Good Morning runner
I heard some discussion regarding grain pricing. Seems that there is substantial demand for some grains used to produce fuel, not food. Mabey its good for the environment to burn ethanol based fuels but at present it seems costlier. Great for the farmer, But, it costs a good bit of money and energy to produce these fuels that have fewer BTUs than oil based energy sources. Increasing soaring food costs for the love of cleaner alcohol based fuels may not be the way to go in my opinion. Again, in my opinion, solar may be the way to go. Using the grains to solve other problems like world hunger may be a reasonable idea.

Bernrnke warned that intensifying credit and financial market pressures are likely to restrain economic growth and left the door open for a sizable rate cut next month.

Israelis went on high alert as Hezbollah's leader warned of open war after the assassination of a top commander who also was one of worlds most wanted terrorists.

The Dow ind. fell 175.26 points to 12376.98 despite Bernanke's hint of more rate cuts.

The U. S. trade gap narrowed 6.9% in December to 58.8 billion dollars, its largest monthly decline since October 2006, as exports rose.

From the Wall Street Journal "cash crop....Heartland sees boom with grains in demand". Grain prices are surging to historic levels. Famers are making up now for past losses.

Have a great day.

We got one around here like that cept its still got the frame on it. It just sits there and from what I can tell it never moves. Paint is neglected badly and I am sure the tires are in worse shape.

Slalom, can you post a source for the info that I can try and interpret?
I couldn't find any specs on the Toshiba online.

This is the best I can find now

"The 200 liters of hot water and 700W power output are ideal for a family
of four. We have noticed the cost savings in the eight months since
installation. We look forward to having a low-cost, reliable fuel cell."

From "Fuel Cells: Compact Home Power Plant"

FWIW, here is some data about the Honda FCX Clairity, a fuel cell powered
sedan discussed in the Mar, '08 issue of C&D.

FC output: 100 kW
e-Motor: 134 hp 189 lb/ft
Curb wgt: 3,600 lbs
Fuel cap: 5.3 kg (in 45 gal tank)
Range: 270 mi
EPA City/Hghwy: 49/46 m/kg

On a '96 I'm not sure what you might run into re/ the crank sensor. But I do know that if necessary, it can be eliminated and programmed out of the PCM. Other than that, once you eliminate the water pump drive, you can use the Cloyes 9-3145 which is under $100. It's what I have in my '95.

...Well now I'm confused. if you go to summit and check the specs for a 94-96, it sends you to the 9-3151 which is the $355 one. And in the notes section says
"Timing chain has a 1/2 in. pitch. Can be installed on Generation 1 LT1, if the OptiSpark is updated to the new, second design. This will require new ignition, new front cover, and cam change to second design cam, the nose is different. The older OptiSpark"
It makes no note of the crank sensor issue. Why would you even bother with this one in the first place? It sounds like you have to spend more than just the $355 to make it work.Is the one you noted (9-3145) just a heavy duty direct swap in for the 94-96 LT1? "cause if it is, sounds like a no brainer. But Summitt's site says that this part (9-3145) is for Gen I engine family and "won't clear the plastic timimg cover" ?
WHAT GIVES?

Thank you, i added it to my favorites. with the 64cc heads, it would jump to 10.2 to 1. and with the 58cc heads it goes to 11.01 to 1. i used a .024 gasket for this calculation, whats the thickes i could get? probably need a cam with alot of over lap to bleed off some of that pressure, huh?

Here's some shots of the super spindles that I got from www.summersbrothersracing.com

I worked them over last summer to get these things into production. They are almost a stocked item now, less than 10 days to get you a set if you want them.

The new, improved, super spindle:

Resized Image

I know it doesn't look like much, but once I get the stock spindles out of my car, I'll post some comparison shots. What they've done is build a larger shaft out of (if memory serves, but don't hold me to it) 303M material. The larger shaft is 30 splines on the outboard side, and 31 on the inboard side. The stock unit is 24 splines outboard, and cast into the yoke.

They also modify the wheel bearing to accept the new larger shaft:

Resized Image

Without the flash:

Resized Image

The super spindle and bearing next to one another:

Resized Image

One more shot. This shows the yoke broached for the 31 spline shaft:

Resized Image

I'm pretty excited about these. Prior to these, I was breaking a spindle every 4 passes at the drag strip. I have since gone to a much more forgiving clutch, but having these in the rear will give me a ton more confidence in the car.

That being said, they seem to be good folks. I bought my current rotating assembly from them. Price, service and communication were all good.

I don't see why they wouldn't work. It's pretty hard to tell without a real picture though.

You could probably get away with the stock springs if they were pretty new. Since more than likely they are 20 years old, I would replace them with new springs. I like the LT4 springs from GMPP.

any idea of what the compression ratio would be if you took one of these 9.0 motors and put the 58 cc heads or 64 cc heads on it?

No problem. Theres no need to apologize. No one can be expected to like every vette out there. I just would hate to see a lot of bashing across the generations here. I see it over at CF all the time and it really is sad to watch. I guess over there having a vette is just not good enough...its the "my vette is better than yours" mentality with some.

