There's no doubt you were steered in the right direction. I've got $1500 in my factory LT1 head castings and intake porting, the over-sized valves and related, etc. And I got a deal, IMO. It works well but still could have been better for not much more money overall, using after-market heads.

What brand of window seals did you buy? I'm going to replace these on my 89 in the next month or so also. Figured I would do that when the door panels are removed for front speaker/amp repair.

Joel

just be careful if you drill out the rivets holding the strip in if you go through it too far youll go through the door leaving you some holes to repair on the outer side of the door
that will ruin youre day be carefull :thumbright:

As copied and pasted from......

Heres why I pushed him to do it while were talking budget....

Originally we were going to do a cheapie S/C 350 and reuse everything we could just to see how cheap it could be done.
THe "what abouts" and common $ense derailed that thought..:

-3 angle V.J. $160
-CC chambers-Freebie
-Cut heads $50-100 depending on shop
-seals $20
-Springs, retainers, etc $150
-Possibility of guides -$170
-Full port/polish $1000, taking the heads to the limit.
-Flow heads on Superflow 600 $52

That right there is approx $1500, reason enough to start thinking aftermarket. Could you shortcut and make it run anyway, probably. Sure it still would have hauled butt, however once youve gone so far wouldnt take much to really step it up.

oops, add 240 for the cost of the heads and soda blasting.
Now....

That price is reusing stock valves and seats wiht 80k miles on them, then throwing some boost at it...Could be done, but....

For a mild N/A 350 didnt see the need for big valves.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
THen Brian got the stroker bug...somehow....
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Add in the cost of cutting for larger seats ($120-$180 depending on shop), and new valves ex: Manley stainless, $12-$15 each and its easy to sink almost 2k into a set of heads.Iin the end for the money they still dont come close to aftermarket $$/hp. At that point the choice was obvious.

Now, Imo for a mild 350 you could get away with a 3 angle, little less port work,(major improvement but not crazy#s), a shave, seals, springs and flow them for about $1200-$1300

So really, for the money vs/power he is still on track IMO. I bet his beast might tap the door of 700 or close to it when were done. (bastard!!)

Thanks...

Final color is 06 Vette white, interior coca cola red. Originally white on red (bucket seats), just updated the colors. I wanted black with blue pearl but noone would paint it black. Besides, Im not a diligent waxer and having something stealthy and low maintenance is more up my alley.

Ill apply permanenet undercoating via drag radials.

Before its asked....

358 cid
-Pump gas motor
-Scat 4340 crank
-0 deck, 4 bolt, studded mains
-Manley Sportmaster 6" rods/pistons, floating pins
-Dart Conquest (early pro1 head) ported/angle milled by Tony Mamo, tops right around 302cfm
-Team G with porting, angle milled
-Solid roller 250/254@ .050, 280/286 adv. .670/.660 on a 110 by Tony
-Crower sever Duty lifters
-Jesel 1.6 shaft rockers
-Dougs 1-3/4" headers

Should idle around 12-1300, shift about 72-7400

-1/2" Polished stainless line from pickup to carb (learned about how to polish on this project)
-1997 T56 trans
-Centerforce DF clutch, billet flywheel with 14 lbs removed
-4.11 rearend
-SSM lift bars, boxed uppers, Edelbrock control arm braces, crossbrace I made & welded in rear to stiffen rear section...
-Quick ratio steering, etc etc....

PS and PB only, no power windows or any of that nonsense.

It should sit an inch or two lower when done with 295/50/15 in back I hope.

I know somebody who had such a case, where the Vette couldn't be shut off.
It had to do with the aftermarket radio wiring, but don't ask me what exactly.
Was a MY90 btw.

First thing I'd look at is the ignition SWITCH (on the steering column).

(Your key cylinder actuates a ROD that runs down your column to your ignition switch)

Good Luck

I have a 1990 and lately have been having issues with my car and I'm sure many of you have seen a post or two by me the past few weeks. I finally got it down to thinking it was the ECM, replaced that and problems were still there, after tapping the ECM one day I thought the reman ECM was faulty so I was about to buy a new ECM and PROM to see if this would fix it. My girlfriend bought me new headlights for my birthday which was yesterday so after I install them I turn the car around and put it back into the garage. As I turn the car off the car will not shut off and the starter keeps trying to engage when I pull out the key, when I put it back in the car will start right up without having to turn it or anything. I try wiggling the key in the ignition to see if it will do anything but nothing happens and during this time the starter ends up killing my battery - car slowly dies down. I hooked it up to a charger and come out after work and nothing has happened - I have no lights when I put the key in, NOTHING. I am replacing the starter this weekend but what can I do to get some power to this car in the meantime?

