Fellow Guru's I think it would be interesting to hear about the different parts of the country (World?) we all live in and our opinions of our current home towns. I bring up this topic because I do not plan on staying where I am forever and the wife and I pillow talk about where we think we would like to move to. I've traveled all over the continental US/Canada and believe I will probably land somewhere around the Carolina's/Virginia in the future. Of course, who knows... It's the cold, dreary winters that make us want to move. I've always hated the winters and this time of year I dream of moving someplace warmer. The older I get the harder the cold weather is to tolerate.

I'll start:

Colchester, Vermont:

Colchester is a suburb of Vermont's only "City" Burlington.

Pro's: Beautiful Scenic landscape, Low crime, Strong Education, Arts & Entertainment. A great place to grow up/raise a family, four true seasons.

Con's: Expensive, high taxes, high housing costs (compared to average income levels) lack of good jobs (or jobs that even pay well in general) Very cold winters, many weeks at a time without sun, crazy politics.

I'm fortunate to have a good job (the only reason we are still here) but, employment opportunities in general are very bleak and cost of living is very high. While the summers are absolutely beautiful they are too short. Winter is too long and it's very cold and depressing.

What's it like where you live?

We live in Torrance, CA. It is located south of Los Angeles on the coast of the Santa Monica Bay.

Our house is only 1.5 miles from the bay!

It is expensive to live here. But the schools are VERY good. There are lots of things to do and the area seems rather resistant to the economic slump.

The upside to living in LA is you will NEVER be bored. The downside is that you will never be bored...

The weather is nearly perfect. Where we live is right against the coast (as stated above), but the coast here brings a nearly constant ocean breeze. The Pacific is a rather cool ocean here and that leads to very temperate temps. At the same time, we get this thing called the marine layer. Or, more accurately, the June Gloom! It is an inversion layer that creates a thin cloud cover - and sometimes heavy fog - that keeps the sun at bay for a major chunk of the day.

Only when the Santa Ana wind is blowing in does the temps go really up.

Otherwise, we don't need AC around here. Seriously.

The downside is a rather whacky political thing and a statewide economic ick... the tax rates around here can be killer.

I used to live in Delaware... and wouldn't recommend that to my worst enemy.

If you are looking for another area, check in to Jacksonville FL. I didn't like VA, the state taxes and regulates everything... NC isn't much better climate wise than VT... SC is nicer, I think.

I've had the pleasure or disdain of living in several different places. I have yet to find the perfect place.

Texas, Houston - Flat, ugly, hot, humid.
Texas, Dallas - See Houston minus humidity
VA, Richmond - Hot summers, cold winters with minimal snow, occasional ice.
Mississippi - Love the rolling hills and the country side. Hot, full of uneducated poor people. Hot, milder winters, occasional ice.
Alaska, Anchorage - Awesome summers, lots of fishing, hiking hunting. Winters, do you even have to ask...?
Washington, Seattle - Phenomenal summertime, lots to do. Winter, damn it starts in Oct and goes till the end of June, then the sun is out and the rain stops. Full of hippies and liberals.
Oregon, Portland - See Seattle, but less to do.

With that said, I've traveled extensively as well. Lot's of places I would like to stay for an extended period of time. But live... I dunno.

I grew up in Boston but left in 1974 to check out other places thanks to the USAF. Lived outside San Antonio. It has a nice Riverwalk. Winters can be strange. 38* in the early AM 78* at 1:00 PM. Summers are oppresively hot. They get tornadoes and thunderstorms seasonally. Moved to South Florida in 1979. Winters are beautiful with an occasional cold day (mid to high 30's). There are pretty much only 2 seasons. 7 months of hot and muggy, 5 months of nice mild weather. We get a lot of sunshine, raging thunderstorms in summer and an occasional tropical storm or hurricane. Lived in the Homestead area, 25 miles south of Miami, for almost 30 years now. It was a small farming community known as the winter bread basket. Today there is still lots of agriculture but lots more people. Good paying jobs are hard to find. The good: We have a beautiful racing facility, an Air Reserve Base, a smalltown feel with all the amenities like restaurants, a movie theatre, hospital, shopping, home centers, grocery stores, schools, a community college and 2 national parks. 45 minutes to Miami (north) or Key Largo (south). I'm 15 minutes to Biscayne Bay to the east and if I drive 15 minutes west I'm in The Everglades. I must like it. I'm still here.