Anyway, were all good bro..don't sweat it

C4, I have an LT-4, running a 4.09 final drive ratio. The acceleration will flatten your eyeballs, and at 2000 RPM in 6th gear it cruses at about 75 MPH.

However…with the price of petrol in this country, I’m considering going up to a 3.90 final drive. With all the torque I have, I don’t think it will matter much to the kid in the Mustang.

Mine is a weekend toy, set up to go around corners, but I’ve been playing with various ratios…even in the gear box.
The formula goes like this:

RPM
X Gear Ratio
÷ Final Drive Ratio
X Tyre circumference (inches)
÷ 63360 (inches per mile)
X 60 (minutes per hour)
= MPH

I made an xl spreadsheet, so I could just plug in different ratios to compare the results. I'll e-mail it to you if you wish.

CentralCoaster’s right…It wouldn’t be fun if it was easy.

Have fun!

Admittedly, had I noticed it was posted in our new C3 section, I would have just kept my mouth shut, as I should have anyway. While I've never really desired a C3, I truly don't disrespect them and see some that I think are pretty cool. In hindsight it was a regrettable post and I apologize.

I've been trying to follow along here, but I slept through a lot of science class, especially if there was a movie. So far what I've got is:

1). I'm going to continue to enjoy water from my RO system, as I prefer it to water that tastes like poo, and I don't care for gray icecubes or replacing my coffee maker annually

2). There may or may not be rubber ducks in my radiator

I believe the valve is normally closed. It opens with vacuum. You have three choices:

1. Live with it

2. Install a manual valve

3. Troubleshoot and fix the problem which usually involves some dismantling of the dash while standing on your head!

Pianoguy, thanks for the endorsement of Cloyes. I’ve used their timing sets on fast revving Ford small blocks without problems.

Back in the 80s, I raced a Ford stock car on dirt for a few years. I used a Cloyes DR in my 351 Cleveland engines. Although I used more than one engine over those years, the same Cloyes timing set was used over and over again in each engine. Needless to say, when I need a timing set, it's always a Cloyes.

Correction, turns out the trans is in fact remanufactured by ZF themselves in 1994. Looks brand new though. Wouldn't surprise me if all the remaining ones are this way. I imagine the supply of new transmissions was used up long ago.

If someone like ZF is gonna do a limited run of 60,000 transmissions, I presume they'd only have a few thousand surplus for factory replacement, right?

Did they tell you up front that it was a reman?

I must've voted at least 12 times today - almost enough to qualify as an honorary resident of Chicago

Thanks for the feedback guys.
Notorious, I was not sure what you thought could interfere with the crank sensor. So, I took a walk out to my shop…You’re right. A double row sprocket might move the reluctor ring out of sight of the sensor. I’ll take some careful measurements before I make a decision.

Bogus, you mentioned “other differences”, am I overlooking something else?

Pianoguy, thanks for the endorsement of Cloyes. I’ve used their timing sets on fast revving Ford small blocks without problems.

Thanks again! I’ll confirm with my favorite source for such information…Summit Racing…and let ya'll know what I find.

no matter how you cut it, it's a lost opportunity to do something neat.

Time to bring this up again. We're now tied for #4, although it's taken longer than it should have to get there. Vote daily guys and gals. The link is right in the top left corner of most pages here. Also after voting, click back here through the link there. We get credit for that too. Can someone who hasn't voted today please do so? It'd be nice to take official possession of 4th place, so we can start gunning for #3.

Actually, no you shouldn't have. I think the last time I was there was probably 2 years ago, maybe a little less. I think I have a total of 3 posts there. It is a nice site though. Very well done. I stuck with CF at the time, but maybe I shouldn't have.

If it was any other generation, it'd bother me a lot more. I don't mean to piss of any C3 fans, but it's just an "oh well" to me.

hmmmmm.....ok.

the more I think about it, why did you have to come in here and say that?
if you didn't mean to "piss" any of us C3 owners off, then what purpose did this serve? While this site was started for die-hard C4 owners, it is also littered by other generation owners and will be even more so soon.

I would hope that we could all have respect for other generations of vettes regardless of how they came from the factory. A lot of people put tons of blood, sweat, and tears into their "babies" and do take offense when someone slams them. While I am not pissed that you said it, I am baffled as to why you did.

You also don't want the rear calipers. They are a lot of modification/hassle to get them to work with the C4 parking brake, and most say they aren't much of an improvement anyway. The fronts are the ones that matter. On top of that you will need that bracket mentioned above.

I'm halfway into the process of doing mine - I'll have some pics once it's done. Not for a couple weeks, though.

I'm not a C3 owner, but I think it's too bad. There are a few C3s sitting in driveways where I work under piles of snow. One I can think of has a blue tarp over the t-tops and flat tires. I'd love to knock on the door and offer to buy one, but the wife says one vette is enough (although she loves it, too)
