It has happened to me, too... the key, so to speak, is waiting out the 4 minutes.

The 1990-1996 system uses the CCM. It is looking for the chip rating. Once it gets that, it sends and ok to the ECM and fires some starter relay thing.

If you want to avoid a future problem, you can put a resistor on the circuit to emulate the key. Use a DVM to get the resistance.

it's not so much the locking or not, it is if the cap is vented or not... and your's should not be vented.

Mine hisses too, does it with both genuine and locking caps. The locking cap im using is the same locking cap that i used on my 87, i returned the original cap with the car and kept my locking cap.

I have a Painlessperformance VATS delete system that I bought from Summit (I think?) years ago and never used - I had it removed from my PROM instead. I think it's for all years. If you want to try it I'll send it for shipping cost...

Yeah, I'll try that tomorrow too. I know it gives you the percentage (that's why I started this lol), i'm pretty sure it shows voltage too so I'll make sure to pay attention to it this time.

You shouldnt need a helping hand to see that!! I can see if mine reaches WOT when i press the pedal to the floor, and that is from the right hand side of the car!!

Im sure you did this allready, but with the key to ON and the engine not running, Datamaster connected and running, you should be able to see what voltage and percentage youre getting then.

I had an 88 with a locking gas cap and when I would take it off you would hear the pressure release.

I bought another 88 that does not have the locking gas cap and I never hear the pressure release with it. I have read other threads that mention the pressure release. Could I have a bad gas cap?

Thanks for your responses.

I installed a Sirius receiver in mine last year. I was going to mount the antenna under the rear deck fiberglass but decided to keep it on top the halo. I ran the wires under the carpet and then under the side kick plate area, and then up behind the A-pillar cover where the receiver is mounted with the suction cup mount low and close to the dash. It is out of the way but visible and easily accessed.

I also used a Sirius adapter that hard wires the unit into my Bose radio antenna. similar to an RF converter but no radio waves to worry about and it sounds awesome. I'm not sure if XM has the same thing but they probably do. Is your unit part of a head unit or is it a separate receiver like mine?

Good Luck - You will love having satellite radio in your Vette.

So while we are on the topic, how bad are motor vehicle inspections in California? I was watching a TV show about "illegal street racing." In a couple of states (I am assuming california is one of them) you can't modify anything on your vehicle that suggests the vehicle could be used for street racing or you can face heavy fines. This includes things like lowering springs, low profile non OE tires, exhaust systems, air intakes. The police actually stop these vehicles and know what to look for and what tickets they can write. (Scary) I know alot of guys on here and CF are from cali. When you take the car for an inspection or get pulled over, do you really get hassled for this B.S. ???

Funny......

over there liked

I'm in the odd ball crowd, I like it.
Not sure if I would do something like that BUT
IF I bought that for 2K and worked in a custom body shop, why the hell not.
In all my years of looking at vettes that is one of the most unique ones I think I can say!

Sorry for the very late update, but the problem was the coil wires (inside). The wires has small cracks which was causing them to arc across each other. I found it when the car shut off while driving. Replaced the coil and the noise went away.

It's the inline 6.

We picked it up last January and it had just over 100k miles. I use it as my daily driver while my vette is having its new engine installed. We also use it often in the evenings and weekends while Bogus has needed the new heater core for his vette. The Jeepers currently has 115k miles.

I love it. It runs great and feels strong.

Just remove the trim pieces , speaker grills and slide it right out. You may have to remove the halo panels if you need to trim the new carpet in that area. Did my entire interior(twice, once in each car) in less than an hour.

Well, it happened today..Left a local forum cruise in and headed over to the local PD to file a report for an accident I had the prior day.

Ive seen other VATS threads over the years but never opened them as Ive never had an issue and avoid dealing with my weakspot, which is anything with wires under the dash.

Car wouldnt crank, nothing. Noticed ALL the lights in the DIC came on when key went to "on" position, dont recall seeing that ever.

ANyway Im understanding that for every time I turn the key and trying to start it the computer waits 4 minutes before allowing the starter to crank.

Wound up walking my sorry butt down the road, sat down and had lunch, came back and she fired right up. Got it back home parked it, shut it off and it restarted .

Weird...NOW. I did try the MacGuyver bit, did the door lock with my key to reset (guess I tried the ign too may times and the timer was still running), disconnected the battery, checked key pellet for dirt, even rubbed the key with a plastic bag to create static which Ive heard work (it didnt).

THis sounds intermittent which bothers me. I could go to MAM and buy a bypass but it would be nice to keep the system working.

The starter relay, CCM and what else is involved here?
Relying on you guys to educate me about the system and what VATS is tied to. Dont need a repeat of this.

my pleasure! These kinds of discussions are very valuable, because they help everyone who is in this debate.

All auto insurance is based, at some point, on a cars book value. Other states allow credit ratings to come into play, too. Get your son to bring his grades up! State Farm offers 25% discounts for good grades! My wife and I pay about $1500 a year for 2 cars, our rental ins, personal property (2 laptops and my Rolex) and my life insurance. All with State Farm.

My concern is with registration cost. My 92 is cheap here in CA the registration is based on the book value of the car. Mine is about 80.00 a year. But a new Vette can be $500.00+ a year!

well my son has taken a different path, he was offered (and accepted) a job with the company he interned with his senior yr in high school as a Network Administrator (at 19 yrs old), making over 30k/yr... so he can pay his own insurance....lol still have one at home though so it will be another few years with higher premiums.... and no she will not be driving the vette.....

If you start sinking a lot of money on upgrades/restoration in a C4, you should look into an agreed upon collector car insurance policy if you qualify and can live with the limitations.

With normal insurance you'll pay more in premiums and get screwed if you have a total loss.

I have my car insured with Sneed. You can get an online quote here:

http://sneedinsurance.com/sneed_collect.htm

the mileage limitation is not acceptable for me.... I drive the vette to work every day.... about 100 miles a day... don't plan on stopping anytime soon....

Hell, I'm a damn E5 for life I made 1st class petty officer 2 weeks before my Navy enlistment ended, I was allready on terminal leave so alot of good that did me.

Joined the Air National Guard as civil engineering. Spent 4 years getting everything ready, waiting on a Tech Sgt slot to open up and when it did, I was 1 week from transferring from CE to the military police squadron. The conversation went something like...

Msgt - I hope you got your uniform ready, you're getting promoted next drill weekend.

Me - thats nice. Heres my paperwork for you to release me to crosstrain to military police.

Msgt - blank stare....silence.

Me - can I still have my tech stripe?

Msgt - silence.

That was the end of that. Fast forward another year.

So now I have to start over again in this career field as an E5. Allready went to the school, recieved my 5 level, 1 month from my 7 level requirements and have completed the AF combat leadership course. In another month I'll have two 7 levels and 2 aas degrees.
I guess I shouldnt complain because the reason I cross-trained was two fold. I wanted to do something more than I was doing in CE. I'm not saying I'm all hooah and all but I wanted to do something besides sit on my ass.
The other reason was the security forces squadron is growing at our base and while room for advancement is thin, we're growing and I had the opportunity to get an AGR job, which I did. Now if I could just get a damn TDY and a tech stripe everything will be OK in my little world.

Sorry guys, I just needed to vent a bit.

I'm a SSGT for life here. (see other thread)
My brother in law however went from E6 to O1 in the Air Guard. He's now the commander of his communications flight as a captain. I dont think he's complaining
