has trouble estimating when to stop in a parking space before hitting the concrete stop with the plastic air dam. I've hit it more times than I care to remember. I guess if I drove it as a daily driver I'd be used to it but that long sloping nose is still deceptive to me, even after almost 6 years. The back end is no piece of cake either when backing up. I usually have more room back there than I think I have. The C4 Corvette has a feel all of it's own. Maybe I need to get some cameras installed.

Me. I have hit the parking stops so many times, my BMAD is getting to look like a crushed beer can.

I did more than once when I first got the car. Now I just err on the side of caution. And front or rear it's hard to judge just how close you are to something. But that seems to be the case with most newer cars, my sedan is no different. In the rear, trying to judge distance on most cars these days reminds me of the '67 and '69 Mustang fastbacks I had years ago.

I gotta be cautious pulling in, but backing in is as easy as it gets. I have a vert with a trunk rack. The spoiler on the trunk rack is the back of the car, easy to see. With the top down I swear I can almost reach the back of the car!

I used to hit the nose of my camaro back in the day all the time. But now I never hit. I would rather my rear end stick out then hit anything.

I haven't had this problem for quite a while. I learned a few years ago that if I watch the bumper disappear under the nose of the car I give it another foot of roll and I am good. Being 6'3" makes it easier for me to see over the front end as I sit a little taller in the saddle.

Yep, I am guilty too. It's just pretty deceiving on how close you actually are.
Also applies to the rear in the opposite way. Stopping while you still have plenty of room left, as Tommy said. This is why it always feels like the people behind you are tailgating your ass. There is more distance between you and them than you think. |

Me too,
The way to learn it is to pull up to the curb, when you see it start to disapear under the front STOP, get out then you'll know how much you need to pull forward. Do it a few times you'll get the hang of it. |

You could always buy a Laser Pro Park. I hear that they have an additional function as a police laser jammer.

I'm proud to say I haven't, but I learned from a friend's mistake. My friend Don was driving my friend Anthony's Vette with one of Don's old high school buddies. They were parking outside a bar, and Don's attention was captured by an attractive young lady.
He pulled a little too far into the space and CRUNCH! Greenwood air dam cracked and was ripped off the car on one side. They had to go buy some duct tape to get the car home. So I am super careful, and this is the first thing I tell people when I let them drive my car. The second is how to work the parking brake. |

After years of F-body and early vettes, I finally learned to stop at what I thought was half-way into a parking space. Still scrub once in awhile.

My wife ripped the BMAD off mine. She hit the curb square with the front edge of the scoop and it sheared the mounting screws right off. She hesitantly called me on the phone and asked me if she could put the "scoop" in the car to bring home. I said "WHAT"! She had a guy nearby help her get what was hanging, off the car. I was surprised but the air dam was not damaged much beyond the powdercoat scuffed off at the impact area and a slight buldge that I hammered out and touched up. I guess the cheeezy screws took all the impact!!!

[font=Tahoma:80af108b3c] [/font:80af108b3c] I actually very rarely hit my air dam from parking. All you have to do is use a reference point. In my case, I have found that relative to my seating position, when I am parking, if I look at my side view mirror and line up (through my line of sight) the curb or parking stone in the space next to me with the bottom of my mirror, I will be far enough foward without ever hitting the curb. I have had my Vette for 14 years and only replaced my air dam because o flying road debris shooting out from under another car and hitting it. But my air dam has always looked great. The only problem I have is occasionally steep driveways at shopping centeres when I have to make a left turn against traffic to enter the parking lot. If there is alot of on coming traffic, and i cant "ease" up the slope 'cause traffic is coming too fast, it will scrape a little..so the very bottom edge has little evidence of some scrapping, that's about it.

(yes I know..Park the Vette along side another car) See how far they are from the curb then line up your drivers door with there's. If they are a little closer to the curb than you would like just stay a little behind the other cars drivers door. This will work in your DD too. Just my idea Gary |

I've definitely done it, but doesn't seem to be a recurring problem.
In the Jeep, I have a tendency not to pull in far enough, and there's this huge gap between the fog lights and the front of the space. We're talking maybe 3 or 4 feet sometimes. It's really odd. Fortunately, the Jeepers isn't very long, so it doesn't stick out. |

Cant say ive ever had an issue. I drive my Corvette everyday and have done for 9 years. The only 2 cars ive had in 9 years are Corvettes. When driving the big Benz i had for a while, i backed it into a plastic rubbish bin, and a mail box. Couldnt see either of them and didnt know they were there. Being that i was in a Benz, there was not a mark on it
