I'd love to see Martin win it. Nobody has mentioned Matt Kenseth. All through speedweeks this year and almost every year, he is quiet, flying under the radar. Then in the 500 he comes to the front. Wasn't good last year through speedweeks but was running 3rd on the last lap when the crash happened and took him out. I look for Casey Kahne to do well this race and this year. I also think Ryan Newman is going to have a comeback season.

Another one that's a sentimental favorite is Mark Martin. Mikey has won it twice, so I'd rather see someone else. Kenny Wallace would be ok too. He doesn't shut up now, can you imagine what he would be like if he won?

Once? DJ has won the Daytona 500 three times!
I can't imagine a race fan in the whole world who'd be disappointed if Martin could pull it off too. He's like Harry Gant was. Tough as nails, yet loved and respected by all. One of the true good guys who make this the greatest all-American sport.

Thanks guys. I also can't wait to get my smog pump eliminator pulley installed. I ordered it, should be here soon. That is the worst looking part of the engine bay now.

I'll give you the standard answer for the low coolant problem: Burp the coolant system. This is usually the problem.

since when did Williams Renault use a CVT in F1? The tech standard has been the barrel style quick change for the last 20 odd years.

American cars are #1 with me too but what's an American car anymore? How many parts on the big 3 domestic builders come from foreign sources? With the international nature of all of the major automakers, I just don't care anymore. There's a reason that Toyota is see-sawing with GM as the world's largest auto company and that's because they make great products that people want. But at least most of their vehicles that are sold here are also built here, providing hundreds of thousands of jobs both directly and through their out-sourcing. No amount of wishing will take us back to the good old days of American domination in this field so I just don't worry about it anymore. I've never been a fan of makes in racing anyway, only the drivers and teams. For instance, back in the 80s, my two favorite drivers were DW and Bill Elliott, Chevy and Ford drivers respectively. But even with all of this being said, I admit I was a little bummed when I heard that one of my two current favorites, Tony Stewart, would be in a Toyota this year. But now that I see how they're running, I've gotten over it real fast.
Go Tony, go Junior and there are quite a few others that if they won today would be great too. Lovable Mikey, Kenny Wallace (wouldn't that be cool?) DJ in his last 500, he's a hometown favorite here in Hickory and many others.
If your favorite driver can't win today, who would you like to see win?

I've driven both in a C4, it was even back-to-back, and I wasn't all that impressed with the TKO. The shifting didn't feel as smooth, and the ratios didn't feel right.

The ZF noise isn't an issue apparently with the dual mass flywheel. I agree that the clutch setup is stupid, but there's several options for push type clutches now. I'll consider one if the clutch is smoked. Otherwise, that money will wait for another day. I finally got some time to mess with it today, only got about 3 hours into the bastard so far pulling it out.

I'd like to try that but seeing as a PROM is a little harder to get a hold of I'll try to reseat it first. I also plan to check the IAC/TPS, check for vacuum leaks and maybe check the MAP sensor.

Bottom end is stock. I had BBL98 over yesterday. He said the motor sounded good.

I'm just not accustomed to these "higher performance" engine..

Modern Fuel Lines, Help Me Understand!

For some reason I am unable to comprehend the wide variety of fuel fittings and tubing connections available for fuel systems these days. I need either an education or for someone to just tell me what to get

I am converting a 68 w/502 to modern port injection. To that end I have the old 68 style tank with no return line provision, a BB Ramjet fuel rail, and a Mallory regulator with 3/8 NPT ports for the fuel rail and AN-8 for the fuel line and return line. Also a Kinsler pre-filter with 8-AN fittings. I also have a modern GM fuel pump module that has the push on plastic o-ring fittings and the fuel rail has yet another kind a threaded o-ring fitting.

To keep things simple, my plan is to forget the GM fuel pump module and go with an externally mounted pump and cut the fittings off the fuel rail and somehow convert them to 3/8 NPT as is on the Mallory regulator.