I approve, other than the headlights, they're too Euro for a vette.

The rear visibility would probably be really bad on that thing and would get redesigned.

I am making a low profile penum for the 502 so I will be able to clear the BB hood. The black line in the side view is the underside of the hood.

GENE, go to see you. This might be a good place to get some LT1 help. Lot's of C4 guys around

Hey, nice color

As bogus said, the '96 Opti is much harder to "Kill" with water. I have washed my LT4 engine many times.

As he also said though, don't directly spray the hose right at the Opti. And I wouldn't use one of those high pressure wands either.

Stock Head Combustion Chamber= (58CC)

Most all calculators come out to about 9.23 or 9.25. I'm not sure of the stock head gasket bore diameter, but it only changes the final static compression ratio very little. I'm pretty sure you are thinking of an LT1 or LT4 engine. I'm not sure what their stock ratios are but I think they are in the 10.XX range. I don't know what the final CC of your heads are, but I know stock with 113 aluminum heads your compression ratio is around 9.25, but GM advertised it as 9.5:1. Below is the web address of a good calculator. On my engine build I used the stock bottom end, .012 shaved off of 113 heads, and a .024 gasket with a .060 bore diameter. Since I don't know the new CC of the heads I just use the 58 CC as stock, then subtract the .012 off of the deck height. That will give me the same result. My CR now is 10.15:1. Try it out and let us know what yours is.

http://members.cisdi.com/~anesthes/comp.html

I measured the stock head gasket, it was .050 The new gasket has a spec of .039

Hmmmm...I dunno. Looks like the only thing that is C3 is the front curves. Other than that, it looks like a regular ZO6. Not sure if I like it or not. The original looks pretty good as it is.

Laguna Seca has been a dream of mine for a long time. I will drive the corkscrew before I leave this earth.

Sucky as the midwest is, we have a pretty nice selection of world-class tracks within a reasonable drive. And there is a plethora of great ones that are a bit smaller and don't have the facilities to handle a televised event, but are still a blast to drive.

So Bill, I guess that's our deal...I'll meet you at Laguna someday for a ride in one of those little death traps you call Karts.

BTW cage is complete, lexan in the front, new roof weighs in at about 1.5 lbs. I'll get some pics up soon but there is still too much real work to do before Friday so it'll have to wait.

And there you have it. Follow the money.
In the 70s, it was global cooling, an ice age coming. But no money to be made off of that. So... bingo, global warming. With that, you can tax the people and attempt to do some weath redistribution.

The Arctic ice has recovered, and the coverage is as much as ever.
The sun's output seems to be on track to miss a peak in it's 11 year cycle.
I'm freezing my a$$ off in Ohio.
A group of Russian scientists are predicting and preparing for global cooling.

If we do get another small ice age, we'll WISH we had global warming. At least with warming, you can grow food.

Just picked up a set for my blower build
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/showthread.php?t=1862873

Ron convinced me that for the $ I'm spending that I'm better off going to a casting better than stock. I went ahead and ordered up AFR's new Eliminator 195 castings for the LT4. You can make pretty good peak intake #'s with the stock casting, but there's not way you can ever make it flow on the exhaust like that. Which on a supercharged engine will be the choke point.

Resized Image

http://www.airflowresearch.com/195sbc_lt4.php

Next Ron will see if we can modify an LT1 intake or pick up a used LT4 or perhaps Edelbrocks new intake.

I'll also talked to Tony @ AFR and I'm going to have him make me a custom cam grind. Getting the cam grind for these aftermarket heads will be critical.

Yes, noted.

Guys, I just got back from a different machine shop. Their pricing for getting 10 sets made............ 380 per set. Delivery time 4-6 weeks. If I go up to 50 sets, price goes down to the 90's per set.

Think Mrs Clinton has a chance? Looking more and more like its going to be McCain vs Obama every day. Although if it were a Clinton Whitehouse again, we might get relations going pretty quickly with Cuba......as I recall Bill Clinton likes his cigars! It would be nice to hop into the nearest humidor and get a genuine Cuban to enjoy.

