If you're just really hooked on CDs, another option is to install a six disk CD player. I installed one in a previous C4 behind the passenger seat. The particular model I had was the RF modulator type that "broadcast" to an unused FM frequency. This particular model spliced into the antenna cable and the fidelity was excellent (unlike some of the mp3 RF modulators that do not have a hard wire connection to the antenna line). All the wires you need to access are in the cargo bin behind the passenger seat and can be reached by existing cutouts already there. All you have to do is pull back the carpet a bit and pass the wires through. As I mentioned in my previous post, I'm using an Ipod now but I still have the CD player and if you're interested, you can have it for a little more than a song...

I've taken some advice from the forum and have installed the cassette feeder with IPOD lead for playback. It works great and I think I'll be happy living with this setup. Lots of money saved.....

Thanks for the advice guys. Upon inspection of the coolant temperature sensor, I found that it somehow got smashed . The pigtail connector was hanging and the sensor itself had no pins. I removed the broken sensor and replaced it. Checked the pigtail.. all looks well. I connected it up and cleared the codes. Hopefully those other codes are from a while ago. So far, after a short ride, no new codes, no MIL. If they pop back up I will print up a flow chart and start diag. Thanks for the tips,

Dan

Id be curious to hear about throwing some air to pop it out, also.

Took my chances and didnt reverse the seal on the one I put in last year.

What about the clutch master, any problems there also?

Yep that's right in the heart of the problem time period. Get comp to replace them, sell the new comps, and get the PACs.

How do you remove the rubber boot "retainer"? Do you simply pry back the tabs?

Could you apply air pressure to the hydraulic port to force out the piston?

I remember this thread from CF, but I refuse to go back to see how it ended- is there any markings or something to differentiate slaves that have been assembled correctly? Or do they still come off the shelf backwards?

Nice choice, those look badass on any C4.

I was hoping for some vids spliced in there... You know how to right?
Oh yeah, I know how to, just didn't have any handy believe it or not. I had too many pics anyway, so wasn't any room for vids.

Car sits 2 inches higher on the passenger side rear?

I've been through quite a lot with my rear end. I've broken 6 or 7 outer stub axles, a half shaft, installed a spool, 4.09 gears, and a few other things. A few weeks ago I installed new rear knuckles, a new drivers side half shaft, and new KYB shocks. Once I was done I took the car to work and aligned the rear.

The car sat high for a day or so, then the drivers side settled down to what I would consider normal ride height, or about 1.5 inches between the fender and tire.

The passenger side has never settled down, and is still 3 inches or so above the tire.

Before I did the shocks, the car sat a little crooked in the same manner, but I was able to correct it by tightening/loosening the monoleaf bolts. I didn't have to get crazy with anything on the leaf, and both nuts were still close enough to allow use of the original cotter pin holes. There's no way I can correct this with the monoleaf bolts now, it's way too far out of whack.

I haven't had a chance to go under the car and start to measure things, but does anyone have any suggestions before I go out there? The monoleaf took a pretty good whack when I broke the half shaft, could a damaged monoleaf cause this problem? I could see a damaged moneleaf allowing the car to sit low, but high?

At the very least you should get Comp to replace these springs, even if you plan on running the PAC's.

Here's even a better PAC spring.

A long, long time ago there was another problem with the comp beehives for which the blue stripe information is relevant. It is not relevant for the recent problems.

If yours were bought around last Spring-Summer, then they are probably not part of the more recent problem, either, unless they were sitting on a shelf for a while.

The problem springs were generally installed around mid 2006-early 2007. The issue came to a head around Spring-Summer 2007 just because it took that long for the number of failures to become so overwhelming that Comp couldn't ignore it any more.

Well, that is good to hear they will get replaced by Comp.

They were purchased right around that time, so it fits. Thanks for the info!

EDIT: I did a little searching about this, since I obviously had no idea (I did not spend too much time on the forums for the last 12 months or so) and it sounds like the "revised" or "fixed" 918 had a blue stripe painted on them. Mine have that stripe! So obviously they are not fixed...

Sounds like getting the originals from PAC is the way to go. I'd gladly pay extra to a company that is not willing to sacrifice quality for a few bucks, especially on something as critical as valve springs! Who knows how many little bits of spring steel got washed through the engine when the springs snapped...