So here is my plan:

8-AN bulkhead fitting on tank

Short line to pre-filter with 8-AN fittings on each end

Short line out of pre-filter to in-line pump (with ? fitting)

Flex line out of pump (with ? fitting) to replaceable filter (with ? fitting)

Hard line out of filter (with ? fitting) to engine bay bulkhead fitting

Flex line to fuel regulator with 8-AN fitting

RETURN LINE
Flex line out of regulator with 8-AN fitting to bulkhead fitting

Hard line to rear of car.

Flex line to tank.

*also hard lines are 3/8 fuel line and 5/16 return AND I could use some advice on a good pump for this setup

All help here is appreciated. I admit, I'm baffled.

Now if it were a carburetor..............I would probably still be confused

I'm running open headers. Could just be some mechanical noise. This is the highest performance engine that I have personally built or turned a wrench on. When getting this intimate with a motor it's the noise is probably common, just not to me.

Thanks. I'm running out to pickup a distributor wrench, Haven't used mine in years and don't know where it is.

I also have to go get my timing light back from my uncle. Any suggestions on timing. I am at 6* BTDC now.

kentucky_vetter, I'll make sure and get there this summer and look you up. I used to keep my boat at Burnside, I know right where your at.

Last year is the first summer I didn't go down to the lake in over 20 years. Everyone said the lake was low and then I heard it was not that bad, but that was from the Conley Bottom dock trying to get me to rent a houseboat

brut, you've never been to Lake Cumberland? You don't know what your missing.

So I have everything set up and the motor running.

Problem is it's not running the way I want it to be running.

I suspect I may some timing/ignition issues.

Here's what's happening:

1. I have what I think is a knocking. Never heard one before. I'm running premium gas.

2. The #8 cyl header pipe is getting red hot

3.idle goes up and down. funny part is it did that before I did the work. it kinda hunts for idle. IAC is new.

4. There's a hesitation when I hit the throttle. It will kinda bog before it goes..

I'm getting no codes.

Thanks

Take it to a radiator shop and get it done right.

I have a pin hole in a cross fin on a race car that came from crash damage. It spit out a very small stream when hot. Since I still had to get out on the track, I covered it with JB Weld. It fixed the leak. And, it's been 5 years and it's still not leaking, amazing.

Again, take it to a shop.

JB Weld is the shit.

I had a bolt hole on the right head, at the very front, gaul out. I was beyond pissed... I tapped it clean and after a few tries with a helicoil, gave it the final hit. The hole was bottomed, and I didn't have a bottom tap. I cleared the hole one last time, took the helicoil and coated it in JB Weld. I then took a stud and coated it in JB Weld. I screwed the stud in as far as it would go. 24 hours later, it held a 25 ft-lb torquing.

Ask Jr Rifle Coach if it's still there.

two bolts are surprising strong. It takes a lot of power to overpower them.

Are you going well over 500hp??? then yes, otherwise, na... not worth it.

L98s are two bolt. Any good machine shop can do the 4 bolt mod.

Do you need to do it? Tell us what kind of horsepower you are planning on.

It's an after market all aluminum radiator that goes in my son's Camaro. It's a "Be Cool" or something like that. It's coming out tomorrow and then I'll find a shop, I hope.

I thought you were talking about your Vette, Tom. The BeCool is a good radiator, it should be no problem for a competent shop to make repairs to it.

No shops around the Charlotte area can or will fix the leak. I found a company that makes radiators. Silla, ever hear of them? They are "all aluminum" and have a lifetime warranty. It'd be my luck to buy one and they'd go out of business. How does $120 sound?

I've got a used L-98 block for free (still have to go and pick it up) and I
still haven't decided if I should use it for my motor build.

I have a few questions:
1. Are all L-98 blocks 2 bolt?
2. How hard is it to prepare block for 4-bolt splayed main caps?
4. Would it be better to find 4-bolt block?

if it will show correct rpms.