B.C. budget creates a carbon tax
DIRK MEISSNER Canadian Press
February 19, 2008

Story Link

"The carbon tax , effective July 1, will be phased in over five years to
give consumers and businesses time to adjust to the new tax and
understand there is a cost associated with generating harmful greenhouse
gases, she said.

The carbon tax will start at a rate based on $10 per tonne of carbon
emissions and rise $5 a year to $30 per tonne by 2012, Ms. Taylor said.
The tax works out to an extra 2.4 cents on a litre of gasoline, rising to
7.24 cents per litre of gasoline by 2012."

I think we can all afford 20 for the entire season? Heck that hardly buys 7 gallons of gas.

I'll hold but best that we use MO rather than PP or other means.

In theory, there aren't impurities because only H and O join together. As

is what results from the Fuel Cell process.

Willow Springs is actually only about 3.5
ButtonWillow is about 4.5

But unless I leave at 3am in the morning, I have to drive in traffic all the way through Orange cty, LA, SFV to get up there.

I guess I shouldn't complain. I did California and Streets of Willow in December, Willow was a looooong day. I even skipped my last run group.

Yea, any same day drive back from the track is a bitch. Driving back from Laguna on a Sunday nite damn near kills me, 6 1/2 hrs.
All of my races are a min of 4 hour tows but fortunately I'm at the track for 3 days and only have to drive one leg per day.
ThunderHill and Sears Point are 4 , Laguna is 6 1/2, Buttonwillow, Vagas and Willow are 8 1/2. Portland is a real bitch at 12 1/2 so I've only done that 3 times.

I am lucky though, my test track, Reno-Fernley is 35 minutes.

I fall into the impatient class. I like to start a project and finish it in the same setting. Just don't ever turn me loose with a soldering iron!! I refuse to do soldering work as I will burn the hell out of every trace there is.

Guess I am out of the loop here...who holds the money? what happens if not everyone joins the wager?

I think Jrrifle coach- the commish should hold
if we decide to use the payout I described and not everyone participates
they all go down proportionaly.

What brand of window seals did you buy? I'm going to replace these on my 89 in the next month or so also. Figured I would do that when the door panels are removed for front speaker/amp repair.

Joel

I got them from Eckler's. There prices seemed about as cheap as anyone. I bought several items to install. I took my glove box apart to see why the lever wouldn't work. The cheap little spring was broken in half. I just overlapped it a little and put some black tape on it and it works fine now. I'll probably order one when I need more parts.

Cal Speedway is 2 hrs
Willow Springs is actually only about 3.5
ButtonWillow is about 4.5

But unless I leave at 3am in the morning, I have to drive in traffic all the way through Orange cty, LA, SFV to get up there.

I guess I shouldn't complain. I did California and Streets of Willow in December, Willow was a looooong day. I even skipped my last run group.

I'm not sure if that is cheating. If everything is within Specs then you shouldn't have to machine anything.

I Rep a precision Machining Company form back East and we always talk about Tolerances of .0001". That is One Tenth of a Thousandth of an Inch. What I am trying to say is, there is no way those Blocks and heads were machined anywhere near those tolerances when they were new. The Gasket is designed to make up those lose tolerances.

Then there is flatness specs......There is just no way the heads are held to any great spec.

That Gasket takes up all the slop, So I think.....and CFI will correct me [which I respect] I think there is more to Torque sequence and Foot Pounds than exact machining.

Yea, the MSD has a much better seal, o-ring. You'd have to really hose it to get water inside.
I stuff rags around the opti , push them between the opti and W/P. I don't turn the hose on the front of the motor much.
The perfect time to clean with the hose and degreasers is right before you put the new opti in.
Mine's clean with no leaks so I hardly ever use a hose anymore.

The MSD is at 13 months with no problems.

Yeah, I think some people would rather go to the dentist than to the race track. Of course, they'll sit there and waste your time telling you about how they WANT to.

But hey, I was kicking tires for at least a year before I finally dove in. I may wait until April for my next one, since it's the only track within 4 hours of here, pretty sad considering I'm in SoCal. Plus I want to do some easy miles to break in the new trans anyways.

You did Cal Speedway, right? How far is Willow Sprs. or Button Willow?

So you have a ramjet 502 bascially. That won't fit under a stock hood. it won't even fit under an L88 hood, I had to cut up and raise the center section to fit a ramjet 502 under there.

i'm going to start working on a cold air box/duct for a 502 ramjet and bullshark (who also has one in his 69) wants a box too if it works out. If it works on the 69, it should be easy to make it work on your 68 won't it?