EDIT 2: I jumped the gun- The blue stripe 918s were the springs failing this spring/summer...

O2 bungs aren't too hard to find. Many exhaust shops keep them in stock. Or you can make your own. All that's really needed is an 18mm spark plug tap. Same thread pitch.

Thought this might help some body, some time. My 89 had a "itchy" tach reading, not being really steady. I finally found a diagram clearly showing the tach filter had to have a ground. I did not know this, so I re-grounded my today and it solved the problem.

HOW TO: Repair defective ZF6 clutch slave cylinders.

Most/all of the ZF6 clutch slave cylinders produced over the past 5 years or so are defective from the factory. The seals are installed backwards which results in incomplete clutch disengagement, and leaks.

The photos below, starting top-left, show how it's repaired. Bottom-right is the seal installed correctly and waiting for reassembly.

You can potentially damage the seal during this repair. If it makes you uneasy, send it to ZFdoc.com, he'll do it for you for a nominal fee. The snap ring groove may tear it as you're pulling it out. It may be possible to deburr it first, although I didn't try.

The piston is very difficult to remove from the slave. I tapped it against a block of wood to get it most of the way out, then pulled it the rest of the way using some snap ring pliers to grip the cup of the piston.

DO NOT put any tools on the ID surface of the aluminum cylinder. This is a finely machined hydraulic surface and you don't want to scratch it.

Just checked in a couple of hours ago.

Jr,
They have fuel injection on some of the engines.
The aerobatic ones in particular.
Carbs aren't to crazy about being asked to work inverted ;)

That's one of the planes they put them on.

They also make the only FAA certified piston helicopter engines.

I don't know if it's digital.
I'm really looking forward to checking this out tomorrow.

Bill,
Still know anyone there?
I'll tell them you said hello.

You don't need to compress it.

Seperate both knuckles from the lower ball joints and the spring should slide in. If it doesn't clear the ball joints, try removing the entire lower control arm on one side.

Then when it's in place, put a floor jack under the lower control arm, jack it up until you can bolt the shock in place. The front shocks limit the suspension travel and also act as the bump stops.

It isn't easy to tell if there was a question in that mess or not. What is it that was recalled? The 1984 for fan problems? CentralCoaster has the right information for the wrong car. The A/C switch CC speaks of informs the ECM in later cars that the A/C is on. Then the ECM turns on the fan. In the 1984, the ECM plays NO part in the fan operation. The 1984 fan works in a similar manner as the aux fan on the 1985 through 1989 cars. I have already posted the cause and the cure for this fan that won't shut off.

RACE ON!!!

Yes, you are correct. Ignore my post it doesn't apply to 84s apparently.

You've got plenty of garage space, except you've got it filled with junk.

John, increasing flow will always increase heat transfer in the radiator! I don't see how there's a maximum transfer ability. I see how you do start approaching one as that characterstic curve levels out, but notice even at 100% flow the heat transfer is still increasing.

You also alluded to fluid energy = heat. I would agree that an overrunning waterpump will add some heat to the fluid, but it can't be much. How efficient is it? 85%? How much HP does it take to turn? The remaining HP is going to the belt, bearings or fluid temps.

How does the water flowing through the radiator add any substantial heat? It can't lose kinetic energy, because it can't slow down in a virtually incompressible system. Does it lose pressure energy? Even if that added heat to the fluid, it would probably increase heat transfer. The hotter that coolant is, at every point in the radiator, means more heat transfer. I'm not sure where you're going with this. But I honestly didn't read all your posts either.

As stated there were a boatload of 918 spring failures. Lots of threads on it around last Spring-Summer. A lot of people switched to the PAC springs as a result.

Comp eventually acknowledged the problem (several months after people started bringing it to their attention) and should replace them for you.

My 94 has one rear o2 sensor, and although not really needed I had a bung installed behind the cat to install the sensor. No extension needed.

Oh, I'm running EM headers.

I thought there was a shortage for awhile where the warehouses were empty, and one of them was discontinued. Not sure if this was in response to the defective manufacture or not.

Either way I'd pull your new one apart and check and report back to us.

If you need tips on flipping the seal, let me know. In fact I'll start another post on it for everyone to see.