I would try to borrow another PROM
and see if that takes care of the
problem. Keep in mind it would
have to come from the same year car
with the same transmission type.

There is black ZR1 that resides somewhere near me. I saw it last summer while driving my LT4. We both had the targas out and gave a wave. I must say I felt dwarfed at that light. I haven't seen it since. It is an awesome piece of machinery.

I agree. I manage a restaurant where a large portion of our staff are highschoolers. It is absolutely incredible to me how many of them lack any social skills what-so-ever. Just getting them to keep their cell phone in their pocket long enough to do the simplest of tasks is one of the hardest of tasks. Much less getting them to understand the concept that their tips are based on quality of service and not a given right. The problem is that their parents take car of all their expenses, call in for them when they don't want to work. Don't get me wrong, it's not all of the kids. We have some really great ones that will go on to make a real difference on this planet. But most of them just come in, stand around and socialize, and expect to make money. The idea of the work ethic is gone. Why should they work? They ask Mom and Dad and they get whatever they want because Mom and Dad don't want to hurt their feelings. From the time I was 15, my parents fed me and gave me a place to sleep. Anything else was up to me. I paid for my first car, the repairs, my clothes, and alot of my school supplies. My bosses loved me!

The electrical problems could be
caused by a bad ground. These cars
are notorious for ground
problems. Check & clean the grounds
you may have to pull the cluster
and clean the connection. If this
doesn't work it may need re-
conditioning. The low coolant light
I have no idea, my '85 doesn't
have one.
The howl from the rear end COULD mean
it is in bad shape but check the fluid level
first. If the car was raced or just abused
then it may be time for a new ring
& pinion.

Good Morning Gurus!

Normally I do not start a chat on weekends, but I had a cool experience on my way to work this morning.

I was going to drive the Vette, but I start thinking about gas for 100 miles and I talked myself out of it.

So, I'm about to get on I-25 North at Hwy. 50 East. I see the intersection about 100 yards ahead. The light is red. Then I spy four distinctive oval shaped tail lights.

DAMN! I should have driven mine! Oh.... Wait a second. What's that? A high mounted brake light? NO WAY! A ZR1. Black, 1990.

Believe it or not, this is only the second time I've seen a Z in person. The first was in '90 parked outside of a medical office. So this was the first one I got to see in motion. Before today, I was kinda thinking the extra width in the rear detracted from the overall look of the car. I was wrong, of course. Wow!

I am a changed man!

What are the symptoms of Z Fever?

Well, I need to get some work done. I hope everyone is having a great weekend! Chat with you tomorrow!

We live in a "Me" world. Everybody
thinks nothing is important but them.
Respect?? Hell that's an obsolete thing.
Ignorance is running rampant in our
society. One trip to the mall will prove
what I say. There are a few exceptions but
they are far & few between. If you
don't see what I'm saying, then you are
one of "them".

Well, NASCAR has certainly come along way from those early Junior Johnson days. It is hard to believe that all started as a competition for moonshine drivers. I heard that Junior Johnson required that his car be equipped with a cigarette lighter.

My feelings about NASCAR is that is has become far too corporate. The whole "win on Sunday, sell on Monday" aspect of stock cars is all but gone. Really, you can't even tell the Chevy's from the Toyota's, they're all basically the same car. But it's still fun to watch and racing is racing.

BTW, when do you think they will change the name to the "Hendrick Cup"?

To me the Daytona 500 means spring is just around the corner. I can't wait.

Didn't take long for the Gibbs team to show that Toyota's can compete!

I'll be pulling for Junior though.

You must have read my mind...that was one of the first things I thought of....Spring in drawing near!

GO #88!!!!!

We no longer live in the "Leave it to Beaver" age, thats for sure. On one hand I think that we all deserve to do whatever it is we want(short of crime), but on the other I think that is getting us in trouble. I think there is becoming less and less of the HARD WORKING people and more of the generation that thinks everything should be given to them as a hand out. The future of our world is in the hands of our children.