There's no such thing as a perfect place to live.
I grew up on the east coast in Pa. Beautiful state, great scenery, killer back roads for crusin'.
Even when I was a kid, I couldn't stand the weather there, high humidity in the summer, don't see the sun for weeks at a time in the winter, fall's nice though. Politics and taxes are terrible, you have to go to a socialist "state store" to pick up a bottle of wine.

I did my last 2 years of college in Colorado, I could definately live there but it's a tad laid back and the winters are a bit long.

I'd been in Reno/Lake Tahoe before and when I went for a career change, I told the headhunter I was working with to find me a position there.

I've been in Reno 25 years, corporate pressured me quite a few times to move, usually to the SF Bay area, and I refused.
The best things here are: NO humidity, the heat index is always lower than the temperature, most days in the summer, you don't need a/c, the breeze by 7p.m. is actually cold.
We do get winter but most of the snow stays up on the mountain, there's always some day each month that hit high 50s/lo 60s. Even when it's cold in winter, the sunshine heats things up, my living room with big windows can hit almost 80 degrees with the furnace off.

You have to be a sunshine freek to live here, from May to Oct., it may rain 3-4 times.
Low taxes (no income tax) but higher house prices.
There's an amazing amount of things to do, something's going on every weekend, way too much to list, never boring.

And, Lake Tahoe's 20 minutes, beautiful in the summer killer sking in the winter. Bright sunshine at the ski lodge at lunchtime, everyone sheds ther jackets and gets a suntan.

Not too many places where you can snow ski in the morning and go offroading on the bikes in the afternoon.

Bright sunshine, no humidity and views like this:

I lived pretty much all over Pennsylvania most of my life. Overall it was enjoyable. I always hated the humidity, but always loved the fall foliage.

Been in Southern Colorado since '96.

Weather is sunny nearly 300 days a year with minimal to no humidity. Hot Rods are big out here. You see them about every other day. A few Low Riders running around. Lots of Vettes if the weather is sunny and warm.

We only seem to have two seasons. Summer and Winter. Summers can get above 100 degrees, but the lack of humidity makes it nearly tolerable.

Winters are generally mild. Snow overnight, melting off the next day for the most part. The education system is horrible. I was told just the other day that our state has a 50% drop-out rate. That blows my mind.

If you like Mexican food, this place is Mecca. I didn't care for spicy foods when I moved here from PA, but I've converted.

I purchased my home brand new in 1998. It is a 3 bedroom 2 bath rancher. 1100 sq.ft. with a 2 car attached garage, 1,000 sq.ft. unfinished basement with 1/3 acre lot in a nice neighborhood. Cost $98,000 new. Appraised at the beginning of the crash for $103,000. So we haven't gained much, but our area is developing quickly, do maybe there's hope for some gains if the economy recovers.

Overall, I dig it, but I would prefer a more educated population. Lots of migrant workers and, apparently high school dropouts running around. I have nothing against them at all, but my wife and I have trouble finding friends with similar interests, values and work ethics.

Plenty of things to do if you don't mind driving for a few hours. Denver, Vail, Breckenridge and the like are 2-5 hours away.

I like it here well enough. But my wife wants to move back to PA and live closer to family. For me it will mean walking away from the client base I've worked hard to create, but she never liked it here and has put up with it for thirteen years. If she becomes a store manager for Wal-Mart, I can almost be a kept man, so I can start my business elsewhere.

Overall, I would recommend Colorado, but probably a suburb of Denver, like Aurora over Pueblo.

Its hard to say exactly where my city is... but my house is located in a really small little town about 30 miles east of Washington DC right on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay. The town has a lot of history and was a product of the turn of the century (1900) Washington DC people looking for a place to get away from the city. They ran a train line to Chesapeake Beach and built hotels and gambling on the water front. After the advent of the automobile and a bridge linking western shore of MD to the eastern shore people could easily travel to the Ocean shore instead of the bay. Therefore the town soon was forgotten and wasn't until the past ten years or so, that is has mad a little comeback. We still have a hotel and slot machines but it's the fishing, crabbing and boating that make this area beautiful. I live a few blocks from the Chesapeake and love being so close.

The Baltimore / Washington / Annapolis Metropolitan areas have really grown into one large city as the three have sprawled to eachother's boundries. I grew up in the center of the triangle and lived here my whole life except for 14 years in a little town in South Carolina.

