I know this has been discussed to death, but what the heck? I can't drive my car until it warms up, and I am interested, so here goes.

My plenum and runners look pretty crappy. Valve covers aren't good either, but the plenum and runners are more prominent, so that's where I'm going first. I figured I'd get a dremel and use it to grind/polish the plenum. Good idea?
Additionally, my oldest lost my dremel. So he gets to buy me a new one. Where is a good place to get one? Ebay?
Finally, I'm going to paint my oil pan, should I avoid painting the flanges, I don't think it matters, just being sure. I'm going to use black engine paint on it.
Oh, and finally, what gasket do you guys recommend?

Ok, that should do it for now.

76 falls was shut down last year due to all the bare breasted ladies. Other places on the lake are making a comeback though. Alot of people missed coming down last year due to bad advertising about the low lake level. Even at 40k acres there is still plenty of water to have fun on. If you or Brut come down for the show gimme a holler and ill put you in with our corvette club !

Find a 400 block and destroke it to a 377. I think it is basically a 350 crank in a 400 block. You will have to research rod lengths and deck heights and all, but you would be able to rev way past 7500 if that is what you want. I can't give much advice there because I haven't done it myself but have heard of it being done for high rpm circle track cars. Be careful, most engines that make good power that high tend to lose alot of streetable torque on the low rpm end. You will need really low gears to help make that up. Consider the ultimate use of the car, cam selection and valve train components will be of utmost importance in a pushrod engine revving that high.

If you run a 2 piece rear main seal block in your vette I think you need to buy some sort of adapter to use the stock trans, I'm not sure there either tho because that is something else I haven't done myself. Maybe a search will give you more info on that.

The problem I have with hard-core conservative politics is simple: it makes anyone who acts on behalf of the welfare of the people look communistic. This is the result of the GOPs victory in the war of words. I find it reprehensable.

God forbid you care about how the system tends to people. Now, I am not a proponent of the system giving at the drop of the hat (I seriously oppose the "stimulus" package), but there are times when the system can help those in need.

What's wrong with profit? Their margin is about 6%. Know what Micorsoft's margin is?

It's not a question of politics, it's a question of which economic principle you suscribe to.

If you were offered $10Million for C4 Guru I'd never say "look at him" or "that's too much" or anything like that. Hell, I hope you get $20MM.

See, I don't sit around and worry about other people's profit, because, and here's the bottom line, NO MATTER HOW MUCH OIL COMPANIES MAKE, IT HAS NO EFFECT ON MY LIFE.

Where did I say I don't want the government to take care of people? I'm for means testing all government handouts and allowing them only to be used for food, clothing, shelter. Hell, I'll give someone five years to get off or get out..

We all know the stories about people buying nice cuts of meat, cigarettes, ect... on food stamps. And here is a perfect example of where the system has gone wrong.

Replacing with a factory steering wheel, not aftermarket. Car does have telescoping wheel. When I put the wheel on the shaft and press in (to compress the spring), the shaft does not come through enough. I was getting temped to taking a socket and deadblow hammer to knock the wheel to start the "pressing" process, then get enough threads available to get the nut on to finish tightening the wheel onto the shaft.

JRrifle's right, replace them if they're leaking of 5 years. You could pull one and put it in a vice and find out it's still fairly hard to push in but, it will still be shot. A new shock will take all your weight to compress it, gas shocks will take even more.
Bouncing the fender only works on 55 Chevys
If the shocks don't look new, they probably aren't. The paint will start to fade in a coulpe of years and take a look at the mounting rubber. If it's cracked, they're old.

New shocks are inexpensive, and they'll put a big smile on your face.

Well, seems like I have all the bugs worked out as of this morning!!!! The issue with the bad idle and hot #8 header pipe was the same. #4 and #6 wires were in the wrong spot, and bad timing. (thinking I'll get different color wires for each cyl)....

So, I went and picked up my timing light that I loaned to my uncle. Fired it up this morning after switching the wires, and BOOM!!!!! FIRED!!!

I was able to set the base timing by disconnecting the ESC and nailed it up at exactly 6* BTDC.

I let it get to operating temp and raced it a few times. Problem is that it's wet out today. New motor, wet pavement, not a good combo.

