what is better. I dont care how any of you want to interpret my prevous posts, this is how i have felt from day dot.

There is no design fault with the rear pump seal. That is total rubish. Failure of this is lack of correct maintenance, or old age. As i said earlier, and ill go into it further now so you all understand (and im sure some of you allready do) if you dont add apropriate seal lubricant to your cooling system, expect seal failure. No 2 ways about it. Without the lubricant, seals will go hard, and that is when they start to fail. If you leave your coolant in there long engough to get a buildup, its been in way too long, or the concentrate is not right. Then most people are silly enough to pour some sort of alkali based cleaning agent in there, which not only damages the finish on the cooling system (especially aluminum) it also damages the seals.

The electric water pump can still leak from the rear, and it can also leak where it mates to the block just the same as a stock unit.

If you only get 125,000 miles from the factory original mechanically driven water pump due to rear seal failure, its hard to blame anything other than incorrect of incomplete mainentance.

Now im certainly not saying the electric waterpump isnt a good thing, and im not saying its not a good idea. I reckon it is, i wouldnt bother putting one on, but that is just me, and i maintain my cooling system alot better than most do.

As for the EPA issues, I am simply pointing out it is illegal. I would love them to revise this requirement, because the engines in trucks are so similar to cars anymore. That and many of the standards are the same. If you get a clever smog tech, they may notice it is a truck block. Also, if you are getting used, be sure to request a copy of the salvage title. Many states are cracking down on stolen used parts...

Andy,
Lets put it this way; I've taken the car to shops to have things done like tire changes, inspections, stuff I can't do myself. On one occasion I was asked who makes the car. The car says Corvette all over it; who the he** do you think makes it? These the types of guys were are dealing with up here in New York. Yea the state may be "cracking down" on smog and "stolen" parts but what happens behind closed garage doors is something different. In any event I am sure President Grant would persuade these guys to pass the vehicle if the issue did come up. I am not saying I condone this type of activity, but the reality is this is New York.

Also,... I don't quite understand... wouldn't a newer engine be more efficient and thus omit lower amounts of NOx?? You would think that a newer engine would probably be designed to decrease smog, even a truck engine?

DG

The bottom line is that it worked out, and for that I'm pleased for the OP. But changing the thread pitch from metric to 5/16 NC could only have done more damage than would have chasing the threads back to what they were already cut to. The two sizes are virtually identical as far as diameter goes, as has already been stated here. So making the slight change to the pitch would only remove that much more metal. This makes the bolt fit a bit looser and problems more likely in the future.

I wouldn't worry. IMO Autolite has made a top quality product for at least as long as my experience goes. And that's more decades than I care to disclose. I used a set of Autolite double plats in my stock blob sedan. After 70,000K miles, they still looked like new and the gap was still in spec.
I use standard Autolites in the Vette. That's because I like to keep them fresh anyway, so there's no use in buying plats for it since long life is their main benefit.

I was at the speed shop today. Speed Unlimited they are large mail order house just happens to be across the street from where I work. Anyhow the sales guy is usually pretty straight with me, and today he talked me out of buying the more expensive NGK Iridium plugs in favor of the Autolite Platinum AP-106. They were a hell of a lot cheaper than his NGKs and Accels. He claimed that for my mild buildup I would be just as well served with the standard platinum plug.
True? I figured I'd take his word - since he was down-selling, but he has done that on some other stuff like pushrods, which I had picked out some really expensive comp pushrods and he said I didn't need all that either.

Oh well - I like saving money as long as the parts do what I need them to do.

it makes me wonder... why would the mechanic go out of his way to use 5/16" bolts when 8mm should have been included??? In other words, it would not have surprised me if Accel included the wrong bolts.

I would have tapped them to the 5/16"... if for no other reason than to standardize all those bolts to standard measure.

What a day... So I'm gonna' have to say Good Evening instead of good Morning. The holidays spoiled me especially be off an extra three days being sick. Tonights the first night being home for two nights and finally got to work on the car! Yeah!

Today at lunch I ran across the street to Speed Unlimited and bought some stuff for the build (rocker studs, plugs & wires, wire looms) came home and got the left side head back on and torqued. Tomorrow night I'll get the other side and hopefully get the valve train back together!!!

Oh yeah, what's football? I haven't got to watch any for a while. Redskins for me

See you all here tomorrow

Cheers

All of you, quit your whining. You can pick your friends and your religion but regardless of where you might live now, you're pretty much stuck with your family and your hometown sports team. That means I'm saddled with, hands down, the biggest NFL disappointment this year - the Chicago Bears. Oh, how the mighty have fallen...

Whoa, cant wait until Friday. Then its just through the work day and WEEKEND!! I am going to replace my brake pads on Saturday. I am ordering a air horn system for my vette so I can have a horn again. (been driving with out one for almost a year now) While I am working on the vette I am going to see about the wiper problem and then I am going to clean the interior up. I think I might have one of my Buddy's over and get it knocked out faster.

That'll do - I worked on them when the D was a distant hope (in the late 1980s). There's nothing like a Tomcat ...

OK, if it has to be a land vehicle, I'm partial to the Abrams, the original Jeep, the Panther, and the Rolls-Royce armored cars from World Wars I & II