Pros and Cons of Washington Metro Area

Pros

* Many things to see and do...
* A fairly strong job market even in today's economy
* housing market slow but not dead
* Federal Government keeps people employed
* 20 minutes and you are away from the city and in some of the most beautiful rural areas in Maryland and Virginia
* The Chesapeake Bay
* Milder winters than up north

Cons

* Too many things to see and do
* If you don't have a security clearance job market is tough
* Hot and humid in the summer
* Slush and ice in the winter
* At least an hour long commute can be expected in most areas but perhaps even longer

Overall I love where I live but am only staying to be around my parents and the job market right now. I plan to move south again in the future, just don't know when. I loved Aiken, SC when we lived there. No regrets at all. However, I think we will be looking in the Charleston, Savannah or Jacksonville areas in the future.

We have moved about the eastern US. When we were younger the Philadelphia area was good, but way too crowded and expensive now. Lived in NY state (near West Point) for a couple years and hated it, taxes, taxes, more taxes and crappy weather. Then Cincinnati was OK, not exciting at all. Good place to live and a great downtown area, just not for us. On to Cleveland area. We lived in a little city called Valley City, Medina County, sw of Cleveland for many years and loved it. The only negatives were the long winters and that the Browns can't seem to win anything. Otherwise Cleveland has a lot to offer, much more than people give it credit for having.

Now we are in NW Georgia, about 40 miles nw of Atlanta and love it here. The weather is near perfect as far as I am concerned. Summers are not any hotter than up north, humidity isn't bad and the winters are mild and short. Atlanta is close enough if we want to go into the city, but far enough away that it doesn't impact things around home.
Lot of lakes, good fishing and hunting, but even better there are a lot of smooth, hilly, and twisty roads all around. Taxes are very reasonable, down side is most of the schools in Georgia just don't seem to do a good job, but I think that is primarily Atlanta and south GA. Bottom line is this is a good place to live and great place to retire.

I lived in Richmond VA from April 1995 to April 1996. A blip, really, but a learning experience.

I was at VDOT as a consultant... unless you were a grad of VMI, you were dog shit... unless you were old south, you were dog shit... This means that the perception of me being a northern Carpet Bagger didn't help one bit.

The year I was there was extreem... the summer of 1995 was HOT - upper 90s day in/day out... then winter hit early with a surprising thunder snow in mid-Decemeber. We were hit with three more snows that winter. I left that spring... but the Richmond race in March was delayed by an overnight snow fall.

Wow this has turned out to be a great thread! Interesting reading for sure!

Bogus in the early 00's I used to stay three weeks a year in El Segundo with Frank Honsowetz and his wife Tony. Tony was the Motorsports Manager for Hyundai America. Frank was an institution at Nissan, running their Motorsports program for decades. He's still involved in local racing maybe you've met him at the track? El Segundo, Long Beach, Torrance, all very nice areas for sure! I loved visiting LA but I don't know if I could live there coming from such a rural area.

Bill - Reno is beautiful as well. A guy I work with (the guy who is connected to Abaris Composites) has a girlfriend who lives in Reno. He loves it out there. He's out there visiting right now.

I've been to Florida and always enjoyed myself. I think it's a beautiful state and one I think I could seriously consider living in. I've been to Ft.Lauderdale (in July) and really likes it there. I'm going to Miami next summer. May go to Miami this winter for a short trip as air fair via Jet Blue is ridiculously cheap from Burlingon.

I have a friend who lives outside of Richmond, VA and loves it. My in laws used to live in Staunton, VA which we visited and really enjoyed. The trees and mountains made it feel closer to VT which we are used to.

I love Vermont but, the older I get the cold really bothers my body. Plus, my wife gets bad seasonal depression during the winter due to cold/gloom/lack of sun (it runs in her family). The worse is when it's below 20 degrees, then below zero/singal digits for weeks at a time. that's friggin' cold!!.

Come'n Brian... you ain't older than me, so quit whining about the cold.

What got me about Delaware winters was the constant gloom. Everything was dead, we would be promised snow and get a cold rain. Or it would be 55. Just not a nice winter forecast. That is what depressed me. I think I could deal with a REAL winter, if I had projects and a place to do them (think a real garage). I didn't have that in Delaware.

I came from a very rural area - central Delaware. I didn't have a problem adjusting to LA. Infact, it fits me quite well.