But all seems to be running well and the only thing left is to fix a small valve cover leak on the passenger side. Perhaps the gasket didn't sit right.

Special thanks to ByebyeL98 for coming over and checking my work, helping me with the fuel line issue. Honorable mention to CFI-EFI for his phone support, as well as MSEVEN. And the countless others who have offered insights and advice. I appreciate it all.

Now, I have to go fix a valve cover leak once the engine cools off.

I'm still in planning phase. My first thought was to find 400 block and
build that, but it seems that finding one could be difficult task.
So, I can say that I'll go with 350 block for sure.

In a few sentences, here is what I want;
I want to build engine that will be rev happy (read 7500 redline).
It has to be N/A engine at first, but I'll go with all forged internals and
max 10.5:1 CR so maybe later I could add SC. I know that it's high CR
for boost but if I ever add SC it won't be more that 6PSI max boost.
I would like to get as much as possible out of that engine, so 383 stroker
seems good, but I'm not sure how much strokers like high rpms.
I know that there are a lot of factors to consider, but I'd like to set my
mind about what block and what CI to go with.

Please feel free to input all your thoughts and advices.

Changing main caps is a machine shop operation. At the very least the engine has to be line bored when the original main caps are replaced.

This is what is bothering me. There are only 2 machine shops in Croatia
are able to do line boring, and both have qestionable reputation.

Good Morning Gurus!

I'm having one of those busy mornings where work is TOTALLY cutting into my C4 Guru time!

So I've gotta run, but I'll check back later in the day. I hope everyone had a good weekend, and that you sickly folks out there are getting better.

I can't stop thinking about that ZR1 I saw on sunday...

Have a super groovy day!

Update:

Ron convinced me that for the $ I'm spending that I'm better off going to a casting better than stock. I went ahead and ordered up AFR's new Eliminator 195 castings for the LT4. You can make pretty good peak intake #'s with the stock casting, but there's not way you can ever make it flow on the exhaust like that. Which on a supercharged engine will be the choke point.

Resized Image

http://www.airflowresearch.com/195sbc_lt4.php

Next Ron will see if we can modify an LT1 intake or pick up a used LT4 or perhaps Edelbrocks new intake.

I'll also talked to Tony @ AFR and I'm going to have him make me a custom cam grind. Getting the cam grind for these aftermarket heads will be critical.

Dude, these things are gorgeous...Doesnt look like a CNC'ed head, they look like more of a balls out race head seriously. The exhaust ports look absolutely sick on this thing.

I only go there now to use the for sale section and to search for tech answers. I search here first, then there, then post a question here if I can't find the answers to the questions. By searching there, if I find the answers, they were usually posted by members that are here now. I don't post questions or answers or chat or anything there anymore.

Yeah, because without unions we'd have none of that today. Actually, I agree with that statement, however times have changed and they are no longer necessary.

I'd just go with the GM stock replacements which are .049" You'll have to do the math to be sure, but I can't see you going beyond a tenth or two of gain beyond the SCR of 10.4:1. In other words, you won't go beyond 10.6:1 at the most. .

Some math that is pretty close 5700/8=712.5cc per cylinder

712.5/10.4=68.5cc if take away 2cc from head milling you end up with 66.5cc

712.5/66.5=10.7 compression ratio...

10.7 should not be a problem, just use standard gasket

BTW GM head gasket 10168457 has a compressed thickness of .050 per the GM performance parts catalog..Pretty sure this is the OEM LT1 head gasket for aluminum heads

I check the F/S section daily and occasionally read through tech and general and generally just end up shaking my head. It's great to see threads like this though, existing long enough to make more aware of how things are there and to get more of them over here. This one's lasted surprisingly long over at the "train wreck" forum!

I'm still in the CF closet. I look occasionally but do not post. I saw that one though.

And it's for reasons such as this thread:

Like the proverbial train wreck, I'm both repelled and drawn to it at the same time.

I'm in the mood to start something. How about something on the me generation and how selfish and self fulfilling many Americans are today in comparison to past generations. And how the the equalizing of the America has taken the wind out of the sails of common courtesy. I deal with people all day long and I'm pretty much burned out. 29 months left till retirement. I've seen a steam of people for over 25 years so I can subjectively see that this old country just ain't what it used to be. Corporate America in general treat people as numbers and percentages for obtaining the bottom line. The quantity of life seems to be going up as the quality appears to be declining IMO. Anybody care to comment.