I haven't met your friends yet... sad... They run in slightly different circles than I do.

I live in the bread basket of the world, western Kansas. I like it here because it's rural, basically a good work ethic of the people, low crime, cheap to live, good schools. Taxes are low (I pay $235 personal property taxes on all three of my cars, 01 Vette, 03 Bonneville and 99 Silverado), my house is valued at $200K and the taxes on it are $1200/year.

The biggest thing against it is 4 hours to any city of any size (3 1/2 to Peublo, CO, 4 to Wichita, KS, Colorado Springs and Amarillo, TX, Denver is about 5, and a little over 6 to Kansas City where we have two daughters and their families and 5 grandkids). We make to trek to KC about every 4-6 weeks. We can't really move there because we have one daughter and family (3 grandsons) local.

When we moved out here, the wife didn't like it (too far away from her family), I told her that we would stay only for a 3 or 4 years, to gain some experience (teaching) and we would move on, but after 30 years we're still here. The place just grew on us.

Weather typically isn't bad summers can get into the upper 90's to lower 100's, but the humidity is low so that makes it bearable. Winters can get pretty cold, 0* and below, but typically low teens are the norm. It is dry, average annual rainfall is around 12"/year. So there are not a lot of trees, wide open spaces. Being able to see 7-10 miles is not out of the ordinary. There is a little town 7 miles away and we can see the grain elevator from our house.

Some of you guys mentioned low humidity. I wouldn't be supprised that what you consider low, I would call fairly high. :toothy5: People here start to bitch about high humidity when it hits 25%.

I live in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, a suburb of Akron, and 35 miles south of Cleveland. The population of Cuyahoga Falls is about 50k.
Living in Cuyahoga Falls is much like having a Corvette, it's a love/hate thing.
I love the seasons... but sometimes hate them, (winter can be too long).
I love being close to Cleveland for sports teams, and events... well, the hate is obvious, just watch the Browns, if you have a strong stomach.
The traffic is good here, pretty light for my 5 mile commute.
Housing prices are low here. My 2100 square foot house sold for $192k 5 years ago. It's worth about $175k now. But, I live between 2 parks, with no houses to look at out my back window, I wouldn't trade that for a lot of money.
The bad side of cheap housing is I can't retire, sell the house, buy elsewhere and have lots of money in my pocket.
Schools used to be excellent here, I grew up in this town. Now they are simply good, and sliding, but I think that's a national trend.
Deep roots. My parents lived here, 3 of my 4 siblings are in this city, with the 4th being one city over. We all know the love/hate involved with being close to family!

And as someone stated earlier, I have Buckeyes, beer, and a Corvette. My life is pretty darn good.

Holy Crap!!! That's low taxes!!! We pay 7% of the value of the vehicle for registration (book value, not what you actually paid for the vehicle so a you can get raped on a rusty beater or a car that needs work you bought cheap).

Our condo is valued right around $200,000 and property taxes are $3500/year. We don't even own any land!

I spent the first 16 years of my life in Queens Village, New York. I could never go back.

From 16 to 40, I lived in Northeastern Pa. Cold, grey, and dark. Summers are hot and humid, and winters are cold, and quite snowy. I thought it was bad, and it is.
Then I moved to Manchester, New Hampshire. Housing, taxes, and traffic are brutal. Although it is sunnier than Pa, is snowed like hell the 2 years I was there. I doubt I could have grown to like it, and even if I did I could not afford to buy a home there.

Moved back to Northeast Pa at 42 (I am 43 now), and plan to be here a while before I head somewhere sunnier and warmer.
My wife's father is ill, and my wife and daughter do not want to be uprooted again, especially now.

(I just re-read this and I never realised how much I hat living in Dayton, Ohio.)

I've lived in the Dayton, Ohio 'burbs all my life. at one time, Dayton was a great town. We had ALOT of general motors factories. I used to joke that I was one of the five guys in town WITHOUT GM discount. We also had National Cash Register (NCR). When my dad was working in the toolroom, there were as many as 6500 toolmakers at NCR. Now, NCR has
decided to move to Atlanta at the whim of the CEO.

Like alot of us in the rust belt, I could go on, but for the sake of bandwidth, I'll stop.

As for the weather here, it sucks. Humid as hell, allergens everywhere, sinus problems for all. If I were to suddenly become single, I'd be in AZ (brother) or Norcal(friends).
I stay because I work in one of the last jobs here that pays a nearly modest wage.

One advantage is the real estate is reasonable. It has to be, because no one is moving here.

Well I am in the Southwest suburbs of Chicago. Not the best place in the world, not the worst. I live in a nice neighborhood with amenities close. Downtown Chicago is about an hour from me. But I don't go there. I don't have any desire to go there. After working downtown for a year I got it all out of me. It's crowded, noisy, traffic sucks, parking sucks, everything's expensive. Not a fan.

Weather in Chicago is not ideal. Cold winters with a lot of snow. Summers are hit or miss. This year was very cool, mostly 60s-70s. Usually it's 90s. Whatever.

I want to live somewhere I can drive my vette almost year round. A change of seasons (ie, trees/leaves) is nice, but not too much snow.

We won't be going anywhere soon as the wife's family is all here. I could see myself retired on the beaches of the southern/middle east coast.

No Detroit... never entered my mind, either!

10 months? It's 12 months down here!

To be honest, when I lived in DE, it was about 11.5 months. If we had a snow of significance, then I would park it... but that's only once a year, at most.

North Jersey

Spring & Fall - Beautiful weather.
Summer - The Jersey Shore
Winter-Cold and damp

Traffic - Rarely get out of second gear.
Taxes - Highest in the Country.
Proximity to Yankee Stadium - Great

If my stubborn wife would agree I would be out of here in a day.

I've lived in Minnesota, Land of 10,000 Taxes, all my life. It's pretty here in the summer - many people who visit can't believe how green it is. I've always liked the change of seasons, but have grown increasingly tired of winter over the past few years. Fortunately the older I get, the faster winter goes by.

I just turned 19 so that has a big part in my opinion

I have lived in the rural country between farmland my entire life outside of Corpus Christi Tx.

I love the traffic here compared to say Austin tx but hate corpus in general. There just isnt enough to do and the car scene is small.

Im sure I would like it more if I was older and wanted peace and quiet but I like noise.

You'd like it here in the 'burbs then. You can listen to a dog choir all night long.

I've worked for a few school districts, and what I've learned is that no matter where they live, for most kids the grass is always greener on the other side. Better off starting out in a rural area and moving to the city though. I can't imagine a kid growing up in the city (where there's "never anything to do") adjusting to living in no-man's land.

true. is has gotten alot better since I got the vette and can drive the 10-30min to get near people.
I commute 25min to TAMUCC (college) 5 days a week and it gets to me.
There ar plus sides to living rural tho.
Personal drag strip, no cops, no nosy neighbors, hunting, no city ordinance(im out of city limits), and one of the best is loud loud loud parties arent frowned upon

We've got pretty high taxes here, too. A 200,000 house in my neighborhood would run you 4400-4500. Property taxes are cheaper in the City of Chicago, but the suburbs have much higher taxes. Go into cook county (Chicago) and the sales tax rate is 10.25%

My house is appraised at over $200,000 and my property taxes will be $740 next year. Income tax is very reasonable and sales tax is 7%.

Greetings Gurus:

I live mid eastern Missouri, where men are men an sheep are nervous. (Innsbrook,Mo) 65 Miles west of st louis 7miles south of
interstate 70. 73 miles east of columbia mo.

Pro's:
Housing...very resonalbe...especially right now,yet,
i understand obama's gonna fix all that.
actually this area is probably the best bang for the buck,
for housing.

Sports: baseball here is a religion, football, hockey.

Taxes. yeah, i pay em...not as high as most area's of the country, but the local officials are trying to remedy the situation.

Driving: Corvette weather, Mid March through December most of the time, even some in Jan. Nice winding roads in my area, (very rural) city...area's congested but not like
chicago, or cali.

Weather: i get cabin fever, i hate the winter time, i lived 7 years of my life, in south florida, Islamorada area of the florida keys, i'd move back tomorrow, but i have accumulated all this crap, and house and business
ect.... hoping to sell everything and move before i get to old to do so.

Cons: Weather jan feb and march sucks butt.. mild summer this year, but usually hotter than hell in august.

biggest turnoff for the area right now is unemployment and everyone holding onto their coin, and not spending anything cause they don't know what tomorrow will bring.
not me, i'm a grasshopper. i might croak tomorrow.

here are a few pics ...front yard...back yard around the crib.