How about getting back to the original post. :thumbleft:

Sorry. I saw the phrase "me generation" and I thought about how the boomers are going to destroy this country because of their unwillingness to change this welfare we call SS, which I submit is unconstitutional.

Or perhaps you meant that people expect the taxpayer to provide all of life's benefits, like healthcare. How today's me me me society believes that it's anyone's responsibility to give them healthcare but their own. Either the company or the government. I mean we keep hearing about how Walmart is thrusting people onto state health care system when in fact it is the individual who chooses to have their expense picked up by the state.

However, if I diverged, I apologized. I read on and saw that you were lamenting the errosion of corporate America as a result of the unions. Yes, I agree. We see some pretty sinificant destruction to great American companies at the hands of the unions. Programs like Job Banks, health benefits for life, and outrageous wages for what amounts to unskilled workers.

How the responsibility for the company resides in it's obligation to develop value for the stock holders and not healthcare managment? How the taxpayer is once again on the hook for these pensions should the company go defunct. I happen to agree that the culture of greed has helped foster this sense of entitlement from a society which believes they are OWED by the companies, when in fact it is they who owe.

Or perhaps you were referring to the 1000s of people who are supporting socialists like Obama who promises (really) to pick up people's credit card debt if you get over your head, cover your mortgage, and provide free pre school. He's also going to pile in more money to New Orleans, because we know that nearly $300 BILLION, with a "B", spent that the solution is simply more money. I don't think that entire shithole was ever worth $300BILLION. (with a "B")

So allow me to apologize in advance is I may have skirted the issue about who the greedy and selfish are or the role of corporations. I'm new here.

Nitrous tends to blow out the spark from the cylinder pressure. I have always run .030 in my 87. I have been spraying it since 1995 with good results.

I'm over here as well, as far as trans stuff, I was trying to get a trans tech section over there for years. They wouldn't go for it.

It's amazing how many PM's I get over there still asking me to do stuff when I can't anymore.

I probably would have spent alot of time there. Sounds like it was a good idea. Suprised they never did it.

I've driven both in a C4, it was even back-to-back, and I wasn't all that impressed with the TKO. The shifting didn't feel as smooth, and the ratios didn't feel right.

Ratios on the TKO600 are essentially the same as the 4+3. Plus you don't have to swap out the 3.07 gears like you had to when you installed your ZF. You drove the car when the trans was brand new, it has smoothed up a bit.

I liked the Hurst shifter on your ZF better than the shifter on my TKO600, but once you get used to the CC5S TKO shifter it is pretty sweet. You can hit the gears pretty hard. I don't think the shifter feel difference is enough to choose one way or the other, all things being equal. Plus, I don't see the need for six gears with a torquey TPI.

The benefit to the TKOs are their strength. You will snap a u joint before you will hurt that trans.

Precisely

If you could test drive he TKO and then the ZF, you would buy the TKO.

The ZF noise isn't an issue apparently with the dual mass flywheel. I agree that the clutch setup is stupid, but there's several options for push type clutches now. I'll consider one if the clutch is smoked. Otherwise, that money will wait for another day. I finally got some time to mess with it today, only got about 3 hours into the bastard so far pulling it out.

Your impressions are what they are, but I wonder why dont they make the ZF for Vettes anymore?

Well I went to the ER last night and they gave me some antiboitics so I am feeling much better know. I think that is all I really needed in the first place but the first doc did not think so I am still congested but I can deal with that.

Hey red, If you don't have any blood pressure problems and are otherwise healthy, check with a pharmacist and get a box of Mucinex D. It has an expectorent and decongestant in it. Take 1 twice a day with lots of water and it should loosen up your chest and open up the sinuses so you can breath again. Good stuff. you have to sign for it at the Pharmacy counter because of the pseudoephedrine though. Good luck, hope ya feel better soon!
They gave me that stuff too but honestly I felt no differant after taking it for 2 days. I feel much better now though after taking 2 doses of the antibiotics.
